Status: offline 		I am concidering the purchase of a new pickup. I want to stay with the US brands and am wondering as to the ACTUAL milage. Most of the adverts state 22 mpg hwy. Is this anywhere near true? I ahve a 04 Tundra that gets17 HWY with the 10% ethanol blend FWIW and about 15 city. How different are the current V6 numbers for Dodge, Ford, or Chevy?

Status: offline 		After 9 1/2 years and 200,000 miles with a plug change the only engine work done on my '02 Dodge Ram with the 4.7L v8, I recently sold it and bought a new one with the 4.7. I used it around town all day making calls then took about a 200 mile trip. While perusing the mileage stats I found I was getting an average of 23.3MPG. No 6c for me. I love the Daimler designed 4.7l.  I did notice that when I'm doing 70MPH it only running 1600 RPM where on the older Dodge It would run 2000 RPM@70MPH. I think the new one has a six speed trnsmission rahter than a five speed which could account for the better mileage..

Status: offline 		Just got a new Ford F-150 FX-4 quad cab FWD with the 3.5 liter EcoBoost. It runs great but the mileage is not quite as good as Ford says. They claim 15 city and 21 highway, I am getting about 12 city and 19 to 20 highway. The highway mileage is close but with all of the stop and go traffic around here I'm lucky to get 12 mpg in town.

Status: offline 		Buy old is my advice. Get one with an I6 and a manual transmission. My '85 F150 gets 17MPG on average, 15 city 20 highway, thanks to the overdrive four-speed manual in it, if it had an automatic I'd only get 12-15MPG average. The I6 also contributes, even with the manual a 302 would get about 2MPG less than the I6 does. It's age isn't helping though, 100,000 miles ago I actually averaged 19 with it.


If you want better than that but insist on a truck, look into a Ranger or S10. The 4-cyl models get 25MPG on average even with a slush-o-matic, the manuals able to do up to 30MPG, and they're just as good as their larger brethren as far as reliability goes.

Status: offline 		My 2010 Ram Hemi 2WD auto. Gets 13.5 around town and 18-19 on the hwy. I am harder on one than the average driver though. It could 20mpg on the hwy at the speed limit. I run 75+ most of the time, but mostly it stays in town. It would get in the 14's if my wife was driving it. I use the remote start a lot also. In the winter time it really hurts your MPG to let it run 5-10 minutes before you get in it.

Haha, I kind of don't have a choice. Mine has no power until it builds a bit of heat, barely enough to keep itself turning if there's snow on the hood.

The mileage numbers are going to vary considerably as there are so many options that affect mileage. 4WD, 2WD, tires, capacity, driving style, etc etc etc.

FWIW, my '07 2500 Silverado Crew 4X4 w/6.0L gets 12~14 mpg. I don't do a lot of highway, but when I do/did, it can average 16 if the traffic is flowing nicely. My friend's '99 1500 Silverado 2WD w/4.8L and 5spd stick gets 25mpg highway.

Our '11 Subaru Outback wagon gets up to 32mpg and I can fit my 88" Pica Spitifre in there no problem, with tons of room for gear and more planes.


If you're concerned about mileage, don't buy a pickup.

Actually it's up to the each manufacturer to determine the estimated mileage for each of their vehicles and that is what is on the window sticker. The EPA makes recomendations to the manufacturers regarding the overall mileage for the entire lineup IAW the CAFE laws.

Status: offline 		Haha. The fact that it revs to about 3500RPM, has a tiny carb, and spends it's days below 55MPH contributes greatly.



Gotta love those old flatties though. Just can't kill 'em, one of the ten best engines ever put on public highways IMO. Toss a modern 5-speed in that thing some day.
