I was searching for a Kubelwagen and I ran accross this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/320860240667?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

What do you think the Bandai Stug is worth? If I bought it I would probably build it an keep it. But I have no idea what a reasonable offer should be for the lot.

There is a tendency on ebay for people to bid up prices beyond what is reasonable, in my opinion. Actually I hate auctions, but that is another issue.

Thanks for any help.

Hey Russ,
All I can say is that it will cost more now that you have pointed the sale out to everyone on a RC tank forum.

Seriously though, the Bandai kits have nice detail but I seriously don't see the allure. They are a hassel to convert to full RC and they are in an off scale. Might be a fun kit to build but the bidding price is already more than I would want to spend for what you get.

It's not a bad kit, just not up to par compared to making it RC'd and up against Tamiya quality, a lot of work will be needed. I've spoken with a few tankers who have and brought to my attention what to look out for. I think if you were wanting a StuG IV, get the AsiaTam kit and either use the Tamiya PIV or HL.

As it just being a model, go for it! The Bandai kits platform is workable, just not practical and I wouldn't pay more than $180.00 for that kit alone. I know, I have one.

I was wanting to RC my Bandai Tiger I that I just finished up building ... just to have to run around with. The supplied plastic geared gearbox sounded like it was wanting to destroy itself and it has no provision for gun or turret movement. I thought it would be a waste of electronics to do so, so now I just a very large 1/15 scale Tiger I sitting around.

You folks realize you are discussing a model that was first released in the 1970s right? Bandai's 1/15 tank lineup preceded
Tamiya's entry into the 1/16 scale by some years. I believe the first of Bandai's models in the lineup was the PzKw IV with the
last being the Tiger I. For a while the PzKw IV was sold under the Extex label here in the US. The Bandai models were once
the only show in town in the 1/15- 1/16 range save for the Imai.

I have the StuG IV and Tiger I rc ready with Kenny Kong's track. The Tiger is full function with Tamiya's electronics and has actually seen combat on a limited basis. If you are into thrashing then they won't make it. Driven in a reasonable tank-like manner their
comparative fragility might give you some sense of what it was like to operate the real thing.

Detail wise they can't hold a candle to even the current crop if HL tanks although the Tiger 1 and Hummel are decent.

All that said I wouldn't recommend them to most running rc armor today.

Jerry

Yup, and the best thing going for the Bandai line-up is that they are bigger in size. The StuG IV it it's molded tan color is a beast and I will put it together someday, but as a static kit though.

I like to dust too as well as battle.

I know it was a risk announcing the auction on a tank forum, but oh well, doesn't seem like there is very much interest anyway. If you look at the fine print it says:

"it's the reissued kit,not 1982 kit.has diecast suspension parts,RC board(uses servos)and BRASS gear boxes."

I don't know if that makes a difference in your overall impression of the tank. My main interest was the kubelwagen, which I would probably pay $50-60 for. So I guess the real question - is the Stug IV worth $150 or so? Do you think the brass gearboxes and diecast suspension addresses some of the fragility you were talking about?

Thanks,

Russ

Most of those come with the stamped metal gears you see in toys. Unless the owner bought the replacement gears available for it, that's what you will get. Working with the plastic will show how brittle it is so watch for that. The die-cast suspension is just that ... die-cast and no big deal. I'd say $150 to $180, not much more.

Oh yeah, and you will either have to buy replacement metal tracks from KK or pin all the links yourself. I got halfway though one side and gave up!

I think for all three kits that it's a good price. Looks very interesting.

that's not that high here in belgium a new tamiya kubelwagen cost 100 euro, ive seen this kit on a modelevent for 270 euro thats much but for the two together it is a affordable price that's my opinion, the bandai stug is a nice kit no one makes it , yes asiatam sell it but its conversion is simply crap, on the bandai its fits

If you look at the bid history you sometimes see a bunch of bids from people with a zero (0) ebay scores, meaning they have never successfully bought or sold anything on ebay. Clearly some of these folks are shills or sham bidders who just like the idea of jerking peoples chains. Some sellers refuse to accept bids from people with (0) scores for this reason.

The bid history for this Stug IV jumped from $225 to $300 (large jump) from a bid from "4***e (0)," who coincidentally has multiple bids on other items I've been looking at. That person has been on ebay greater than 30 days as there is no newbie icon by the name. It's very strange that with all this bidding, he (or she) has not made a single successful purchase.

That's my rant for the week, sorry

Russ

That's why it pays to do a little investigating ... on everything concerning the auction. I've seen the 1/16 Kubel's go for about $45 to $55 bucks and the Bandai StuG can be had for a buy it now price of $225 ... at times, might be one on there now for that the last time I looked and was on eBay.

the asiatam is not worth purchasing jeff, nothings fit and for the price they ask ... we have a guy in the club who have the asiatam, its trash shortly said ... if you have skills boven average you can get it right ... for someone new it is not recommended it simply don't fit on HL or tamiya

this guy better wait on another action of the stug IV , don't forget this one has brass motorboxes is not a bad sell at all

I already have the AsiaTam kit. Too bad I didn't hear about it sooner but I'm sure I can overcome the issues IF I decide to build it. My Bandai StuG IV came with those cheap stamped metal gears and are not the brass ones that KK sells, so unless he is calling them brass they are the cheaper version. They cost about 35 to 50 bucks.

And the Kubel shown in the picture of the auction is the one with the full interior, engine detail and does not have a motor. I have all three Kubel kits, just none of them are RC.

I would offer him my Bandai StuG kit but I started on the tracks already but is complete. It would be a heck of alot cheaper than this auction, for sure.

Hi Rampa,

I too have the Bandai Stug iv and think it's excellent. Okay so theire is no real working suspension, but the rest  of the kit is nicely detailed and converts to R/C easily and more. I put HL RX18 in mine with a BB gun and side traverse too. The other thing is if you are running the stock gearboxes, you would need to use bearing fit loctite on the output clamp collar to stop it turning. Apart from that it's great - I paid £99 for mine about two years ago so maybe $150 dollars is a fair price?

Cheers

The gears are not bad but are very noisy as all brass boxes tend to be. the Bandai gear box sometimes is sloppy and lends to very fast gear wear. from my experience i would recommend against this upgrade. and go with the HL stug boxes. Overall i think it is more cost effective to get the HL p4 and the Asiatam stug4 mod. (even considering the Asiatam warping problem as it is inconvenient buy not a total loss). just my 2 cents
