After further research (blather material) it appears Ben Franklin first proposed this in France to get them up earlier in the morning...told them it would save money on candles!

Fellow Blatherer's,

How many of you have Phoenix?  What do you think about an online ''Honorary RB Blathering Heli Flying Event''? I can get it set up, let's say tentative this Saturday say 2am UTC?  I'll pass on more details in the next couple days.  Please let me know your favorite site.  I'll surprize you with weatehr conditions ;  )

Cheers,
Ken

PURE GENIUS!

A "Web" friend of mine tried to get me interested a few years back (The idea was to play "balloon" tag with 450's) and for some reason weren't successful.

Love to try it again but will be out of town camping.

I'll watch how this goes!!

Off to the (snob) club!

Heya guys!

Went to the hobbyshop which is run by snobs who look down on you if you have anything thats not Traxxas/HorizonH/Align. Luckily they have lots of CF tubing!!

(SNIP)

I wish I had a LHS that actually STOCKED the Align parts; even if I go across town to the HobbyTown, their stock of ANY 450-class parts is lame. All they want to sell you is RTFs and TRAXXAS. When I was racing, TRAXXAS was the cheapo brand you got into when you started off; you buy their cheap kit, then, cuz everything is cheap-@$$ plastic, you spend 3x as much again upgrading piece by piece to decent hardware. Their marketing strategy hasn't changed in the last 20 years; but their position in the market sure has. Nowadays you say names like Kyosho, Losi & Associated & all you get is a look like a tree full of owls. And the worst part is, half the "experienced techs" behind the counter are just snot-nosed kids who don't even realize what a POS their product really is, they just take it for granted that this is the way you do business.

@ Menm - Yah, My smaller LHS is catering to Traxxis and the like. I think that is actually where they make all the money. Heli's are a side job and since the owners son is a pilot, helis' are still big business, but not as much as those crawlers.

@ All - Had a really nice time at the field and once again, more BSing than flying. There is an interesting faction of fellas who just show up and kinda sit there. They have the latest and greatest but kinda, don't fly! I flew my 500 the most today and have fallen in love with it. I really would like a 550 size or perhaps a 600 in the future but the 500 is really awesome!

I think I killed my tail motor on the MCP X and will replace same today and my HK FBL unit is literally coming apart and I will re glue with "heli glue".

Other than that NO crashes and I am going out TWICE next week and fly!

All the best!

What a difference a week makes. Last week the 500 was on the market and you were looking at the 130X.
Now your looking at a 600. Glad the club is working out and dont you just hate the show offs that sit there and gloat about their stuff.
I wonder if they can actually fly or just have more money than sense.

Yah, I have to admit, I knew that if I wanted to mix it up a bitt I need to do SOMETHING and getting out of my front yard was the TRICK!

RE: "Social club". Some just come out and have "hanger queens" that they just leave on the bench and fly one pack in the morning. Nice enough folks but that's almost egregious to let a 2K bird just sit there! The "word is" is that Goblin's don't like to hit the ground well. It's a 300USD fix!

Really enjoying the wide open expanses to fly in and the camaraderie of the folks! Funny thing, on a week day morning as long as Patrick is elsewhere I'm a FREAKIN' ROCKSTAR with my massive skillz!

The larger the heli the easier it is to fly, bar none! I'm going to keep my eyes open for a used 600 if it falls in my price range!

I am extatic that you are getting out and really flying that bird the way it was designed.  I really enjoy my Gaui with the FBL set-up, and my 500GT really rocks too.
I did build an HDX 450 with an Align FBL unit with an aftermarket head, and while it flys great, I just don't like it as much as the larger birds.

Enjoy that large field, and be sure and video your first loop for us.
Bryan

I think mnem has put the align servo curse on me

Flight number 90 this morning on Tarot 450 with DS410m's and it starts behaving wierd in the air.  Managed to land it and the ELE servo has gone at twitchy and jittering.  Pulled it apart and the gears are all ok.  I think the potentiometer is toast.  The other two seems to be fine it's just this one.  They have done 90 five and a half minute flights, no 3d but some hard fanging around.

Not sure if I should replace all of them with something else or try and source a 410m from somewhere.  All the local shops don't have them anymore over the ds415's.

Found this clip of exactly what it's doing....

2 observations about your flying Jonesy.

You fly your heli hard.
You fly your heli even harder.
If I were those servos I would refuse to start at all.

Glad you landed it ok. Makes you wonder if you can trust the other ones now.
Give the poor buggers a rest and do some slow circuits for a while.

As for me got 2 flights in this morning. Wind picked up on the second one and had a huge battle getting it down safely.
Was thinking about going out later on but sanity prevailed.

@ All - Camping delayed due to Princess' work (Camper/boat onsite for two days), cutting out today! Yah, enjoying the bigger bird as it has massive power and great visibility compared to the 450. HK just sent an announcement that for the 3000mah batteries so's I bought two more for a total of 7 which will allow me to fly continuously!

I hope y'all have a great weekend and look forward to seeing posts about the Phoenix "Ken's invitational Brian Blather Extravaganza!"

All the best!

b

PS Have any of you SEEN a 700 up close?? They are MASSIVE!! When they are fired up...........

Sorry for making my return way off topic but here goes....

Is anyone on here a nitro expert?  Hobbyking were selling CEN mg10 tr2's for $80 a couple of weeks ago and my friend Bob and I could not resist!  On arrival the car seems good quality and we are stuggling through the engine breakin at the moment.  We have done about 4 tanks on a rich and frequently stalling idle at present.  Anyway it all seems a bit alien to me this nitro tuning so I way just wondering if there was anyone who I could PM should I need help?  Thanks in advance!

My little mCP X is going well.  I don't have a good flight vid of it yest as I never seem to think to do a vid in good daylight but here is one from dusk yesterday.  I can fly her much better than this (honest!).  I took it on holiday last week and it had it's first three crashes in lipo's 45 to 50.  The first one was pure pilot error in unfamilar surroundings as I flew into a tree!  No damage.  The second crash it fell out the sky when it cut out on exiting a loop (no damage).  The third was the same but this time the f/s bent.  It seems you have to be careful as the mCP X does not like to be over taxed on the amps.  ESC failsafe issue?  Anyone agee?

Anyway the vid is after the rebuild and she seems no worse for the mishaps.  Thanks for those that have already commented

As for the 450's they are sleeping in their cases.  Hopefully next week I can let them rip up the sky again.  I'm warming to the idea of converting my last FB'd 450 to FBL as I just don't fly it otherwise.   Hmmmmm, what to do?

Anyway, best to all and I've enjoyed the blather and banter from a lurkers perspective whilst I've been away.  Sorry I'm way behind on vids as my internet has gone slow due to a line fault.

Simon

Simon, shoot me a pm, I'll help if I can re the nitro. I used to race nitro monster trucks for a number of years before getting into helis.  Hopefully, I'll be able to give you an answer.

Phoenix Brian Blathering report

Well all I can say is Ingleburn, Jonesy and I had a BLAST!

We did most of our blathering about Brian (who wasn't there...out camping or something...but we didn't say anything bad ) and Jonesy since he didn't have a mic!

Don't tell Jonsey but we were kind of admiring his skills, hence why we had to talk about him even more. Umm, Ingleburn, remind me to not alow gassers... too noisy! hehe

It was great talking and flying with friends literally half way around the world.  And since it was just us colonists (and prisoners), we came up with a diabolical plan to overthrow the evil over taxing pursecuting Europeans (don't tell Simon)!

We also learned in spectate you can watch the sticks on the person being spectated, very useful learning tool.

We also played 2 rounds of 3 minutes ballon popping.  Ingleburn beat me both times (I think he cheated!)

And before we knew it, two and a half hours had gone by!  We commented that it only seemed like a few minutes!  Hope you got to the football game on time Ingleburn.

Now that the inaugural event is complete, I’ll work on better scheduling for the next one.

Cheers Everyone,

Ken

Yeah where did those 2.5 hours go. Had a ball even though Im still deaf after listening to Jonesys gasser sitting on the deck while he sneaked away for a beer.
If they took away points for crashing in the balloon popping I would have a minus score.
Hope more people turn up for the next one because it was fun.
You would think the IT expert would have a mic but Im sure the 30 knot winds were enough pay back.
Thanks Ken for an enjoyable time and cant wait for the next one.
PS my team lost so my son was happy and I hope Jonesy wasnt late for the wedding he had to go to.

Well yesterdays sim time did me the world of good.

went out this morning and had a great time flying a lot smoother and getting further away.

The dreaded right turn curse returned though when I started flying faster and you could hear the tail blades protesting.

Time to sit down and check everything over again but I did notice a bit of slop between one grip and the hub so for a start Im going to replace it with this. www.rc711.com/shop/metal-tail-holder-set-for-alztrex-450-sport-p-4558.html

Other than that might play around with the software and see if I can get it sorted out.

One other thing I just thought of was Im using these tail blades. www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__14935__450_Size_Heli_White_Plastic_Tail_Blade_pair_.html

Wonder if I should try a pair of the stock ones and see if it makes a difference.

Not sure if the gremlins are back.... I've been having trouble getting the forum to load up for the last 4 or 5 days.  Same problem as last time we started a new thread.  It loads up after a while if you go to the main site and then via forums, but not from the link in the new post email you get.  Anyone else ?

Jonesy

Yes the phoenix organised sim session on saturday was cool, but it would have been much better if I had a microphone.  I will for next time.

Well I have some paypal credit from the parents as it's my birthday next week so the 450GT has been officially retired.  I have a new build starting soon.  I've ordered the kit but still deciding 100% on other bits for it.  This is what I have so far:

Tarot 450 PRO V2 FBL (I will have two of them, slightly different spec)
  • Turnigy Plush 40amp
  • Turnigy HeliDrive SK3 Competition Series with 13t
  • Hitec hs-5065MG or Ino-Lab 202hb cyclic (have not decided on these yet)
  • Align DS520 rudder
  • Orange rx 6 channel - had no problems with this on the GT
  • Tarot ZYX v1 - also from the GT
