The local paper is running a nice story line on the rally. Small town support is awesome! Keep in mind we are in the heart of NASCAR territory and people around here love to come out and watch fast stuff. Today the paper ran a front page blip and my phone has been blowing up with people wanting to know more and planning to come watch.

Again I thank our sponsors! Dalton Sportswear, RTL Fasteners, RC Pilot emagazine, RC Report Magazine, and Great Planes/Hobbico.

Vic, The Piedmont is one of the few areas that I could survive down there in NC.
Besides you always can use a bit of the Jar Juice to help overcome some of the symptoms , speaking from experience there on a trip to the Piedmont many, many years ago.

LOL there have been a few reality shows from this area.

Vic - I plan on leaving Elkton, MD around 9:00am. The problem with the trip is DC...man I hate that town...and 495 as well if you get my drift. I probably won't roll in to Hickory till about 6...either way I'll give you a buz.

Virginia drivers and the way they sit in the hammer lane on 81 is much worse than going thru the tunnels IMO.
Since I work in Asheville and live in Valdese, 6 will be perfect. I plan to be at the field for a little while around 6-7.
For sure give me a ring, I will be available.

Well…just got back to the kids place from North Carolina and the Speed Rally.
First Impressions: What a great bunch of guys to spend a day or so with. I’ve been to some pretty snotty clubs over the years but not so at the CAM Club. Everyone treated you like they had know you all their life…kinda expected that from guys in that area…folks that I have met from NC are friendly people!

What a great field to fly at!... the online pics just don’t give flying in the Piedmont foothills justice. Lots of room and a beautiful view. I could live in that area in a heartbeat!
I got there on Friday evening and got a flight in with the Stryker just to get the feel of the field and the airspace and I was happy. Landing approaches were long and obstruction free. I chose to land in the grass but the runway is sand covered with a silt fence material which was pretty neat!

Everyone arrived the next morning and we all signed in Vic is a great guy and conducted the pilot meeting. He stressed that the event was for “FUN” and that is exactly what it was. No pressure, no rules (except flying over or towards the pit and spectator area) and fun it was.
We flew two passes in each direction and got an average for the four. Thanks to the Radar Operator (sorry I can’t remember his name) who stood out in that heat all day right in the line of fire. My hat is off to you brother!

The only down side of the whole event was the miserable rotten heat I’m not sure what it got to but it was well over 100F all day. The spectators from the community came out in the morning but left around 11:30 because it was just so terrible hot. I think the heat kept some pilots from coming to the event and I was a little disappointed with the pilot turnout. Three cheers for the brave guys who did!

I managed a 151.5 average and a high pass of 155.6 which I was really happy with in the heat (thought for sure I would burn the ole Mega 16/30/2. With the help of a good online friend who shall remain anonymous (who I finally got to meet)…We made a dragster motor change (soldering and all) and tested another motor later in the afternoon. Well…between the heat and our prop choice that motor managed to push the ole Stryker to 160 into the wind before the happy smoke appeared…and she burned…the smoke trail looked cool. Thanks brother for a great day and getting me to a new personal high for the Stryker!

Vic what can I say Thanks bro for the event and all the work you guys did….tell all the club members who worked I said thanks! You guys that weren’t able to make it I would encourage you to go to the event next year! I plan on it!
Skip

Skip, Thanks for the nice words and I'm glad you had a great time.
First off, thank you to my clubmates! The guys in Caldwell Aeromodelers are the best team to work with in anything I have ever done. These guys have been volunteering and asking how they can help for months and they came out and hosted a great show Saturday in some pretty tough heat.
Second, Thank you sponsors! Full Throttle Jets/Dalton Sportswear gave us awesome hats, towels, glue caddies and other great things that make the event personal for the pilots.
RTL Fasteners sent a master set of fasteners and coupons for us to raffle off. I haven't counted the money yet but it was a pretty nice roll.
Hobbico/Great Planes provided a Rifle kit with motor and some nice battery tools that the winners were very happy to get. Some us us used the FAST coozies to keep a frosty beverage descrete and cold later in the day
These companies made it possible for us to ensure each pilot came home with at least one prize. THANK YOU!

Now for the report...
I did not have the best day of flying but had a great day of tearing stuff up. Nobody broke 2 bills this year even though I had 250 stickers ready to give out.
If anyone watched the news you will know the weather was hard to handle. My truck said 108 on the way home. Unfortunatly this may have kept some pilots away but the community came out for a show. At one point there were over 100 people there. I don't know of too many model airplane events where spectators outnumber pilots 10:1! They came out for a show and got one.
Fast planes and hard hits. Enjoy the first round of pics.

Thanks to the Pilots who made this possible.
A special thanks to Arctic Flyer and Greg Doe for travelling so far to fly fast.

Something wasn't right in the universe thats for sure!
Some of the guys went out Sunday and were looking at the crater and started laughing that there was even a wing crater. Pretty serious hole for dried clay.

The 150 mph Stryker is pretty awesome...!
With those super high temps I know for sure I'd make a Hill Billy swimming pool in the back of my truck.
It looks like the throttle cable on that crashed plane is reusable...was the plane up to full speed when it decided to stop taking orders from the pilot..?

CP, it was taking orders from the pilot...all the way to the crash site.
The pilot just wasn't giving good orders

George, the newspaper files are too large for RCU. I'll send it to you by email.

There are 3 types of RC pilots......

1 Those who have crashed....
2 Those who are gonna crash sometime soon....
3 Those who are crashing right now.

One woman walked up and said two things that I can be kinda proud of. First was, "That was amazing! I could feel the ground when it hit!". The other was "I am very impressed that even with all that damage, I never heard a cuss word from you."

Pretty sure I was just in shock.

Great public relations job Vic.
I wouldn't have handled it as well.
I would have probably told her that I crash these F@@kin things so F@@kin often that my F@@kin psychiatrist has me taking hand fulls of these F@@kin red pills all time time.

On the brighter side, it looks like the engines might have come out OK....?
The bad thing about running a carburetor on planes this fast is the strain they put on the engine case..in case of sudden decelleration trauma. This is a good reason for running a nylon venturi.
