the Kv rating for a brushless motor is the rating for "RPM per volt".  It's an obscure value used to determine how fast a motor will spin given a particular voltage input.

Here's an example:
a motor is rated at, let's say, 2000 Kv, and you have a 3S 11.1V battery.  That means at full power the motor will spin at 22,200 rpm.  The motor controller automatically increases power to the motor to get it to spin at the appropriate speed for any given voltage input.

What this means in the real world is that a higher Kv motor will spin faster, but also use more power.  Whereas a lower Kv motor will run longer on a charge, but won't move the car as fast.  One way to get around this is to use a lower Kv motor with a higher voltage battery.  That way you get higher speeds and lower power draws.

Hope this helps a little.

The lower the # the slower. Kv=1000 rpm/volt. A 2200 on 3s (11.1 volts) will spin at 24,420 rpm. A 3800 will spin at 42,280. And so on and so forth. 2s lipo is 7.4 volts so you times that by the kv and will give u the rpms the motor eil spin. All depends on the vehicle what to go w/ 4x4 you want to stay lower kv.more torque the lower you stay. More top speed the higher.

higher kv motors will givr you more rpm, but they will also run at a higher tempature compared to a lower kv motor. also the higher kv motor will have less toque than a lower kv motor. Its all about finding that balance between rpm, toque, and tempature.

I believe that Castle Creation's website also has a chart that shows recommended KV motors for different applications (TC, 4x4, etc) to give you a ballpark idea of what's a good range to look for or not for your vehicle. For example, a 7700kV in a big heavy 4x4 offroader - not a good idea. A 2000kV in an onroad lightweight touring car - maybe not a good fit either.
