Which engine would allow for the least amount of cowl cutting? I know a G45 with a prop extension only needs a couple of holes for the carb and spark plug wire. Is this the best choice available? (No electric motors please)

you need a rear mounted carb like on he DLEs and DAs I believe. The only holes required would be for the muffler. In the pic you will see 2 TFGS P51s, the B model has the G62 and side carb and muffler, the D moel has rear card and a Pitts style muffler soon to be mounted

DA50 or DLE55 with JTEC P-51 specific muffler. Only cowl openings required are for muffler exhaust tubes on the bottom and airflow for cooling.

The head or plug doesn't pop out on the DA?

You're right, the head and plug do stick out a bit. But it's pretty hard to cool engines in a P-51 with just the chin scoop opening. I think the only gas engine in the 50cc size that completely fits is the Revolution 52cc. I started out with that but read to many horror stories about overheating so I switched to the DA50. Here's a picture of mine to get an idea of how much the head/plug cap stick out.

Just a thought. If you wanted to go with the DA50, Sierra makes prop extensions (1 1/4 and 1 3/4) for the DA50. That might push the head far enough back to hide the head completely.

Will a DA60 fit in this plane without having to cut open the sides of the cowling? I know holes will be required in the bottom for the muffler and cylinder head.

Can't say for sure on the DA60. I can tell you that a DA50 with a JTEC P-51 specific muffler fits in the cowl without opening up the sides. The DA50 is 81.7 mm (3.22") wide. Couldn't find any mechanical dimensions for the DA60.

Okay found a mechanical for the DA60. Width is 3.147". Looks like it should fit. And JTEC has the specific P-51 muffler for the DA60. You should probably check the length as well to be sure.

If you want the most power, here is how a Husqvarna 4.4 ( 73cc ) fits. Homemade muffler.
