I am getting ready to build a House of Balsa 1/12 P51 Mustang. It will have three channels (aileron, elevator and throttle), an OS .10, and I would like to cover it with aluminum Monokote. I understand that the top of the fuselage is plastic. Can you cover plastic with Monokote or does it have to be painted? Does anyone have any experience building and flying this airplane? I would greatly appreciate any hints or suggestions that you are willing to share. Thanks

I would do a very good range check with the Aluminum monokote. I recovered a plane in it and it was not friendly to Specktrum/JR 2.4 stuff. it might work well with a carbon ant reciever though.

Is this a new kit or old I dont remember them being plastic. i just bought a new kit from tower about 6 months ago i will check it to see. i would think on low heat you could get the monokote to stick to it then use high heat to secure to the wood.

I will plane on using a OS 18 in mine. 21,000 on a 7x6 sport prop.

I've done quite a few planes with metallic monokote and never noticed any radio issues.
What I have noticed is some of it is difficult to work with.
The shiny aluminum is a real pain. They have or had a drab / dull aluminum that was much easier to work with.
At any rate, you want to use the lowest heat possible to just barely activate the adhesive. You should patiently sneek up on just the right setting and then mark it.
I don't remember a plastic upper half on the HOB P-51.
It should fly nice with a .10 and either a 7x3 or a 6x4 prop.

I have a Herr P-51/Norvel 074 covered with chrome Monokote that has at least 100 flights, every one glitch-free. Futaba Fasst 2.4.

pig you dont fly 2.4.

i will try again but a horizon guy came on in another thread and said there was issues with ant buried in side the plane.

I just went and looked at my kit and it does have a plastic extension from the canopy that serves as the turtle deck. I will cut it off and make a balsa one.

I've got a Spektrum park flyer radio I use in some 1/2A projects. I don't remember if it has been used in a metallic plane.
RcGuy ....it's been many years since I used chrome. It's been so long that I don't remember exactly what to think of it in terms of how well it worked.

Thanks for the information guys. I will make sure to perform a thorough range check before I fly. Like you, I may discard the plastic canopy extension and make one of balsa which will be simpler to cover with Monokote

I heard many years ago that the chrome caused problems with 72mhz, but I've had no problems thus far and my antenni are internal. And I just remembered that the receiver is a HK Orange Fast 8ch. Cheap and, so far, bullet-proof.

Thats good rc guy. I had a Bp hobbies mustang. it was a 220 sq in plane. I had a Eflight power 25 with a 4 cell 3300 pack( 18 ounces alone). the plane was fast on a 10x10 APC. anyway the crappy ARF covering was coming off. So i covered it with the chrome. I went to fly as always with the the plane same reciever and all. i didnt even disconnect it when covering. Anyway it didnt work with the full range 6 channel specktrum 2.4 DSM2 reciever. I swapped with other recievers from park flyer to 7 channel ones same results. i switched to a JR 4 channel 72 mhz radio with the ant outside the plane and flew just fine.

maybe the DSMX stuff is better with it. I will try again some day.

I had one of these and had a blast with it. I put a magnum .15 in it. This was in like 94'-95'. I would just paint the fuselage. Light fiberglass it with polycrylic and then get some silver dope. Use the plastic on the wings. Monokote will not last too long on that fuselage.

This is the plane that got me into scale RC combat. The FW 190 was even more fun!

There is no metal in MonoKote, not in the Aluminum, Chrome, or Metallic varieties. Radio problems would be caused by something else, but not the MonoKote, which is fully-transparent to radio waves.

BAX I will have to disagree with you. If you want i can do some research here in RCU and bring up the threads on it. In the old days there wasnt any problems because we had the ANT's outside the plane. i know a lot of planes today are covered with flit-metal and have no issues also but the chrome monokote has something in the covering that degrades the recievers reception. I will do a quick test tonight since i have a small piece of chrome left over.

bax what is in the Chrome monokote that makes it so shiny/reflective? I will do some research for everyone.

I can make a ton of arguments why you should not waste your time with monokote, regardless of radio interference. The stuff is junk when it comes to lasting and looking good over time. Especially with glow.

vertical all i have used since 1978 is TF monokote lol it has lasted for a long time in the past. I have some new rolls now and will see. it used to be the best film covering. I have also used the ultra cote and that stuff works very well and goes on easier than monokote. but both have lasted a long time on most of my planes so far.

What has been the problem with it? does the clear peel off or fades?

BAX i wasnt disagreeing on if it had metal but that it has effected/affected many people with radio issues. I was just cautioning the guy to do a very good radio check.

I just did a quick test of some old chrome had laying around. i tested on a AR6200. The reciever was wraped in foamhooked up with a servo. It was mounted in a small 3"x3"x3" balsa box covered in the chrome. the transmiter is a 9303 2.4 converted to DSMX. the reciever is a DSM2 type. i didnt get any glitches at all. i will later try on a 7000 so i record all info from it to see if any drop outs or anything.

i dont know why i had problems installed in my last chrome plane but i did. I tried three different 2.4 recievers and still the same results.

Yes you can monokote the plastic. I have done it several times, make sure the platic is clean, set the iron temp to activate the adhesive but not affect the plastic, take your time and have at it. Do not use the heat gun on the monokote covered plastic as the high heat setting will distort the plastic (remember the plastic was heat molded). Built several of these HOB models back before mini and micro servos and they all flew fine. I remember one HOB P-51 I saw where the owner had installed wing drop tanks with wheels built into them for a landing gear. Looked good in flight.

Of course many people are happy with the stuff otherwise it would still not sell. My primary problems are that it develops wrinkles over time, and eventually will not shrink down anymore. The big one though is fuel creep, leading to the eventual oil soak and covering coming loose. I just prefer a painted finish.
Of course this is personal opinion, but I have found the smaller the plane, the worse this is as the entire airframe is effected by the fuel.

I too have been building models since the early 80's, and the last plane a finished had monokote on it. A Kadet senior I wanted transparent on the wings. The fuselage was doped though. I have a lot of old airplanes as well and the monokote looks like crap. I do fly my planes a lot though.

One thing that is cool about these planes, the plans have another one on the back side. They are so easy to build, you can scratch build one from the plans. HOB sells the plastic turtle decks as well. I still have an ME 109 in the box.

When i get aroud to my mustang i will make it in to the Galloping Ghost. it will have retracts along with the OS .18 rear exhaust turbo plug engine. 21-22,000 on a APC 7x6 sport prop and around 25,000 on the pylon prop. i think i should be able to get 130-135 out of it..

yes I do but its not cheap.
1. the engine:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHLV9&P=0

2. parts you need for it:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJPZ5&P=Z $ 9.00
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXXD36&P=Z $ 41.00

then a remote needle of your choice.

you will have to machine the head down to something normal and grind off the crank pin for the pull start.

use really small thin props or make a custom prop nut very easy to do.

One solution to the plastic top is to paint it on the inside and then use canopy glue to attach it to the fuse. Then cover the fuse and overlap the glue joint with the covering per pkoury's method. Less chance for of melting the plastic.

yes but bone stock its over 21,000 on a sport APC 7x6 prop and over 25,000 on the 6.5x6 pylon prop. good for over 130 on most small planes

I know of a $29.99 engine that can get you 130 mph.

I like the idea of the OS.18, but there's no way I'd cough up $40 for that carburetor. Just run a venturi with a remote needle valve .....and a home made fuel line pinch to shut it off.

With the .18 I'd want to see a potential greater then 150 mph before spending that much money.
