How about a stadium truck like the HPI Firestorm.

I found this 1/10th scale buggy for you on Tower Hobbies - about $205 RTR, and all you need are the AA batteries for the controller. You can use the extra $95 for hop-ups, CA glue, tools, and other stuff to get you started.

I can't find anything brushless for less than $300, especially if you are just starting out with nothing. You can always take the extra $95 towards a BL system.

For $325, you can get the same car w/ a BL system -

If you can find a better price for the same car at another web site, then get it from the place with the best price. Tower Hobbies isn't the most expensive place, but they're not the cheapest either.

$300 for BL RTR is kinda stretching it
definitely no 1/8th seeing a decent BL system alone is well over $200 to make them move

You can do 1/10th for near that if you go the kit route.

How about a RTR Associated RC10B4 for $40 more than the brushed bandit? Only thing is you will need some batteries, prefebely some well maintained LiPo's and a LiPo charger.

The OFNA LX-1 buggy is your best bet for a cheap reliable 1/8th buggy.

But If I was wanting the best bang for the buck I'll go with a 1/10 B4.1 Ready to Run buggy.

I'd definitely go with any of the Associated RTR brushless options (b4.1 t4.1 or SC10 RS). They'll all end up at or below $300. The big thing to consider is what are you going to be doing with it. If you're thinking of racing, find out what classes are at your local track. I'd highly recommend the SC10RS because almost every track races SCT's, not all race buggies or ST.
