Hi,
Help required in choice of propellers, for APACHE 50 inch with Zenoah BONZI stage 1 tune, driving WD200 steerable( trimax type ) twin drives, through a 1to1 splitter gearbox.Know it would be simpler to run single prop but already have the gear box,and have no intentions of binning it !! Therefore any help in this direction would be very helpful, and maybe save me a fortune buying propellers.
Many thanks,
Bill Watson.

Write a line to Chris at Dasbota Propellers (Dasbota.com, I think) he will be more than happy to help you with your set up. Good luck!

I have a 50" BONZI with a BZX4 mod , Chris from Dasboata recommended an ABC 2714/3 prop and I saw improved performance over the 7016/2 prop it came with.

Hes running twin props from one motor through a gearbox so i think those props are way too big.

Hi Bill,

Sorry for the delay in replying to your PM - figure it best to reply in this thread where others can weigh in on my opinion or possibly benefit from it too.

Hopefully your using 3/16" flex cables from your box as 1/4" cables will be larger than you need (for power etc), will have more drag than smaller cables, and will likely not fit the props you will probably be needing. Since your using the WD200's I dare say your using 1/4" unfortunately. I see 2 options - see if you can use step down cables that allow the use of props with a 3/16" hub, or a lot more prop work on a 1/4" hubed prop.

If you are using 3/16" hubs then do as below only using 55mm props which should be near the size your after I believe.

If you were using no box then indeed a 70 or 75mm prop would be great with a single drive. But splitting the drive means halving the power to each prop (plus a little more power loss for the drag through the gearbox etc).

I guess the best first question is "How good are you at modifying props?". If your good then we are in business - if not then you better start reading up on the art! (theres some useful info here - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3120686/tm.htm)

As others have mentioned - Chris (Dasboata) is phenomenal when it comes to props, service, and knowledge. But being in the UK it is a little more challenging to ship props back and forth.

Thing is - There are these wonderful little things called Tuning props (Carbon props) that are very inexpensive (around $5 a piece), soft, and perfect for this application. You will likely have to buy bigger than needed in order to find something to fit your propshafts - not a big deal as you will probably end up doing the same when you go with Stainless or Berillium props later on. These little wonders are very easy to work - you can cut them down with nail clippers or similar and clean up with a little sand paper lake side. They really do not need to be balanced - what they will do is get you up and running with a rough idea of how your metal props should be (diameter and blade size). I would buy 2 pair of them in case one breaks etc - they are reasonably fragile but should have no problem with the power your working with. Go with a 70mm 2 blade or 65mm if available (believe 70mm is where 1/4" hubs start though). Be sure you modify each blade to be the same as the other between runs. I believe MHZ Germany has them though other sources more local to you may also have them.

I would then (or if you cannot locate tuning props) locate something like the propshop CRC/6017/2/LH/BR and CRC/6017/2/RH/BR (http://www.prop-shop.co.uk/index.php?section=store&sub_section=product_detail&id=221&product_type=25) which I believe is the smallest prop they offer with a 1/4" hub and be prepared to remove (with a file) some blade area from each prop until you start seeing the performance you want (keep in mind it is better to keep a little load on the setup than to remove too much blade). This may take a runs to get up and running and I dare say that at the stock 60mm diameter they will not work.
Remove a little blade area from each prop (equally), do a rough balance, and then run the boat. If it is still overloaded then repeat (remove a little blade area, rough balance, run, repeat).

You might need to also reduce the blade diameter - I would think you might need to be in the 53-55mm range personally (no science- just a hunch).

Please give us some feedback on how you go and what you ultimately end up with as a finished size - also share some pics with us - sounds a cool build!!

Certainly let us know if you have any questions and keep us in the loop!!
