Brian You did much better than some of the rookies i have seen! The planks look easy but they will bite you almost just as fast as these helis.
Don' give it up!
Ive never flowen a fomie all mine are balsa, I may have to give the foam a try looks like a lot less to pick up after gravity takes control.

Thanx Hugh!

It would seem im opposite of you  bro....I fly my planes of all types  n sizes  like a pro...  my issues are  with my helis    lol,   fun stuff  !!!
even my hoakie flight sim  gives me some grief

Bob

I'm like you Bob, 31 years of RC fixed wings, all types, pylon racing in the 80's etc..  the most humbling thing I ever did in RC was flying a collective pitch Heli for the first time.. it seemed impossibly difficult....

It gets easier and once you master take off / landing and transition to fast fowarad flight, the fixed wing skills will kick in automatically..

I spent 6 months having a blast flying the helis like a pylon racer before getting the confidence to try more "heli manouvers"

I always thought this was a great idea. It has been to long for me to remember most of my electronics training.  I thought all diodes dropped .7v in forward bias.
Thanks for the informative video.

@ Spiros - Good deal re: voltage regulator.

@ All - Had a nice morning. No chores, just flying (errrr, crashing). Took the MQX out for a walk and foisted some blather on ya and then took a notion to take the "Clouds Fly" glider out for walk and with the exception of the nearly complete lack of "in frame" and the requisite crash I had a blast. It's back together and ready for an early morning "no wind" flight.

I killed my tail on the MCP X today (ironically by the inherent blow out form the boom being too short) and replaced same about an inch longer with a solid CF rod.

Wind is way too high to fly now so's I will fly before dark!

Best to all!

b

I am very impressed with 2 minutes of flight time.  Better luck tomorrow!

Kind of you Bryan. I have it set up with Ailerons and I think that is what's tripping me up.

This is prolly where I should have paid more attention to understanding "dual rates" as I don't use them on my helis.

Thinking about flipping the switch and flying it with just the elevator and rudder.

Will see in the 'morrow!

Flew a few more packs through the MCP X with the now elongated solid tail boom and is it possible that this thing could be any more fun to fly???

What a phreakin' hoot!

Sold my Quark and Align 500 head yesterday. Gotta love the web!

Noted a minute ago a new Quark is 78USD and I sold my used one for 75USD.

Prices are fallin' on the old tech.

I wonder when Sparan is going to join the "revolution"?

Brian, you must having lots of fun there! The flying field is nice, and suitable for a plane. I like its noisy motor/propeler.
The mqx seems indestructible !
I see you got a nice value out of the gyro. Too bad a good gyro costs that much. The "new" one may be refurbished or relabeled (I think Hobbymate HB790 is a clone but can`t find it at a reasonable price).
You get that scale body up in the air.

Simon, good to see there is a flybarless step by step guide. Well done for the effort. Too bad I won`t make use of it, except if I find time to master the 450 or I find no working gyro and have to go to a flybarless unit instead.

Bryan, thanks. I hope it is useful for such a similar case. Although there are some large shops that sell electronic components I could find no Schottky diodes as they told me noone uses them as they cost more. Well, the price difference is negligible but it seems that buying a device is cheaper than building one of your own these days and if you add this little price difference from there to there then it ends up way more than buying it ready.

Well, my electronics knowledge is very basic but I`m happy I can save me money. A good example is the old now 5 channel home theater amplifier stopped outputting to rear speakers and the front ones started to have some intermittent output. I did not sent it for a repair as I knew they would charge me changing the output mosfets but I opened it and found it uses a relay in the pop up protection circuit. Changed the rear speaker relay and cleaned the front speakers relay contacts and is as new (as it is not very used).
Another good example is the dishwasher. Suddenly, well after a power failure, it started blinking its leds and could not start a wash cycle. My wife asked a technician from the official distributor, came home and told her that most probably the main board has gone bad and that the machine should be brought to the service center and that means I would had to pay for the transportation too. Plus the main board, plus labor, plus some extra that would find... so she told her it is better to buy a new dishwasher... He took 40 euro for visiting and gone.
I came home and was told all this from my wife, I told her she should not pay for visiting as he did nothing but tell her it`s not working, we knew that, and he should charge something only if he actually did something.
I opened it and again... a relay again, it was stuck this time most probably out of the power failure (power company failure) and the supply of power again, I just hit it and the contacts got unstuck. Since then it is a year that keeps working as it should...

I was watching a documentary video for the short-lived devices, how they design a device not to last forever or at least for a long term period. Not too green thinking but it makes the world running (on garbage).

Hey everyone!!

Made it back from NZ after 10 great days. Spent 3 hiking the Routeburn Track and the rest on all them tourist attractions. Would really recommend it to everyone!

All this talk about FBL and Planks is quite interesting, but the planks don't really appeal to me, unless they are SUPER fast pylon racers!

In NZ the weather was AMAZING. 10 full days without any rain at all, so that was really a blessing!

Glad to hear that you lot are all having fun.

In the automotive industry, we say: It takes a good engineer to design something that lasts forever, but it takes a GREAT engineer to design that same thing that last only until the end of the warranty.

@ Bryan - I'm sure a hefty price tag will follow if Spartan gets into the fray!

@ Spiros - It' called "planned obsolesence". It's a scourge. That's why I buy Nissans, Toyota's and Mitsubishi's. They simply DON'T fail!

@ Kozzy - Welcome back and glad you had a blast!

@ All - Gonna go "fly" an airplane!

Best!

Hi Guys,

In Las Vegas for NAB (National Americian Broadcasters) convention and catching up with a lot a good mates in the TV broadcast industry. Saw this chineses exhibitor  there who make helis and stabilized copters with cameras. Ask the nice chinese lady on the booth if I could take a few photo to show here.

Anyway thought they might be of interest....The batteries on the big heli were 2 X 20,000mAH lipos and the carbon fibre blade would take your head clean off!!!

Would have nice to have seen this thing spool up and take off.

Hope you are all well.

Cheers,

Ian

@ Ian - Yah, those are the size of single rotors flown at my club. They are formidable!
I really like the multi rotor a lot and am intruriged by them!

@ All - I SUCK as a fixed wing pilot! I drilled the devil into the ground yet again. I think I may have one more rebuild in her? Jeff, what was the name of that lil no-wind trainer you and I talked about??

As for BIG helis I took the 500 for a walk today. That thing just scares teh begeezies outta me. What a power house!

Simon, watched your FBL video.
I see you`re using a V2 type swashplate, which is smaller than the Sport/Pro swashplate. Most probably you wanted to keep compatibility with the frame.
You can see here my modded LH $9 kit frame, with the elevator servo moved 3mm to the back, and the Sport swashplate in it. The linkages are quite nice there.

Then the pitch linkages would be more straight and maybe the Sport/Pro swashplate gives a smoother movement transition to the blade grips for a more accurate control, as I think the inner (head) to outer (servo) ball links ratio changes from a Sport/Pro to the V2 swashplate, with the Sport/Pro giving better control.
Well, never mind, you have it all set up there going strong.

@ Spiros - Nice looking bird! However, I wonder what the things are pointed by the yellow arrow?? I don't have them on my birds!

@ Simon - Got my new RJX head and 2218 motor in today. I am going to (even though I have assembled several FBL heads) put mine together EXACTLY like you did in the viddy!

@ All - Wx is deteriorating today and will be bad all weekend! Spring is turning to summer with WELL needed rain!

All the best!

Thank you Brian.
Yes, but you don`t own a SPORT helicopter.

OK, I almost got a heart attack ! I sum up the component`s cost and found that this costs about $200... crap... not that cheap after all... with no labor cost included... and not the Tx or charger or anything an RTF has... sure the Belt-CP was a bargain... even the Blade 450...

Perhaps next week??

So some details.

Under the scale fuse is my Tarot 450 FBL. All fairly easy to put together, although not being able to fix the tail in there worries me, there wasnt much clearance for my tail servo ball link where it joined the tail mechanism.

I think it looks good, hopefully it won't fly to heavy. I'll do a viddy this weekend.

Regards, Phil.

Hey Spiros, good looking heli and looks well built. How does that canopy manage to stay on??

Here is a canopy tip, only drill your holes for the canopy posts with the biggest battery you are going to fly with attached to the heli. It is quite often a big difference with the batt on or off the heli for canopy fitting purposes.

Ian,

What sort of a junket is that your on, helicopters in Vegas - Pleeease!!  I fact I have a mate at the same junket err conference.
