I was given a home audio setup (5.1) as partial payment for work done. Anyway, the only output my TV has for audio is digital, but the system we got has only the red/white analog inputs. Is there any kind of splitter or conversion box out there I could use to make this work? I am a lamen when it comes to this, I wouldn't even know what it would be called. Thanks in advance for the help!

Does it only have the RCA cables (the red & white plugs) or is there also a coaxial style plug and wire coming from the sound system?

So you've not got a dvd player or other device hooked up somewhere along the line?
Just TV -> Surround sound system?

A pic of the output on the TV would help.

If by "digital" you mean HDMI then you'll need one of these:

HDMI to RCA

The old red and white (RCA) aren't much good. The only way your going to be able to use the 5.1 is with either a hdmi or optical cord. Do you have 5 speakers and a subwoofer or did you just get a receiver? If you got a receiver and it only has RCA inputs it's either really old or really cheap.

Chances are, the stereo is able to output 5.1 from the head unit, like if you are playing a CD, or listening to the radio. I have seen several '5.1' systems that only allow two channel input.

That doesn't make much sense to me, 5.1 is just that 5.1 channels with the front, rear, center speakers and the subwoofer all working at the same time to give you surround sound. I heard a rumor a while ago that some CDs have 5.1 but I thought pretty much only DVDs and Blurays have 5.1, and then there is 7.1 which uses two extra speakers in the middle of the room on either side of the viewer but I don't understand why anyone would have a 7.1 setup as I haven't seen it supported by anything not even blurays.

5.1 is a loose term.

Dolby 5.1 is just a type of encoding, allowing 5 channels to be carried over a given type of cable, or broadcast across a head unit. Generic 5.1 could mean anything from an actual 5/6 speaker system, counting tweeters on a tower, or even simulated surround.

When you can't manufacture a legitimate product, you just redefine the definition so you can write it on the box.

LOL that sums it up right there, reminds of how loosely the term HD has been used for selling TVs. Most of that kind of thing is just to sound fancy so they can sell AV stuff to people who don't know better which is a shame because a true 5.1 system is hard to beat, I guess we should all start throwing the term "true" in front of everything. I know it's not ideal for everyone to have 5 speakers with a subwoofer and a receiver that weighs a ton but if you want actual surround sound it's the only way to do it IMO.

Kinda like 4G for cell phones.

AT&T was selling and advertising 4G service here for a least a year before they even upgraded their towers...

Ok my pics dont seem to want to leave my memory card ATM but I found something similar. My system is a lot like the one pictured, with the sub box acting as a receiver, but that box only has the two round red and white plugs for input. The only OUTPUT my TV has is exactly like the one in the pic labeled "Digital audio out". My question was "Do they make any kind of cheap adapter or conversion box I could use to make these two things work together?". Thanks again for all the help!

The digital audio out port in that picture looks like its optical, no you can't get any kind of adapter for optical to RCA sorry.

I agree, that looks like an optical audio out. However, a quick google search turns up several converters that may do what you want. IDK for sure as I've never tried them but they sure look promising...

I've never seen a converter like that nice find, a few of them are a bit pricey but others are as low as $25.

Why do you need an adapter? Can't you just use an optic cable? You said your TV has one... the head unit has one, what's the issue?

I believe he said his TV only has an optical OUT, and the stereo only has an optical OUT.

Two out's don't make an in. (...or is that two wrongs don't make a right? Hmm...)

Oh, my bad. I guess you're SOL then, unless you want to buy an optical adapter, which is not going to be even close to true 5.1.

Buy a better TV.

The system he was given only has RCA inputs. How high tech would it have been anyway??? At least with a converter he'll be able to use it...

It would be cheaper to buy a better system with optical input, than a new TV. It's a 55" Toshiba. Not top of the line, but sure as hell not cheap! I will buy the adapter and see how that works first.
