Status: offline 		I finally put other projects on hold and made a pair of new benches...
The big bench is 50"x98 and the other is 25"x98".. On the big one I notched all my 4x4's for my 2x4 frame work, but didn't on the smaller one.. The top on the bigger bench is 3/4" BC ply followed by a sheet of 1/4" hardboard, then I topped it with some plank flooring I had leftover from a job. The smaller one is 1/2"bc ply with the same flooring on top. Then I wrapped both of them with 1x4 cedar and broke all the edges with a sanding block.. Pretty happy how they came out, the shop is starting to take shape. I plan on building a plane rack on the back wall next and adding some more lighting..

Status: offline 		Thanks for the kind words guys... I have a building bench top unit if you will, that I build on.. I made it from 2x4's that I ran over the jointer at work, then topped it with 3/4" MDF and used some double sided tape to hold down my celling tiles. It works great and comes off the bench when I am done framing, I have levelers I will put on the unit this weekend, had to use shims on the old table I was using..lol

I been Jacked and I see a Mod has joined in on the jacking, that's jacked up Jack..

I worked hard on these benches and I didn't have a bench to build it on, so it truly was a ground up build, is it so hard to say good job, or they look nice, you know, just a pat on the back. Is it to much to ask for!!! 

Ok continue with Jacking.

Your benches are all beautiful....too much work for me...
I've seen some beautiful models that were built on a coffee table.
If I built beautiful benches like you guys have I couldn't afford the planes.
The benches in this thread are really awsome.......

They do look great, and should last forever. The big one would be too wide for the middle of my work area but it looks like your area is big enough to handle it.

I been there, building on a small table and the planes came out great.. You might be surprised that I only have under $200 bucks for both.. I got all my wood from Menards and it was pretty cheap overall.. I still have some more things to build for the shop to get it all set up how I want, but the wife has me building 12'x4' planter boxes for the Veggie garden right now.... 

If anyone is interested in a list of the materials I used, let me know..

I too have a workshop that I am in the process of getting setup, and these tables look like they just might fit the bill of what I'm looking for. If you wouldn't mind sharing, I would love to see about adding these to my workshop as well. and I'm sure a few other folks would love to do the same too.......

The top/finish Is Vinyl Plank flooring, it looks great and is excellent for cutting on.. I was just cutting Monokote strips the other night on it, cut a lot of strips and I didn't have to change my blade...
I also added a new rolling cart to the shop, it holds all my hand tools I use a lot and all on my glues.. I will take a pic later...


I got all the wood from Menards, here is a rough list of what you need..

3- 4" X 4" X 8' post, this will give you 6 legs. They have some real nice straight pine ones, they say they are select grade. 

2X4's... Enough to build the top and the bottom shelf frame work, My top is on 12" centers and the bottom shelf is on 16" centers..

1X4 of cedar to wrap the frame work on top, mine I raised it flush with the top of the flooring..

Plywood
1- 4X8 sheet of 3/4" BC
1- 4X8 sheet of 1/2"
1- 4X8 sheet of 1/4" hardboard...

Screws.
Mine is all screws, not a drop of glue on in.. I did this in case I ever need to get it out of my basement, I can break it all down...

This is a rough list of what you need, will get some pics up for you over the weekend on the frame work..

You can put it down with a releasable adhesive, if one gets ugly, just heat it up, pull it off and put down a new one.. No need to re glue, that is why I topped my 3/4" ply with the hard board.

Status: offline 		The work bench I use is one I built well over 20 years ago. I used 2x^ for the frame, with 4X4's for the legs, stuck carriage botls with nuts and washers to level it off, and topped it off with 2 sheets of 3/4" particle board, and 1/4" hardboard. It is 50 x 72 and weighs at least 150#. It was a PITA to get down stairs, and when I had it in my garage the top got wet from a leaking roof, so I had to plane the top down smooth again. 

Makes a nice solid surface to work on, but need a better bench for framing and I like the ones the OP built.
