I have been going to ask the samething the past week, or so, but haven't got around to asking it .
I have a full roll, but need some more to finish my plane.

Is there something else that is close enough to it, to use if I can't find more?
.

Tower still sells Coverite, but it looks like only the painted finish stuff.

I used to be a really big fan of Supershrink Coverite. I prefer Koverall and Stix-It, now. Any of the polyester fabrics like Stitts or Nelson's are similar. The Koverall is a whole lot lighter because the fabric isn't pre-glued like the Supershrink Coverite was. It just requires an extra step to seal the weave before painting.

I have used koverall, stitts and solartex with good results. I started covering a 1/3 scale dvii and didnt have enough coverite to cover the bottom wings. Im afraid it wont look right if I switch mid stroke.

The coverite was as I've been told a straight polyeste type fabric with an adhesive applied. Given that you can probably use any of your other products and have satisfactory results. I really did like Coverite and Silkspun was the best product that they ever put out. Cancelled it for Micafilm which was really poor stuff in my estimation. I've heard a lot of reasons why Great Pain cancelled the product and most of them sound really fishy.

Great Plains discontinued the material because it was no longer selling in quantities large enough to justify its existence. In other words, the modelling public no longer bought the stuff...the same reason full many kits have disappeared; the RC public is buying ARF and RTF models instead.

MicaFilm did not replace other Coverite products, but was developed by the original Coverite company as their lightest-weight product. It did a very good job where it was intended to be used. For a number of years it was a companion to Super Coverite and Silkspun Coverite.

Super Coverite was a woven polyester fabric, Silkspun Coverite was a non-woven polyester fabric, and MicaFilm was a very light, non-woven poly material. Super was the strongest, but heaviest. Silkspun was lighter than Super, and was easier to paint because it had no weave to fill. Micafilm, as stated above, was a very light material that was paintable.

Thanks for that, Bax. I've been lurking around here hoping to pick up some tips. I have never done cloth before but was going to try something like Super Covering. If that stuff is gone, what would be a good suggestion for a replacement?

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,
Solartex is a great fabric covering that is really easy to use and coverite 21st century is also really good stuff. You dont want your iron to hot with the 21st century fabric or it will mess up the pre painted surface. Solartex is very easily painted with latex paint.

Bill, it is sad but true that most modelers are buying ARFS and the traditional kits are getting hard to find. I have started to notice a lot of cottage industry kits becoming available and there are also more short kits on the market now. It kind of seems things are coming full circle. Nothing compares with the feeling you get from turning a box of sticks into a scale flying model.

Hi Everyone;

Greetings to All from the ever warm 'Valley of the Sun'.

Grood Thread! I too miss the Coverite products, and agree that Solartex and the other iron-on fabric types are good products also. Does anyone know if a simalar product to Silkspun Coverite and MICA Film are available/being produced. I really miss Silkspun C., as it was so light and easy to use. Or; like what are you using to replace it and MICA Film?

Another light fabric covering material I miss, and only tried it on one ship, was something called Lite Span, or Light Span, or Air Span...can't remember the exact name. I purhased it directly from Andy Clancy a few years back, when he still had his Lazy Bee kit works in nearby Tempe, AZ. He swore by the stuff, I wish I had purchased more. Again, does anyone know about this covering material.

Will close for now, thanx for any further info, best regards from Glendale, Arizona,

Joe Nagy.

Yes, I used Lite Span on the Little Plane that Could from Clancy's plans. I had forgotten where I got it and have misplaced what I had. You know, at this age you hide stuff from yourself.

IIRC, you had to apply your own adhesive to it which was heat activated.

Try Coverlite which is made by Coverite. It's a synthetic tissue that you apply with an iron and balsa rite which is a heat activated glue that you apply to the frame work.

There is also Skyloft from Dave Brown which is intended to be a synthetic form of silk span.

When Coverite disappeared, I made the switch to Solartex. http://shop.balsausa.com/category_s/119.htm

I've been painting the natural,, unprimed, with excellent results. It also comes in colors, which I've sealed with Minwax Polyurethane. (oil base)

Nice work Tom. I have a 1/3 scale Spacewalker kit sitting under my bench right now. I'm going to start it as soon as I have the DVII finished. I'm going to cover it with natural Solartex and dope or latex. What engine did you use? I have a Fuji 34 and a Zenoah G38 to choose from but I think the OS 4 cyl would be really cool if Im able to find one at an affordable price.

Thanks !

I have a Sachs 4.2 in my 1/3 SW. Too much, for sure. I've seen them fly on G-38s, and Saito 300s. I prefer the 300.

You may find some build tips, here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1356049

You will like the Sig kit. Adding Solartex will only enhance your experience. The Cessna and Spacewalker in the pics, are painted in Rustoleum, with the addition of an automotive hardener. I thin the paint with acetone. The hardener does what is implied, and it also raises the gloss.

Hi Everyone,

While we're mulling over fabric covering, I'm starting to get some ideas but need some advice. I've had a design on the back burner for a couple of years now. It's a scale model of a pre-WWI plane. The covering would resemble an opaque linen.

The plane will be glow powered, so I would need a fuel proof finish. But (now that I am realizing what questions that I really need to ask) what covering would simulate that era of covering, before designs started to be commonplace on planes, etc.

So, I guess the points would be to find a covering that would be:
1. Fuel proof
2. Simulate plain linen
3. Opaque

I also add that this will not be a serious scale airplane, but I would like to add as much realism as possible.

Thanks for any input. I don't want to hijack this thread, by the way.

Thanks,

Bob

Solartex has a color called Antique. http://shop.balsausa.com/product_p/563.htm

I believe that many use it to simulate linen fabric.
