I just recently traded a touring car for a 46in. Prather deep vee that has never been built but the hardware kit it came with has a 3/16" strut which is too small for a Homelite or RCMK engine, so I need to buy a 1/4" strut but I have also been thinking about just going with a surface drive setup.  I know that the Prather hull was designed long before surface drives came out for rc boats, so does anyone have any knowledge of how a surface drive would work on a deep vee Prather?

Surface drive is going to be fine on that boat. Go ahead and do it and you should be able to squeeze out some extra performance as well (though the boat isn't a speed demon, it will benefit).

If you want to take a little cheaper route, go with the stand off bracket from WHH with the strut & rudder (strudder kit) so that way its only five holes in the transom (4 mounting screws & a new one for the shaft log). Maybe even consider building a turn fin. Other than that, enjoy it.

Just voicing opinions here ... and frankly think SURFACE drive a BAD ideal !!
Why ? because of the hull being a Shallow V design with heavy straked bottom. This makes hull a high lift light on it feet design than having a surface drive on will go like heck in a straight line BUT won't corner worth a dang !!
Prop walk will cause all kinds of handling troubles and the chine walk from a bigger prop will wobble the hull when going straight as well.
* There was a reason Prather ALWAYS set these boats up as sub surface piercing
Having your strut and prop JUST UNDER the keel gives the best of both worlds giving the hull a far better chance to get around corners at speed while still being fast down the straights.

Thanks for your input guys!  You both make good points, is there anyone out there that has actually tried a surface drive on a prather deep vee? I am sure someone has had to of tried it. I think I will just stick with what I know works.  I have a prather 31 inch deep vee that runs and handles very well with the stock prather strut, I doubt I will ever race any of my boats as there is no clubs around me that do race as far as I know so I think the sub surface drive will work.
