i recently decided to get back into the hobby after a 2 year break. I got all my cars back running except my hpi nitrostar .12.

Symptoms:
- starts and runs only at half-full throttle. as soon as i let off, it dies. tried manufacturer settings and everything in between setting wise.
- fuel is good as it runs in all my other nitros with no problem.
- tried new plug
- made sure to rule out possible air leaks.

What am i missing?

Check your low speed needle. If it only has a HSN, check you idle stop screw and readjust the throttle opening to 1/16 in. You may be able to go to 1/32nd but throttle response may be a bit dodgy.

Maybe try cleaning the carb. It could be gummed up after this time.

Sometimes when mine sit for a while, they run like that, but sort of clean themselves as fuel runs through the carb and after about 1/2 tank of running they're fine.

Have you tried increasing the idle some? Does it idle and run fine, but once you go OVER 1/2 throttle and release it dies? Perhaps your HSN might be a litle rich?

I had a similar problem once, and leaned the HSN a bit and it took care of it. Just a thought.

its the other way around. It only stays alive at half throttle or more. dies even at 1/4 throttle.

Check Idle Stop setting. These engines were made by Toki in Japan and they have simple carbs. If it runs at full throttle, then it's the idle stop screw. I have the .15 version and it has the same carb.

ok i will try all of these this weekend. but correct me if im wrong. i havent played with idle screw becuase i am under the impression that if it was idle screw issue, the engine would have been running at minimal throttle? i know it wouldnt run at no throttle but if it was idle screw wouldnt it at least run at minimal throttle?

The thing is, if the idle stop screw moves from a good setting due to vibration you will have problems with a dependable idle. As smooth as these engines seem to run, they vibrate at super high frequency and it is this frequency that loosens adjustment screws only secured by a spring.

They were actually made by Shuwa (Mecoa), who manufactures engines for Toki, HPI, Tamiya, and several other companies.

Did you get this fixed? If so, what was it?

Thanks

unfortunatly no. i planned on taking the engine off and and attaching it to a piece of wood to rule out almost everything.

I got the engine off the car and realized the flywheel was spinning free of the shaft. After a painstaking amount of labor i finaly got the clutch bell off. It was a pain to get off as the flywheel was loose from the shaft.

both spring on the clutch were cracked and broken. Now i cannot get the flywheel off the shaft. the nut holding the flywheel on is impossible to turn as when i turn it, it turns with the shaft. i have tried using a fan for heat with no luck. im at my wits end with this engine.

this engine has less then a gallon of gas through it so i dont want to junk it until its the ONLY option.

The broken clutch springs would contribute to an unreliable idle. There might be thread locker on the flywheel nut. Heat the nut with a heat gun.

i finally got it off. some of you may not agree with how i got it off but i believe it was the only way. i took the head off the motor to where i can see the piston moving up and down. i used a piece of rubber (the rubber cap off glow ignitor) and 2 pencils inside the rubber cap to hold the piston from moving while i unscrewed the flywheel. i just ordered a new flywheel, collet, and clutch. once it comes in i will test it out and let you guys know
