It’s been a while since I last posted, the assembly of the 50cc ESM Spitfire is almost complete. I changed my mind from installing a G62 and purchased the new DLE 55RA, a nice engine and should fit very nicely within the cowl, especially having rear exhaust.
 
I have run into a problem with installing the engine mount cylinder, its too large in diameter to fit into the fuselage; it’s over sized by approximately 1/16", (2mm). I am sure there are other ESM aircraft owners that have run into a similar problem with the fiberglass engine mount cylinder. Before I start hacking away at the fuselage; I would like to hear what other ESM aircraft owners did to allow the cylinder to fit into the fuselage.

 

This ESM Spitfire build has been a real pain in the backside; I had to fix problem after problem that should have been picked up by quality assurance before the Spitfire was released by the manufacturer. All other problems were fairly easy fixes, but this engine mount cylinder installation may become a nightmare to fix/fit

Good day DB; I very much appreciate your assistance. The measurements of your spare cylinder will dictate whether I purchase a replacement mount cylinder or enlarge the fuselage opening. The following measurements of the engine mount cylinder were taken with a digital calliper.

 

On the cylinder I have, where the engine bolts on is: 5.140” or 130.5mm or 5 9/64” Dia.

 

The end that inserts into the fuselage is: 5.190” or 131.8mm or 5 13/64” Dia.

 

The fuselage opening that the cylinder inserts into is: 5.123” or 130.1mm or 5 1/8” Dia.

 

As you can see by the measurements of the mount cylinder, the fuselage opening is too small by 1.7mm or 3/32” diameter to allow insertion of the engine mount cylinder.

Status: online 		ForcesR, don't feel like you are especially unlucky. I finished an ESM t-6 II recently. While it flys and looks great, it was a real PITA. Holes misaligned, parts didn't fit, poorly glued in places and on and on. Just huge amount of extra work. I think it is the price you pay for only paying 1/3 of what the plane should cost. Take your pick - cheap and lot of work, or expensive and lot easier. Now that I'm done, not so bad. At the time I was cussing and shouting at the walls.

Sorry its taken me a while but had to replace my  digital calliper.  My spare tube measures:

5.128"  or 130.29 mm at the engine mount end and 130.51mm at rear end.

If i remember mine was a tight fit.

I also have a spare fuz so if you require anything just ask.

Your spare engine mount is smaller in diameter then the one I have, so based on your measurements I am going to order a replacement mount. There is no way I would even try to insert this oversized engine mount into the fuselage.

Status: offline 		Unfortunately I lost my ESM 89" Spitfire during testing. I have a perfectly good engine cowling, set of Spring Air retracts, Likes Line struts, wheels wheel pants, and cannons ready to drop in if anybody interested. Will sell all at a reasonable price. Paul

Status: offline 		Yes, not rebuildable. Suspect one of the elevator servos gave out. This plane flies really well and flew it about a dozen times getting the engine settings right. It surprised the hell out of me when it went in. I guess a I'm not meant for a Spitfire. Lost two in a year. Paul

Status: offline 		What servos were you using?
It seems the only way for an elevator problem with two servos is one of them completely locking up in a full deflection. ( I don't use a y connector on dual elevator servos, I use two channels on the receiver instead)

Status: offline 		I think thats where I screwed up. I used Hobby People AM 50 High Torque Metal Gear servos. The plane was flying straight and level, basically hands off, then took a nose dive from 300 feet. I don't think the servo stripped in flight, but rather the vibration caused the electronics in one of the elevator servos to go AWOL. The crash was so bad, there was not much evidence left electronically to analyze the problem. By the way, the two elevator servos were on a Y harness. One going bad will affect the other one.
