Hi John,

Don't know anybody who moulds them but Mick Reeves sells hard rubber foam that can be turned down...prob not a brilliant surface finish and would be hard to put detail on, but worth a look maybe...

Cheers,

Dick

How 'scale' do they have to be?

A guy had a set of Sierra Precision custom retracts for a Sea Fury
yesterday at a fly in with custom wheels fitted with Dubro tyres.

He mentioned that Dubro sell tyres only in a wide range of sizes.

John.

How badly do you want them? $$$$$
http://www.glennis.com/

If he doesn't have them he will make them. Very nice absolute scale kit, sometimes a bit heavy but oh so nice.

Not that urgent, it’s actually for a friend of mine he has built a scale SAAB Vigan (I think that’s the right spelling!). He has had a bespoke undercarriage made (legs and hubs) which requires the tyres to be finished! If you know this plane, you will know that the wheels are very narrow, and will have to be made to fit these hubs!
Many thanks for the link, the more options the better!

Regards

John

If you have plugs of the actual tires, I can mold solid rubber ones

Hi.

I guess that its Peter Disney 's Einar Johnsson 1/9 Viggen the tires are for. I have made the rims for him, and I also need more tires.

If I send you one main wheel tire and one front tire? Can you make more out of that?
The main tires are dia 70mm and about 20 mm thick
The front tires ar dia 50mm and about 14 mm thick

Best regards Daniel

Yes Daniel, it is me!

A big thanks to everyone who has come up with options so far. I asked John if he had any ideas and he posted on here.  Seems there might be a way forward

Pete

Daniel,
One tire of each is enough to make the molds and tires. I'll send you a PM with more information.

For best results you have a machined aluminum mold per tire.

OK, makes sense. You don't have a photo of a plug do you?
What I wonder is, do you remove the center part of the plug-where the wheel would go?
Thanks!

With a machined aluminum mold, there is no plug

Danish guy did this for his home built turbo propped Kingair, there should be a thread with these and more pictures floating about.

I would asume it's CNC'd but can't confirm it, I believe he's quite the craftsman.

CNC not required, but probably would be helpful.

I posted a thread 6 years ago when I built the tires for my Airworld Me-262.

Here it is:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5185522/anchors_5185522/mpage_1/key_Tire%252Cmaking%252C101/anchor/tm.htm#5185522

I made the plugs by turning a block of aluminum to 1/2 the profile of the tire. I cut the tread pattern (simple cross hatched grooves) by making a angled fence for my rotary table that a hacksaw blade could rest against. I cut the grooves one at a time with the hacksaw blade, then turned the rotary table 10 degrees and cut the next one. Once all the grooves in one direction were cut I reversed the angle on the fence then cut the grooves in the opposite direction using the same process.
I used the same plug to make both halves of the mold. I drilled alignment pins to get the treads to line up properly.
The molds were silicone rubber with fiberglass around them for support.
I molded the tires with Urethane rubber with a black color additive.
They came out much heavier than I would have liked, but looked and worked quite well.
If I do this again I will spend some more time to figure out a way to make them hollow and get the weight down a little.
