i'm a newbie looking to expand. I've been flying my NexStar for a couple years and have a chance to buy the Hangar 9 Miss America P-51 Mustang at a great price. I need an engine and can also buy a Saito FA-91S Ringed Engine. What are the pros/cons of a ringed engine over a non-ringed model?

Thanks in advance.

The best thing about the ringed engines is, You can replace the ring and bearings and the engine will be almost as good as new.
You just need to follow the break in procedures and use good fuel and You'll have many trouble free hours of flying.
There are a few things about 4strokes You need to learn, if You fly at a club I'm sure You'll be able to get some good advise.

Yep- parts are getting harder to find for glow engines with ABC piston / sleeve assy's becoming some of the more scarce items. Frank Bowman is still making rings for about engine out there.

Another +1 for the Bowman rings advantage.

Most of the four stroke engines are ringed.  There is a large gap between ends of the ring to allow blow by.  This blow by gets down into the crankcase.  The crankshaft beats that stuff into a mist and if lubircates the cam, cam bearings, and makes its way up the push rod tubes to the "top end" of the engine and lubricates the rocker arms.  Excess oil from the crankcase is ported over board on most of the engines via a nipple on the back of the engine or up front near the cam area,  Newer OS and Magnun engines have moved the excess oil port to the front of the engine and run a tube back to the intake manifold where the excess is sucked into the combustion cycle and is either consumed or exspelled over board via the exhausts system (a cleaner scheme of doing things).

And as said above rings can be replaced almost renewing the engine.

They are actually more tollerent to abuse than ABx engines.

As mentioned already, most four strokes are ringed. As for two strokes, the ABC or "ring less" are typically the most powerful like the high performance engines like Jett, Nelson. As for resistance to damage and longevity, you cant beat a ring engine. That's why you find 95% of all heli engines are ringed because they withstand heat and dust abuse so much better.

A Moki/Mark, a ring engine ran on non-nitro glow fuel fuel will probably out live most of us and just gets stronger with age.
