Status: offline 		All control surfaces hooked up and moving in correct direction. The rudder and elevator
deflection is correct. The aileron deflection is .5" up and 1" down, caused by foward sweep of the control horn.
This differential setup is opposite of what I have come to expect of aileron differential ie more up than down.

Status: offline 		Yes you need to get the differential set for more up and less down.  I haven't got that far on my TM yet, getting lazy,  however it comes with the same hardware as my Stinson 108 and I didn't have any issues with the differential so I'm not sure what is up with the TM.

Status: offline 		I moved the aileron control rod to the rearmost lowest hole in the horn . Now get more up (1") and less down but still
have more down than up. I am going to drill a hole on the horn lower and farther away from the hinge line.
If I could remove the aileron horn I would mount it reverse of the way shown in step 6. More later.

Status: offline 		If you have at least 1" of up I would just use servo end points and differential in the TX to limit the down, or you could change the position of the servo arm, but that's just me.

Status: offline 		I now have 1 3/4" aileron movement in both directions. I will use Xmitter settings to get correct movement.
40mm is almost 1 9/16. Will set deflection for this and set down to 20 mm.. To achieve this I drew a series of lines
on the aileron horns as follows 3/4"above and parallel to bottom of aileron, 5/8" as before
and a verticle line 90 deg to aileron at the edge of the taper. I drilled a 7/32 hole in the box drawn on aileron horn.

Status: offline 		I have run into another snag. I need a adapter nut 10/1.5 mm for my Laser 1.8. The one I have is about 3/16" too long for the prop MA18/8 and tru turn
spinner combo. Tru Turn does not make one with a 1.5mm thread. I have not found a spinner nut with a10mm/1.5mm.

Status: offline 		Have you noticed that one of the "G" on the rudder is backwards.
Setting up the fuel fill/drain system and mounting the cowl.
Cutting holes for access to fill tank, needle valve, exhaust, glow plug,
and cooling.

Put dummy in rear cockpit, made some instruments for both cockpits. Mounted receivers, switch and charge jack.
Cowl mounted, most acess holes done.

My laser 1.8 four stroke weighs as much as a DLE35 with muffler and ignition module. Going to need lots of lead,
3+ lbs.

Sounds about right.

Mine before was 14.5 Lbs ended up at 18Lbs once I sorted CofG, flys great at that weight so dont worry.  I glassed mine up front in the cowl.

The Hangar 9 TM is the same size as the ECOMRC model so I would think that it would balance at the same CG.  The listed CG of 6.5 - 7 inches is incorrect and should be more like 8 inches.  Here is a post from RC Groups.


Guys I have been watching this thread a little and have been concerned about you having to add weight to the nose. I went to a lot of trouble to keep everything up in the nose and the tail as light as possible to ensure you would not have to add nose weight, or in worse cases very little nose weight.
I talked to Dick yesterday and he also had to add a substantial amount of weight. (Nice job on the ballast Dick).
For reference 4 pre production and one production kit was built and flown before we shipped, none had nose weight. As you can imagine how I felt when the first few kits that have been built by consumers we having to add excessive amounts of lead, I was pretty disappointed to say the least.
Well last night I pulled mine down of the wall ( the one I was flying at Joe Nall) and did a C of G check. Sure enough, the numbers in the manual are 1” too far forward. Mine is currently flying at exactly 8” measuring back from the LE of the dummy fuel tank, and I have flown it 3/8” further back than that. So the manual should read, C of G is 7 5/8” – 8 1/4'”.
Guys I sincerely apologize for my error, and I hope this comes as good news as you should be able to remove some if not all the lead from the nose.

Not sure of the actual measurements, but my 1/4 scale Tiggie balances on the rear edge of the fuel tank. This is also pretty much where I've seen the CG of other Moths located.

I have finally finished the Tiger Moth. It is balanced according to mfg instructions. Engine has been removed and stored until spring.
When warm weather returns I will break in the engine install it and go flying.
FYI the hanger 9 (arf) TIGER MOTH and the Flair (kit) Tiger Moth have about the same C/G range 194 -210 mm, 190 - 210 mm respectfully.
The ECOMRC Tiger Moth C/G is 146mm? Signing off till next flying season, Joe

Status: offline 		Some pictures of my Tiger Moth and lead on the motor box, there is also some under the motor box and in the cowl.  I am balancing it acording to a CG calculator at 1" farther aft than the instruction manual.  My position is also about 1" forward of the CG for the 1/4 scale Hanger 9 Tiger Moth.

Weather permitting it will have it's maiden flight in one or two days.

Status: offline 		Thanks, fotos look good. Mine is dissambled and put away. I will break in the engine in the spring. Woke up to snow and 23 degree f.. I build
and do maintnance in the winter months. I will be replacing bearings in a Saito 1.50 and finishing a 1/4 scale Sig J3 converted to a Super Cub. It is all framed up
Struts to make, equipment to be installed, control surfaces to be hinged and all covered with solartex. I am also planking the hull of a model sailing ship (HMS Bounty)
When you fly the Moth let me/us know how she handles. Mine is balanced according to instructions and feels nose heavy.

Status: offline 		I had my 3D test pilot maiden the Tiger Moth today.  CG was at 6 3/4" back from the leading edge of the fuel tank.  Takeoff was from grass and the nose was so heavy it was on the edge of nosing over during taxi.  Inverted flight required full down elevator.  At a high idle and full up elevator it would not stall, it just mushed along.  It had to be pulled up abruptly to stall it, it didn't drop a wing.
 
My pilot said it flew well and didn't seem tail heavy.  It took a little down trim to fly level at half throttle.  Looking at the elevator on the ground the down trim was barely noticeable.
 
I am moving the CG farther back, I now have it at about 7 3/8", or 5/8" farther than it was, that's using the finger tip method.

Status: offline 		Got the prop from Valley View RC.  It is a Xoar WWI prop so not correct for the plane but it was just to pretty to pass up.  However it didn't survive the nose over, I'll get a regular prop until the nose over is solved.

With the CG at 6 3/4, when the plane is held level the CG is almost directly over the wheels, not much weight on the tailwheel when it is on the ground.

Status: offline 		600Bob, Thanks for the flight report. Looks like I will be re balancing my Moth. I will wait until you finish your testing and
arrive at a final C/G location, then I will put mine back together and begin a weight reduction rebalancing program. I assume you
bought your Moth from Troybuilt models, thats where I got mine, I suggest you let them know of this thread. Hopefully they will
read it and pass the info/problems we encountered to the Mfg. and to others buying this model. I am enjoying this sharing of info
more than than the actual assembly of the Moth! The snow is gone, the cold is here to stay, the snow will be back and will stay until late spring.

Status: offline 		Yes I bought it from TBM.  I am using the new DLE 35RA engine.

I didn't want to put a huge amount of weight in the cowl so I put about 18 oz.in the cowl and the rest around the motor box.  I removed 2 1/4 lbs. from the motor box to move the CG back about 5/8", that puts it at about 7 3/8".  The updated CG for the Hanger 9 TM is 7 5/8 through 8 1/4.  So all things being equal I should still be a bit nose heavy, I figure I am now at roughly 28% of MAC.

I need to get a new prop and a bit of engine tuning then it will be ready to go again but the weather forecast is rain for days to come.

What weight is she comming out at?

Mine was 18Lbs, I packed the rear of my under caridge to push the wheels forward a little and in creased the wheel size sorted all my issues out.

Status: offline 		I weighed it before adding the last lead for the initial balance and it was 17 lbs. I didn't weigh it after I installed all of the lead but it would have come out around 19 lbs.  After removing some it should now be around 17+ lbs.
