so i want to build a small airboat with balsa and losi micro crawler electronics and i have 2 questions:

#1, do you want the motor to be speedy or torquey? i would think speedy so it lets of more air giving it more power?

#2, where could i get a small enough (cheap) prop?

thanks, Jake

You want the motor to be capable of the middle zone between speedy and torquey. If you have a speedy motor (high Kv) you will need to use smaller diameter/lower pitch to get it to turn up in its "powerband" whereas a torquey (lower Kv) will be able to turn larger diameter/pitch props at a lower rpm.

Small props can be had for electric park flyers and the like. The prop size/pitch is dependant on what the motor is capable of. You may need to experiment with different props to find one that the motor will spin well enough, and provide enough thrust to move the craft you're going to build. If you build the hull too big and heavy, your motor may not have the oomph to get it moving well.

Listen to Mr. Minnesota! He's good (real good ).He's dead on. I have a wooden 21" x 13" and put a 700 motor ( brushed ) with a 8"x 4 pitch on 2S prop  as a puller and fly. Watch the prop, i've been cut once and that was enough. Put a push-pull switch which cut off juice to rx for safety. Coat inside with thinned epoxy to waterproof.

I'll go one further on the epoxy bit - use finishing resin. Its already thinner in viscosity and is fuel proof. I use this on the outside of my projects by itself or with fiberglass cloth. I use Pacer Z-Poxy PT40 myself, but West Systems is very good too (but more $$).

One other thing to keep in mind - Know the limits of your ESC! If you try to push it farther than it should be pushed, you may end up with a burnt up ESC or a fire. If using LiPo, be especially careful. Use the right electronics for the job.

I forgot 1 thing that Harold of Cajun airboat told me. Now a prop like 8 x 4 will move more air than a prop like 8 x 6. Reason is a 8 x 6 will have a small air cone which is more concentrated. This differs iin boats where a small mono will use a 632 prop which has a small cone and be blazing fast. I have many 22" monos and do move. I use a 90 amp on my airboat above.

Low pitch props will turn faster but move the boat slower (think diesel tractor pulling a tree stump). High pitch props will turn slower but move the boat faster (think top fuel dragster).

In a perfect medium, a given craft will move forward however many inches of pitch the prop as per revolution. 4" pitch = 4" forward per revolution for example.

Good luck to the OP. Airboats are fun to build and even more fun to run I think. Nowhere near as fast (generally) as a wet-propped boat but still fun IMO.

woot!

thanks for all the input guys but, i may have left out a major detail: i already built the hull, and its only 6"x3". so i need a tiny prop and im using everything from a losi micro crawler. sorry about the misunderstanding guys. i already waterproofed the electronics with plasti-dip and the hull with hot glue in all of the cracks, inside and out, and im probably gonna paint it with a couple thick coats of black. this thing wont see much water, mostly around my house and possibly some mud or puddles. once again thanks guys!

For a prop check the mini helicopters for a tail rotor blade. That may work for you. Your LHS(local hobby shop) may have them. Dennis

Do you think you could snap a photo of your rig and post it?

lol ya, it is.... i guess. ive been into micros for about a year and a half or so, so its about the right size for me. i got the steering figured out and got all the electronics in and tried a homemade prop and i could only feel the air about an inch from it. maybe dead battery or the ps2 controller motor isnt fast enough. im sure i can find something better around here somewhere........

I made one up from a few blocks of balsa and the internals from a micro heli....  sadly I couldn't work out the twin thrust the 2 rotor motors gave me....  The tail rotor blades from a micro heli would work fine for this I think.
