Welcome to the first GTM 1/2 Scale Fokker Triplane short kit build.
Glenn is happy to announce his Fokker series will be avalible in 1/2 scale short kits. Meaning, Plans, Ribs, Metal parts, Cowls, and some wood cut parts. He is starting with the Triplane first. There are 10 people seriously interested in the first batch of this build. I will be starting very soon and will be doing the lead build. Also in helping Glenn with figuring out some of the construction details and changes. Glenn will also be building one and Doug Peirce of Fla. along with me. These models will have some changes from his 1/4 and 1/3 scales. The wing spars will be box spars as the full scale, the ribs have been changed, We will have scale wire trailing edges. I have developed the addition of scale ball and cup for landing gear and strut fittings for Glenn and he is hoping to add these to his 1/3rd and 1/2 scale fokker kits. The center section of the triplane will not lift off as does his 1/4 and 1/3rd scales. The center wing will plug in so the center section of the model will be left in place. The wing struts connected to the longerons will be ball and cup as the struts on the landing gear. The fuselage will be built out of 1/2 inch dowels. All in all there are lots of cool scale fittings going into this project.
The goal is to have atleast 7 of these models at the Dayton Ohio Wright Patterson Museums WW-1 2014 event.
Here are a few pic's to get started. I am planning on doing the Anchor paint scheme. I have cleaned my shop, put a new surface on my 15x4 ft. table and are ready to get started! In the pic's you can see the ball and cup prototypes in 1/3 and 1/2 scale and the Spruce spar stock. Also one of the ribs. The plans are of the center wing which I will build first.
Keep in mind this will not be a marithon build The goal is July of 2014.
Always enjoy your input.

Outstanding Project, TK - Glenn has been a fantastic supporter of the Dawn Patrols over the years, but I think he may have outdone himself with this one!!

VERY much looking forward to watching this one over the next couple years!!

AND seeing the Fokker Scourge at Dayton in 2014!!

Best regards,

Lee McDuffee

I see that Glenn's featuring the Dr.1s on his website at the moment:

Hey Lee
Thanks, I am very excited to start. Yes I think Glenn posted the triplanes on his web as sort of a hint to the half scale triplane coming out. I can see 7, 1/2 scales flying in formation at the Dawn Patrol!!

Hi Del
Got a long road ahead of me before Dayton 2014. I'm sure this will be a fun and exciting build. Been thinking of this project for years. My first triplane I built was when I was 11 years old! That was 43 years ago, I still have it.

Hi John
The 1/2 scale D-8 is presently in storage. My goal with that airplane is to finish it in the scale detail it has so far. I will need to make a full metal dummy engine and guns, and cover and paint the lozenge fabric. I'm hoping it will rest in a museum some where. It's too over the top to fly. This triplane project will replace the flying of the D-8 project. I could see a D-8 in wood flying but not all steel like my D-8 for if you bang it it's all over, the wood planes can be repaired.
Good to hear from you John!

Yes the ball and cup joints will add alot of scale and funtional detail to Glenns Fokker series. I have been using this method for over 15 years on my Fokkers and they work great. Although in the past I made them in shop, now these are being proffessionally made in a machine shop. It's nice to take your landing gear off in seconds if need be! Also the hat type socket is for the wing N stut fittings on the D-6 and D-7.

Morning Tom,

What type of steel are you using for the cup and ball fittings. I was thinking maybe stressproof or drill rod??

Good morning to you also!
I'm not sure what my machinist used, I just told him they needed to be strong, which they are. You break these and you'll have a pile of wood on the ground.

Hi Craig
Thanks for the interest.
I have been watching your triplane build on Dels thread also. Very nice work. Glenn surely makes a great kit. I had scratch built a couple DR.-1's in the 80's in 1/4 scale, after Glenn came out with his kit many years ago I had him blow up the plans to 1/3rd for me. I never got around to building it. But now he asked me to do the lead on this group build and sparked my interest again on the triplane so here we go. I was planing on building his D-7 but will wait till this project is done.
Good luck with your Tripe

I have been thinking of attempting this myself, but if you plan on marketing them I won't need to.

A neat thing about this is with the ball end threaded into the struts, incidences would be easy to adjust.

The 1/2 scale GTM D6 that Glen made for Barry and I .....flies great! Barry and I took it to all the major events the last 2 years and we had a blast with it!

I really hope there is a large # of 1/2 scale @ the Dayton show 2014!!!!!

It was really cool being the first...but now I want to fly FORMATION!!! Can't wait to see this build!

Darn it! Now I have lost all focus on my current project.

This thread got me ramped up again on the 1/2 scale tripe.

BTW found a video of a 1/2 scale tripe from across the pond....a little motivation.

What's the point? As soon as he gets his 1/2 N11 done, they'll be building 3/4 scale models.

doc, already got my own design 1/3 scale N-11 plans enlarged to half scale!

Don - this is as big as it gets for me! But you may be right....!?!?

TK - looking forward seeing all of these big DR1's completed and flying. My friend Dale, from Arkansas is on board with your group - he has been pointing this direction for several years now and is pumped that Glen has stepped up and is putting out this short kit of the tripe. I know he is going to pay close attention to your build. Shoot, I'm pumped too....I have wanted to build a half scale for 25 years, but never pulled the trigger. My target date for my N-11 is also 2014 and the Dayton Dawn Patrol Rendezvous.

I would like to see as many half scale build threads here on RCU as possible. I know you don't want all of us cluttering up your thread and I intend to start my own thread later this year. I encourage anyone who is half way interested (pun intended) in half scale models to stay tuned in and maybe start one of their own. It's a big sky up there - plenty of room!

Hi Joe
I was wondering when you were going to jump in. Glenn has informed me in who will be building the 1/2 scales, I know your name was in the hat. Well welcome to the build. Should be fun. I will be gluing spar stock together thursday night.
Hope you join in soon.

It was just a matter of time and materials avalible. Glenn is doing us all a big favor investing his money into these products. Funny I always wanted to build a half scale N-11 myself! Good luck with your build.

Oh By the way Joe, That half scale video is really cool. I wish I knew what they were runing for power. Looks like a scale 52 inch prop! They must have a belt drive going on under that cowl.
And Art that is a great video of Omaka, Thanks.
