Status: offline 		I've built several of the Pheatons, both the 40 size and the large one. The last large one is the one I've had the most fun with as I did some extensive mods, much larger rudder with some area ahead of the hinge line similar to the J3 Cub"s, beefed up landing gear, firewall set back and a Quadra 72cc gasoline engine for power. A real ball to fly yet it will still slow down for a nice slow landing. On all of them (as well as a dozen or so other biplanes, I found the secret to nice flying is to make sure the upper wing is at about 1.5 degrees less angle of attack than the lower wing. All of them liked about 3 degrees right thrust and 3 to 5 degrees down thrust in the engine. The relative angle of the two wings was the most critical for nice handling at all flight speeds.

Status: offline 		I agree on the wing incidence details but, the lower wing saddle needs to be in the design reference to the stab. The Phaeton 90 will float in a headwind and really slow down for landing which makes it a nice bird to be a first "Big Bird" model. Some people recommend adding ailerons to the upper wing but, unless you build more stiffness into the wings as well, you are probably going to be happy with just the lower wing control surfaces.

Status: offline 		Here is a mod I added to my Phaeton 90 to use the stock muffler and still keep the fuel off the sides of the plane. I put a channel in the bottom of the firewall and fuse bottom to accomodate the muffler.  The engine is an old style ASP 108A off ebay for $68, new in the box.

Status: offline 		Thanks to everyone who replied to this forum on the Phaeton 90, its a shame Balsa USA don`t mention  anything on the plans or instructions  about incidence, this is my first Bi plane build so I hope it flys well!!!!. Will post more pics when covered, am waiting for my Monocote to arrive from Tower Hobbies. Has  a long way to travel to Australia!!! (hope it arrives soon!)

Status: offline 		BUSA does comment somewhere about the incidence issue. They actually recommend negative in the lower wing... but most owners choose not to do that after a build because doing so would require shimming the front of the wing in the saddle and I think the wing pegs are quite close to the bottom of the fuselage. It is simply easier to put the negative in the top wing by shims at the aft strut mounts.

As others have pointed out... if in the process of building, the best course would be to adjust the stab a bit positive, which has the effect of moving the wings negative to the stab.

Here are two photos of my Phaeton incidence checks during final finishing and adjusting “N” struts for soldering. The meter was on zero but may look to be off since I took the picture from an angle.   I check the upper and lower wing at the root and tips to be sure incidence is correct and that the wings aren’t warped. I set the stab at zero by putting te plane on blocks and measured the other surfaces in relation to the stab, since I did not make any adjustments to stab incidence during construction.

Status: offline 		I'm in the middle of building the 90 size. Glad I checked the forums.  So far things are going very well. Getting ready to mount the engine. I have an O.S. 1.08 and I'm looking for a pitts muffler so I can mount the engine sideways. In the mean time, I'm getting ready to build the n- brackets for the wings. Looking for suggestions for a color scheme. Any pictures out there? The blue and yellow made me think of the PT-19 I flew as a kid. Might work with the snoopy I'm using for a pilot.

If you set both wings and the stab at zero then be prepared with some shims to prop the upper wing up in the back. About 3/16 ought to be close.

Status: offline 		Looks good but it is a shame to have to cover them and hide the bones. I added the ailerons to both top and bottom and got a much better roll rate out of the plane. As I recall the incidence was shown on the plans?? That was a long time ago so I'm probably wrong?

I didn't say a thing but my first motorcycle only had a 50cc engine. Looks like the power band is just about right though!! I love it, really over the top!

Status: offline 		I think the engine and muffler weighed 7 1/2 pounds. I just moved the firewall back a bit and made new landing gear using 1/4 inch music wire. Balanced out well and flys great, still lands at a very low speed. It is currently on the wall as I let a friend fly it and he landed about 4 inches below the runway and the engine and firewall continued on down the runway. Very little damage other than a ripped out firewall.

Status: offline 		My old Phaeton 90 with a Super Tigre 90 in the nose. I had the equivelant of about two concrete blocks up front to get it to balance with that small engine, but it pulled the plane around and boy could that bipe fly slow. Never had any other bipe that could fly so slow on landings. A real floater indeed and real relaxing to fly. I gave it away to another club member to enjoy, but kinda miss it.
