You are probably right when you say that Spektrum uses us a beta testers. I had several problems with my DX7 as it was one of the first ones that they made. After some planes and time they finally updated my software and I really have had no more problems. Horizon will not pay for damages but in all fairness they have been really nice. My guess the dx8 will be good shortly too, so dont ever get a first run of radio including the new futabas. Probably will be as good off to buy the $50 turnegy 2.4 9 channel good lucik and all of them are somewhat problematic. Remember that the sweet water draws the flys instead of vinegar, or something like that anyway.

I have tried both the Spektrum and the Futaba systems. Way to any brown outs and receiver blinking light's on the Spektrum systems. The Futaba haven't let me down yet. Always a solid green light and never has let me down.

I'd like to know why when you go to an IMAC contest or jet rally, the guys may be flying Futaba or JR/Spectrum and you never see a radio induced crash yet .40 / .60 planes are falling from the sky like rain.

What's the difference?

Mike

Tony yes i would think that everyone knows that or should. all Ant have a dead spot on them ( cone of death ) lol.

Luv2fly yes thats true and i think it comes down to installation. I could be wrong but i think most guys flying BND fly and most arfs are the newer flyers to the hobby 5 yrs and less and just install stuff and go. same thing has happened in the Maintence world of the big real airplanes. 15-20 years ago when i was in we had to know our planes inside and out and if something went wrong we knew exactly what caused it, how to fix and how to prevent it. the kids coming in the MX world have been playing video games all thier life and most have never even changed the oil in thier car yet they work on 320 million dollar airplanes. all they do now if something is broke is to keep changing parts till it gets fixed. Anyway back to the thread lol

F4u5 yes all i used to have was AIRTRONICS growing up. I saved for a whole year and bought a Futaba 6 channel. well i lost control on two planes and never used them again. I went and bought a VG600 or 6000 cant remember and had no problems. I have a brand new rd8000 now in the box with servos and all. I need to find someone that wants it.

Jp1961 satellite recievers doesnt add to the complexity of an install at all. well maybe an extra patch of foam and velcro.

Why in the world do Spectrum Systems still come with 4.8 volt battery packs when everyone knows they require 6 volt packs with lots of MAH's and in some cases High Output depending on the other installed equipment ... I Just don't under stand Spectrum's Marketing straggly. Seems they would have enough problems with the fact that DSM2 is flawed and they persist on making it retor to the 8's
Now don't get mad just because you refuse to see reality.it took XPS a lot longer to dump their first 2 implitations of 2.4

You may have your reasons for saying DSM2 is flawed but here is my experience with it..

DX6i - over 5000 flights in almost 2 years, Helicopter, BNF aircraft, PNP using the included 6200 RX and also others using cheap Hobbyking DSM 2 RXs,  - ZERO Problems EVER..
DX8 (prior to air ware update to DSMX) Over 1000 flights with BNF Aircraft, Helicopters, Micros, Blade Helis..  ZERO Issues EVER
JR11X (in DSM2 mode on BNF aircraft and Blade Helis)   over 500 flights.. ZERO Issues EVER...

I have been in RC for over 30 years and the 2.4 Ghz Radios (yes I have Futaba also) are the BEST I have ever used by far...

Just my experience.

Here are a couple of vids.. i range check every radio fully before using it..

in my opinion and from my own experience Futaba and Spektrum and JR are all equally reliable.. IE Perfectly reliable...

What sort of batteries are you using to power the RX?  is it via a BEC or ESC with BEC built in?

Look in the earlier post but to bring ya up to speed. In a 9 week period I witnessed and experianced 1 of 13 Spectrum 5,6, or 7' just loose all contact with tha receiver and crash the airplanes.   Like flying airplanes with spectrum radios or "RETRACTS" there those that have  or will have a gear up Experiance ... CRASH. It's inevitable because of the implimatation of the 2.4 Ghz Spectrum ... i.e. only 2 channels and no hopping ... if it was a good system they would have no need of the Spectrum 8. Now (In another Fourm on RCU) people are reporting problems using the old recievers with the new Radios. Apperantily backward compatibility wasn't such a good Idea.  Steve Jobs new that, else there would be a lot more Macintosh's around. Backward compatibility only stiffles the groth of a better system. You only have to look at Microsoft to understand ... but it does improve the bottom line.

Thanks, I hear ya..

Definately a case where the retracts might cause voltage drop and brown outs.. I can see that happening for sure if there is any binding or servo stalling and less than perfect batteries, but I operate aircraft with retracts with Spektrum with Zero issues, ( I am anal retentive to ensure I use good batteries and the retracts operate smoothly with no stalling.. )

As for backwards compatiblity.. its just a matter of knowing the real differences between DSMX and DSM2.. there is not a lot of information out there about it... Here is a video that I made to help identify...

If you do this then you will pick up incompatibilities with RXs and Satellites prior to using them in aircraft...  (

I am an Aussie but currently in Tucson Arizon and loving the Cactus... (This DX6i and helicopter travel all over the world with me and are perfectly reliable in every country..)

Cheers.

Maybe it's that there is a differant way of flying in the "OutBack" or maybe being upside down in the Universe, because you are located on the bottem side of the Earth.   Just a thought. Sorry Mate

I'd like to know why when you go to an IMAC contest or jet rally, the guys may be flying Futaba or JR/Spectrum and you never see a radio induced crash yet .40 / .60 planes are falling from the sky like rain.

What's the difference?

Mike

Read some of these ''reports'' carefully - the answer lies within
Basically it is the difference in the level of basic understanding of equipment used

Yes, that was my point, 99% of these failures are due to a "hack" install. The guys that know what they're doing are not having failures.

Negitive ... Maybe a few but not 99%. That would translate to the Majority of those flying Spectrum 5,6,&7's are "Hacks" and people flying Futaba JR or HiTec, Airtronics ect are not hacks?

That Futaba having a better link makes up for the install shortcomings of the new RC pilot. Add to that the advertising of the cheaper entry level spektrum units to the entry level pilots with BNF and it speaks for itself.

I'm already hearing DMSX user's state the unexplainable crashes have gone down, tells me that yes in fact DSM2 does have a link issue and it will not go away until everyone has upgraded to the X.

I had 100's of flights on turbine powered aircraft using DSM2 since 2008 without even a hiccup. What gives u the idea that Futaba has a better link? Because it hops frequencies? At least with Spektrum you have a device that can give you an idea of how good the link is. Futaba has no such capability unless you're running a powerbox and then you can check Futaba fades.

Some people are just luckyer than others I would guess. Some people will defend their "Old Technolegy" to the death. If DSM2 was better, then Spectrum would not gone to a Hopping scheem ...  Would They. Look Out ...

There is no DSM2 fiasco. This is just a load of BS. We have been flying DSM2 for years, in New York State, without issues. Brownouts are not crashing airplanes. If they happen at all they are one second events and usually the result of inadequate batteries, for the most part. JR/Spektrum products are just as reliable as Futaba, Hitec, Airtronics, etc..

DSMX is an advancement but it has not replaced DSM2. Since new equipment is DSMX, DSM2 will be phased out, but I do not see anyone rushing to replace DSM2.

LOL.....good one!

If Specktrum was so good, why do they keep re-inventing their 2.4 tech?
DSM, then DSM2, and now DSX....what's next HMS-Titanic2?

I had 100's of flights on turbine powered aircraft using DSM2 since 2008 without even a hiccup. What gives u the idea that Futaba has a better link? Because it hops frequencies? At least with Spektrum you have a device that can give you an idea of how good the link is. Futaba has no such capability unless you're running a powerbox and then you can check Futaba fades.

Some people are just luckyer than others I would guess. Some people will defend their ''Old Technolegy'' to the death. If DSM2 was better, then Spectrum would not gone to a Hopping scheem ...  Would They. Look Out ...
Boom, Bam, Crash ... Another Smok'en Spectrum Hole.  Sorry LOL

LOL.....good one!

If Specktrum was so good, why do they keep re-inventing their 2.4 tech?
DSM, then DSM2, and now DSX....what's next HMS-Titanic2?

After the DSM 2 Fiasco and a clever cover-up with a misleading 100 transmitter video,
I would stay clear of this brand!

Check this out:

There is no DSM2 fiasco. This is just a load of BS. We have been flying DSM2 for years, in New York State, without issues. Brownouts are not crashing airplanes. If they happen at all they are one second events and usually the result of inadequate batteries, for the most part. JR/Spektrum products are just as reliable as Futaba, Hitec, Airtronics, etc..

DSMX is an advancement but it has not replaced DSM2. Since new equipment is DSMX, DSM2 will be phased out, but I do not see anyone rushing to replace DSM2.
I would guess. Some people will defend their "Old Technolegy" to the death. If DSM2 was better, then Spectrum would not gone to a Hopping scheem ... YA THINK!

Did Apple come out with I-phone 4 because I-phone3 didn't work? Technology improves constantly, an argument could be made that Spektrum reacts to the market and implements new technology quicker than some of it's competitors. They're in business to get you to buy the newest, latest and greatest. That's how companies survive.

BTW, are you guys over 12yrs?

Mike
