Status: offline 		I just measured my robostrut-equipped E-flight .25 sized retracts. 5 inches to the axle. From browsing through the online manual, it looks like I'm good to go in that regard. If they break from a terrible landing, I can upgrade to the 46 sized metal ones down the road, I suppose. Or the 54g retracts from Hobbyking that I am using on a heavier plane with great success....

Status: offline 		Which 6oz fuel tank are you using? would an 8 ounce fit in there? 6 oz would probably be enough for the Saito 56 for an 8 minute flight though.
I have a set of .25 e-flite retracts with robostruts that apparently are cut to the perfect length for this bird (5 inches according to the online manual).
The Saito .56 is 16mm longer than the .40. And almost 4 ounces heavier. I think I can make it work.

Status: offline 		I have a six ounce Dubro tank and the Saito .40 uses about half for a 8 minute flight. There should be room. I think you wont have much trouble fitting the engine. I needed about two ounces of lead so you will come out just right. be careful fitting the engine to the cowl as the cowl already has right thrust built in. I might upgrade to struts, but I am alittle worried about weight as I added the drop tanks and the servo for them. It flies well but I don't want to push my luck.

Saito 56 would be sweet.

A geared electric setup with the right prop can possibly create a better sounding Merlin than a glow engine, although again a bit of work for an outrunner designed model. Outrunners just don't have it for the warbird sound, such as a dead quiet P51. I converted a small P51 a while back and was really happy with the sound of a geared bl inrunner setup. Really makes the P51.

So, I seem to be having a problem with my retracts.  I put them on, plugged them into the y-harness, and plugged that into the gear slot on my spektrum 8ch receiver.  I then went into my DX8 and enabled the gear switch, powered it up, flipped the switch and got nothing.  I've been trying to trouble shoot it for the last couple of days to no end.  Suggestions?

Status: offline 		Just had a few more flights with the P-51. I forgot to bring my camera, but I will next time. I think the Sait .40 is a real good match for the model. It takes off well and performs just fine. Landing is easy, but it could be improved with oleo struts, so I might look into that mod. The drop tanks are a cool addition. I like how it came out and it will be an every day flyer for me.

Status: offline 		Mine has arrived, I have confirmed that my robostruts are the perfect length. The .25 size retracts are more narrow than the 46 size so I'll have to add some wood to the sides of the retract mounts. I bought these robostruts before I found much cheaper alternatives. Search for the OLEO thread.

Status: offline 		I started the build by cutting the motor box back 43mm from the front, keeping the right thrust intact. I cut a 1/4" piece of plywood and epoxied it in with triangle stock going back into the motorbox. After that dries, I will fiberglass over the air-cooling openings below the motorbox, and fuel-proof all the wood in front of the firewall.

Status: offline 		If anything, it appears to have UP thrust and no DOWN thrust at all. Did you add any? How does the cowling look regarding downthrust, c550?

Status: offline 		I only noticed right thrust in mine, but unless you want to redo the cowl you have to match the cowl to the spinner backplate. I used a bandsaw to cut off the electric motor stuff off of the backplate and it fits the saito just fine.

Status: offline 		I'll live with the unexpected and undesired upthrust.

The spinner offered some challenges. I had to hack-saw the collet-thingy flush off the backplate and drill out the bolt-hole in the spinner to allow use a dave brown adapter. I also had to grind down the bolt sit flush in the front of the spinner. I had to drill out the backplate center hole to fit a spacer that I had laying around from a dubro spinner. I hope the **** is balanced.

The color mis-match of the wing flarings and the hatch-cockpit have reared it's ugly head. A few people have mentioned it in other threads. Cannot see it in the posted photos but under my fluorescent lights it might have to be addressed. Not sure how yet...

Correction:
I have taken a palm sander and removed the upthrust on the new firewall. I also took the sander to the front of the cowl and added downthrust angle. It sanded through the lip on the bottom and most of the side. I will see how that works out later.

I had some Olive Drab flat lacquer and lightly sprayed the cowl, hatch, fuselage and inner parts of the wings and horizontal stabs, blending it a bit. This was after rubbing the entire surface with steel wool. First impression is wonderful.

 Here are some pictures of my brother's Eflite P51B.  It is modeled after a plane from the Tuskegee 332nd Fighter Group. It still needs some small items for completion.  The weather is to nasty to be flying anyway.  If I could find another kit locally, I'd buy it with the heavy discount.  Too bad it is being discontinued.

Status: offline 		Well I was fliying today and everything went well, except I lost a landing gear door. I have looked and they don't seem to sell just the gear doors. I don't know what I will do, I guess I might have to scratch a set. Other than that it still flys great!

Status: offline 		Just a quick update. Eflight ill not sll just the gear doors. I decided to look again and actually found the gar door. It landed bout a foot from a little crek near the field. I glued it back on with a lot of zap a dap goo. I have had a few outings with it sence and it is really flying well. I have the rop tanks set up and it is pretty cool to drop them and go into aerobatics. There is a dude at my club with the electric version, and I am hopeing to fly with him so I can get a direct comparison of how much beter the Saito equiped model is.

My brothers is about 95% done.  It only needs the exhaust aluminum welded and he's been too lazy to take it down to guy.   I will try to snap a few pictures of it and hopefully when he gets around to flying it, I'll be around to get it on film.
