Well, today, with my limited modeling mental capabilities and relaxed hands aided by ice cold, Mountain Brewed libations, I tried to paint this Verlinden 200mm Peiper figure to go in the KTs commander's hatch.

Did the best I could and maybe nobody will look close or if I drive it by fast it won't be scrutinized much...

He looks good to me, but I am partial to the numbers on the side of the tank!!! LOL

Seriously, the Peiper figure looks good, so drive by slow so they can see how good he looks.

I don't see anything wrong with your painting skills, do you have any special preferences on how to paint the figures. this is some thing that I have been putting back to do. maybe when I get my self a better figure then what comes with the tanks Id give it a try. not that I don't have enough projects going. your figure looks good.

Forget the figure painting.........I wish I could do camo paint that well........figures are something I would never attempt.

Hey Chiefsonn! This is the FIRST time I did this kind of figure face painting. And it was all pure, unadulterated, raw LUCK!

This is a big size bust and the FIRST I've EVER did that came out half-way decent!

Years ago I bought that Sheperd Paine book that tells how to paint model armor vehicles and especially figures/faces I kinda remembered what I read. Wish at times I'd drug it out today. That's where I got the idea of putting drips down from the turret numbers cause most were painted by hand and how to do the eyes by first painting'em white then when dry making one pass down over'em with black. Then later doing the face colors and covering any white/black around the eyes. Darn good book and I've remembered for years what I read in it! From what I read YEARS ago, that advice (what I still had in my head still) came in handy in my 'relaxed' state today...

It came body, head, and hat separate. I painted the body and hat details a couple days ago cause I was SCARED TO DEATH of the head. To paint the body and hat, since they're black cloth, I thought about it, and instead of painting'em flat black like I do the 1/16s in the past, I wanted to put some shades on'em. I didn't have any dark gray bottle paint but I had a spray can of dark gray primer so I shot some in a dish then with a brush put drips of flat black in and stured it in. When it looked black/gray enough for what black cloth would look like in the sun, I painted the body and top of the hat. Painted gloss black on the hat visor and brim. Then used just flat black to lightly highlight the creases and shaded areas. like under the collar and arms, pockets, and seams. I painted the collar boards flat back then with a silver 'dry' brush just lightly brushed over'em.

Today I took the head and put on the light face tint then the redish tint on the cheeks and high areas. Then used the dark skin tone under anything... and he looked like he should climb out of that tank, get a bag and go 'trick or treat'in'... or climb out of a small car in a ring with a bunch of other guys...

Looked at it and was POed, about to give up!... sit and pulled a 'couple'a' tops on cans of 'COURAGE' and thought about it... touched up on the light tone more THEN cleaned the brush and while it was still wet (and my hands not shakey and NOT CARING) went to merging the colors. At the first instant that I thought the 'wet' brush was loading up, I'd dip it and clean it. I only wanted to merge the colors but leave the face creases highlighted. If I brushed more it'd lighten'em and mix'em together (clean the brush!) to taper'em the way I thought sun would hit'em. Had to use another fine tip brush to tough up slightly but after a few minutes of drying (and going to the fridge), merge'em lightly again. Went around the eyes with dark tone, under the chin, ears. FINALLY said 'if I do any more I'll mess it up worse... HECK WITH IT!

Thought about giving him a 'five o'clock shadow' but I SCARED to do it!

I'm envious of all you guys who KNOW how to do this stuff and this was my FIRST (and probably ONLY time) of doing it! My HAT is off to you! And I KNOW FIRST HAND that painting 1/16 is a LOT harder than painting a figure TWICE the SIZE!

And I put these pics on here to get yer HONEST OPINIONS on'em! I just wanted to show ya that I tried cause I'm ignert about figure painting (especially FACES!) but thankful it ain't too awful gagg'in bad. LUCK!!!!!!! (and ice cold libations and 'I DON'T CARE attitude)

...but when I slow down doing the details on this KT I know I'm going to try to touch up my Tamiya tank figures.. ESPECIALLY the Commander that's been in my old KT for twenty years! Just hope I can be lucky. But I'll dig out the Sheperd Paine books...

Thanks for the encouraging opinions everybody. When I FINALLY started tackling the figure I know it was 'Root Hog or Die!' and with beginners luck I found a truffle.

Usually ANYTHING I go to do turns into ONE BIG MESS! And I have decades of experience trying to do stuff that normally ends with horrible results. I am extremely confident because I know my own personal skill limitations so there are NO surprises when massive destruction, total devistation, and complete writeoffs occur when I set out to do a project that requires even basic skill. My idioicy hasn't been contained just within the borders of this country but, due to me being in the military, has been spread far and wide to other places in the world with the normal horendious outcomes usually being achieved. I know I'M AN IDIOT and because I DO know this, there are no surprises when I take on something what will probably occur. I havn't lost one wink of sleep at night worrying about IF something will go wrong... I already know it will! So if you have anything you want FUBAR, just hand it to ME and ask me to do my best fixing it! And I will do my best but ya might as well go ahead and order another one anyway...

....and I spelled the name wrong of the writer of those great modeling books. It's Sheperd Paine... I doug out the books and saw I'd misspelled his name.

Just try'in to do the best I can... Mike in Kentucky

I don’t wish to be critical as the figure looks good there are a few small not difficult to alter details first the red piping is for artillery this should be changed to pink and the cap should be field grey with a black band and pink piping.

Camouflage will be explained soon with some figures I have to paint for Karl.

Thanks rivetcounter! I'll get a little bottle of pink paint next time I go to the model store (or I'll try to mix red & white together). I didn't have any and didn't know red was artillery, not armor. Appreciate your help and educating me cause I'm still hungry to learn... and I'll repaint the top of the hat today!

Dude, you need some counciling that does not come out of a can or bottle. Really the figure looks great but it is just a figure right? If you mess it up, you just start over.

Raptureboy, if you really new the heart of Jesus, you would have just let your comment be, "Really the figure looks great." But no, you had to say,"Dude, you need some counciling that does not come out of a can or bottle." Keep your religious and legalistic comments to yourself. This forum has enough people who really care about the person more then the "sin". Think about this, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.", Jesus told that to the accusers. Are you an accuser or a follower of Jesus?

AWWW, I don't 'mess up' as much as I joke about! Ya can't make it in this world if ya can't make fun of yourself! And (as my wife, family, and friends'll tell ya) I LOVE to make fun of ME!!! And have a good laugh! Even when I do something that turns out GREAT, I'll laughingly spin it to 'well that ain't what I planned to happen!' but (here's what I DON'T like to do!) I AM PRETTY GOOD at about anything I set out to do or make!! And ain't afraid to say so! (but I'm modest and don't like to brag...)

I just know that if things don't go 'right' then ya start over. Big WHOOP! Got ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD! Ain't much I can't fabricate, straighen out, or redo!! And I DID start over about three times on the figure face! And it finally turned out like I wanted it to.

I don't get stressed anymore about ANYTHING! ESPECIALLY since I retired from the military, cause THEN, be'in a senior NCO work'in for the Colonel, go'in to meetings with a GENERAL, and was responsible for EVERYTHING in my unit mobility section, and EXPECTED to KNOW every plan and detail. And by volunteer'in FOR that high stress position, I put MYSELF there in charge! Used to thrive on heckic stress, stomp'in out problems as they happen! And am PROUD of the job ol' 'BIG SAAGE' MASTER SERGEANT CONLEY DID! And TODAY, life is still pleasant, happy, and good! Life's too short to be so serious and worrisome, and like to lighten up my posts with humor.

I like to have fun and rib ya'all about myself! And all you 'friends' on here that have read my posts in the past KNOW I like to 'cut-up and carry-on' and make light of myself. .I WOULDN'T be building this tank and trying to do small details IF it was 'bad'.... now, it's a BEAUTIFUL DAY and I'm head'in to the garage!

Now... where'd I put my can... (JOKING!!! I have to take my Mom to the doctor for a checkup today so I ain't DRANK'IN!.. til I get back...) And remember: "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy!" Benjamin Franklin

Like your attitude Mike!!! And ditto Ben Franklin!!! Maybe I was a little harsh on Raptureboy? I just don't care for religiosity or cold religion. I know it shouldn't be that way. I have had the serendipity, an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident, of meeting some good people, who just happen to be Christians, that know who they are without judging others.

Mike you sound like my 1st sgt. in Germany, used to see him down town every
Friday night.
Went to the tax man today, the little receptionist had me take a seat to wait.
Then asked if I wanted some water?
I thought- do i look like a plant, said no thanks, water will rust your pipes.
She thought that was the funniest thing she ever heard.
I'm with you and Ben

Guys, I ordered some of the big 'C' shackles and stuff from 6th Scale Icons in Las Vegas... I've been talking with Mike (owner) that his 1/6 Panzer IV cables, shackles, etc. should be close enough to 1/8 scale and won't look too bad. He agreed and let jstrat121 (who's getting ready to get his RCA KT and show the build on the Australian site Hobby Havoc, check it out!) and me know he was going to pass word around to any other RCA builders that he's going to have a limited inventory available.

SOOO, I'll post some more pics when I get the 6th Scale stuff and get'em mounted on. Seems like build'in this KT will last a LONG time and I'M LOV'IN IT!

And THANKS EVERYBODY for the kind words on the figure paint job! Remember: I'M AN (self-proclamed) IDIOT when it comes to build R/C tanks and only been mess'in with'em since 1992, but I'm trying to do the best I can!
