Anyone tried this wash http://www.ak-interactive-usa.com/ on their tanks? If not, what's the popular choice amongst us tankers? I was using a simple water base solution from a company that is no longer in business, so it's now off to find another "easy to use" brand.

This brand is all over eBay (my favorite place to shop) and I've never heard of it. Gonna do some reading on it and look at their videos on "How To" but also want some feedback from you guys.

So, let's chat about some weathering techniques here instead of the usual weekend soap opera.

I think these guys do the mig pigments too. I've used their streaking grime and mud sets and I would highly recomend the
, a light overall spray of the dirt wash makes for a fantastic dust effect and really helps dull down the colors!

Ak is the new MIG. I think MIG Jimenez had a dispute ore something with future plans with mig , and went on and made AK instead. I have some product's in the mail as we speak, shiped today.

AK-011 WHITE SPIRI

AK-012 STREAKING Grime

AK-088 WORN EFFECTS ACRYLIC FLUID

I use mig to, great stuff.

Thats the stuff yellowshaker uses. It is actually made by Mig Pigments. Joe swears by it so it must be pretty good stuff.

I think I have to arrest you that one, seems like the Business part of it 'got to him' and he just walked away. I think AK is made by other's and 'they' along with Mig J , took the best of the mig stuff, made some changes and new produckt's , and called it AK.

I can add some shot's of my 1/48 KT I built while waiting 4 my Tamiya to show up. I used mig stuff, wash and pigments to dust it down. The AK stuff I ordered is on it's way now.

Okay, so how did you apply it, mix it with what and what ratio and most important, what did you do to prepare the surface before applying?

Oh yeah, NICE!!

I used the brushes in the pic.
Then if you go from pic 1 and on I :

Shaked the 'grime' bottle well and just used the stuff that was in the cap after I had shaken it .Got some of it on the brush and wiped a small amount of it off on a paper. Then I did small and large downward strokes with the small pensil , and gave it a couple of minut's and then shaked the WS bottle, and again used the leftover in the cap , stumped the large brush in some paper so it was not soaked, and did large downward strokes again..

So, straight on the base paint/color, or did you seal the paint before applying?

I'm going to get some next week and work on my Panther with it, then move on to the Sturmtiger.

Thanks for all your answers ... they really help.

It really depends on your base medium. If your base is enamel then you will want an acrylic clear before using the AK as unless specified, that too is an enamel paint.

The effects are completed with white spirit or thinner (depending on the application) and if you have an enamel base coat you will then start eating into it (trust me - I found out the hard way). I have dozens of AK items and a couple of their videos - good stuff.

My usual routine is: acrylic base, acrylic clear, AK, then another clear

You definitely want brushes like Sollie has pictured above. A wide flat brush will help you create the effect and and softer rounded brush for stumping after you apply a wash.

Hope this helps.

Edit: A matte finish will not work well for you if using the AK washes. You need a smooth surface for it to perform properly (another reason for the intermediate clear coat)

my KT is a used one, and the owner told me it has Tamiya paint. But I'm not sure how he seald it, but I gues a mix of clear and gloss maybe. It's not shiny, but I can tell there is a good coat of seal on it, so I work straight on it.. One thing though , my fenders is done by me, and I did some small stripes on them to, and they held up, and they only has tamiya acryl with no sealer on. And I have done some sessions with mig oil paint and the mig thinner for washes to make rust on them.So I have not had the any problem with that eat into the paint. only tamiya L Thinner did that, and smelled up the whole house. The AK W Spirit do smell more than the mig thinner for washes do though.

Sollie - it sounds you your combination was correct since you had used an acrylic base.

Enamel thinner over acrylic is what you want to do. Enamel thinner over an enamel base coat and you can have some problems (like I did)
