Phil, that heli looks great and congratulations on the maiden flight.

I am also really impressed with the camera. Is that the #16 key cam?

Looking forward to catching up when I get back from Perth.

Currently airborne at 45,000 ft. 200 miles south of the coast in the Great Australian Bight. . . Gotta love satellite broadband.

Nice test run Phil !
It sounds smooth and looks cool !

BTW, I saw in the video the tail blades are installed the other way. The sharp edge should not lead.
I`m not quite sure if you have changed them in the second, the maiden, video as it is not that clear, not focused on tail blades.

Well spotted Spiros, Yes I noticed that the next day after I reattaching the tail at midnight.

I had an eventful afternoon at a flying field at Ku-ring-gai within a big showground facility. Had it all to myself.

Good news was that the Jet-Ranger fuse on the Tarot flew beautifully, a successful maiden and the  balance, power etc was all good.

I am downloading to Youtube and will upload shortly. How do you get the actual commencing frame with the start arrow on this screen?

Hi Phil,

You must use the youtube tag of the forum editor, not in the quick reply but in the normal editor (normal reply).
It goes like this:

[yοutube] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWM_3CyoLzI[/yοutube]

Those in red is the youtube tag. Watch you leave no space between, there is a space now but do not leave any.
Do not copy/paste the above tag example, the "o" is a Greek character there, so the tag is not active.

Paste the youtube link in the editor. Watch you copy the youtube link with the format as shown in the example. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWM_3CyoLzI )
Highlight it and then press the youtube tag button on the editor.
It will automatically add the tag. Normally with no space between, but if it leaves a space then just delete it.

Then the result is this:

Looking forward for a video !

Spiros

If I am honest I do not really see the appeal of hard core 3d flying. Sure it takes lots of skills but half the very good pilots have those huge helicopters from their sponsors and most moves are very rough, I usually like to see simple rolls and loops being performed at high speed.

I also do not like nitro helis as they are extremely expensive to run, plus they sound horrible.

I ain't saying that he isn't a good pilot, Im just saying I don't really see the appeal apart from showing off to friends

I bet the heli easily cost 4-5grand :0

Hi Guys,

Not sure if the above link will work, but Ill work it out later.

This is the maiden flight of the Tarot FBL with Jet Ranger fuselage. It was all good, didnt notice the weight or the tail heaviness, I think the FBL sorts that out for you, You have to love that.

<iframe width="480" height="360" src=" https://www.youtube.com/embed/J9PSInjWFwY?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

in case the above didnt work, enjoy.

I will also upload a vid of the Gaui X5 FES, But I must say my cap cam abilities are just abismal. I'm going to buy some sunglasses cams.
Phil

Brian,
The fibreglass lamb is out the back having a feed.

I had this flying field all to myself this afternoon, and this guy comes from the next area (which was a children's playground 100 metres away with trees in between) and says nice Jet-Ranger, is that  a Trex 450 underneath, I was a bit surprised as you never get that level of knowledge. We had a good chat and he told me about the local heli guys at a nearby field that meet each Sunday, so I'll catch them soon and then he says this field we were at is used by fixed line planks, but is rarely used, so use anythime, Rob, Ingleburn you in??

Best Phil

Ku-ring-gai is about a 5-15min drive from my house, so I might even pop round and say hi!

If you do, can you PM me the location and time?

Glad to hear that the FBL system works with the fuselage, the heli would look more "scale" without the flybar and it is quite evident!

@ Phil - Great flying and suddenly I have "lamb envy"???

No flying here as the Wx is rain for the next two days! Still sorting my "Screaming bearing" issue!

All the best!

b

PS I feel similarly about the 3D stuff. Fun to watch but even if God imbued me......

Hi Kozzy,

I will probably have a go there next Sat afternoon. It is within the St Ives show-grounds, you go through the main entrance and then when about 300  - 400 metres in on the left there are some dirt roads off to the left, take one of them and it will lead to the ku-ring-gai Flying Club. If that's busy there is a big square field within the show-grounds at the far northern end that is used a couple of times a year for horse jumping. Ill PM you if I'm going with my mobile. Ingleburn may be interested, I think Rob is still away. The following weekend I'm in Hong Kong so thats a no go.

Yeah I can 3D like what's his name, but its dull for others to watch so I choose to fly like an amateur. But I also agree I much more enjoy watching quality sports flying than the wacky 3D stuff!

Regards,

Phil

Hey Rob,

The Camera was the $12 Turnigy Video camera. I think its too hard to keep the subject in the field as you have to attach it to the brim of your cap, so I've purchased some full  HD sunglasses with built in camera, it looks great, but cost more than $12 by some margin.

Phil

Hey! I think he stole one of my moves! I did that .002 seconds before impact the last time I crashed!
I've been lurking for the past three weeks trying to keep up with the posts. Everyone looks like they're having a great time.
I haven't been able to fly in as many weeks because of the never ending wind over here. I'm also three weeks into 5 weeks of training on some new CNC machinery we bought.
I hope to get some stick time in soon and post a little video as well.
Nice flying guys!

Joaquin

@ Phil - Great flyin' with the X5! Looks like a nice club!

@ Joaquin - I almost sent out a search party for ya! Glad yer back. (I need a new plastic key cam mount. I killed mine)

@ Spiros- I missed your posts!

Yah, I have checked all bearings........I do notice something. The main shaft bearing are not pressed into the holders but rather sit in them. I thread locked them like Simon did with his blade grips on the viddy.

Lets see where that brings me.

If not I ran the motor without the head gear and motor sounds good.

I think I will take your suggestion in the morning and pull the FBL head and leave the swash (swash is new) and see if my T/T gear is making noise.

Best to all!

b

I finally got the tail sorted on the MD-500.  It flies well, but it is not my cup o tea.
Here is the video
I have some new vibrations that can be heard on the video and will have to fine tune that along with the bent pieces that occurred on the next flight. (not videoed, sorry).
My son maidened his trainer plank today from take-off to landing.  He has flown this airplane before, but has never attempted a landing until today.
This is just one of his 8 successful landings made today.

Went back to the field later in the day and was throwing around the HK500GT quite hard.  I tried a tictoc, just to see if I could do it.  I had sufficient altitude, but that might have caused more damage from the fall.
I did not get it on video, but everyone that saw it happen said it was the coolest thing they ever saw.
Evidently, the batteries came loose and shoved the canopy into the rotor disc, and the helicopter just froze at about 35 feet up, and just fell straight to the ground.  The entire crash site was about 5 feet in circumference, but the batteries (2) were slung over 25 feet away.  Both fairly new nano-techs had cells that were open, so both are trashed.

It bent the frame very badly and stripped the aileron and pitch servo.
I have not checked the motor and ESC, but hopefully they will be OK.

Hi Guys,

Quick vid of fininished Scale Jetranger Fuse on Tarot FBL. Maiden Vid to follow

Hi Phil,

Great looking heli mate.  I'm so very tempted to follow your footsteps with a similar project of my own!

What is the AUW (all up weight) of the bird without lipo?

As for fixing the tail, would it be possible to pack a little foam in there just to dampen any tail fuselage movements?

Simon

Nice bird there Bryan !

The color is nice too! Maybe cause I have such one MD500 but on a Big Lama.
No actually it is nice color and helps to orientation too.
The multirotor is awesome too.

Too bad to hear for the 500GT. Good you`re OK and the bird will be fixed.
