Status: offline 		It's remote enough where I live that if it sticks, its going to get a 21 gun solute.. I used the tooling coat from ACP.. I've used it on quite a few things and it seems to work very well.. It's really hard and brittle so if there are any voids in the subsequent layers of glass it will chip out.. Other than that, it works well.

Got 3 layers of 8oz cloth on it last night.. When I get home tonight I will apply the tooling dough to build up the thickness a little further. I will cap that with a layer of 6oz cloth and call it good.

Status: offline 		Here is the mold with the tooling dough in place.. I've also done an epoxy/tooling dough slurry to help smooth things out before the final layer of cloth.. This isn't a must but unless you are putting it down with your wife's rolling pin, it looks like the foot hills of the Rockies..

Status: offline 		Got up early this morning to pop the mold apart.. The flange area came apart nicely followed by the plug coming apart just as nicely.. The skins of the plug are more glued to the inside of the mold than the foam core they were originally glued to.. That's right, it's all junk.. Hundreds of dollars and countless hours and I haven't got a f'ing thing to show for it.. Sorry to everyone who wasted their time following this thread.

I'm not sure what happened just yet.. It was waxed numerous times and I PVA'd what I thought would be the difficult areas and even some of those stuck.. I may try and clean it up but I'm guessing that's a waste of time..

Status: offline 		Thanks Scott.. The parting board is fine, it's sitting on the workbench in the garage.. However, I may have been a little hasty with my conclusion.. I was able to clean up the top half of the mold and it looks usable, and actually turned out pretty good.. The bottom half is worse off but I may be able to make use of it if I can get it cleaned up. The thing I can't figure out is that I can see the wax under the paint from the plug when I was scraping it off with a old credit card.. I'm still not sure why it stuck so bad..

I may try and dissolve the paint with some lacquer or acetone.. It shouldn't hurt the mold surface other than stripping any of the wax that's left on there.. When I get home from work tonight I'll try that on a small area. Even if I can get it fixed up it's going to take a while to get it ready for use..

Status: online 		Well, the wax won't stop the reactivity of the resin to the parts, but the PVA absolutely should have. The only times I have stuck a part was when I used some other wax than Part-All #2, or my PVA barrier was too thin or had voids. I like Part-All products if I am doing wax & PVA; I have has mixed results with TR, McGuire's and other products. Not that they are bad products, I just have more consistent results with the Rexco Part-All system.

I am using Freekote FMS & 770NC this time on my plugs for the molds, so I won't be showing live pictures till I am done!!

Sounds like a new wing and maybe use the first mold half for the new parting board. You should be OK either way since you still have the parting boards. Parting boards are the WORST to build! [>:]

Status: offline 		I was used Part-All on this then some Flex 2.0 release agent I've been using on my fuse layups.. It worked really well on that, not sure what the issue was here.. I think I can make it work, at least well enough to get a plug done.

Status: offline 		Well, it's final.. I guess I'm going to find someone with a CNC to cut some molds.. The bottom half of the wing mold is unrepairable.. Especially now.. I had to yell at my dog for trying to retrieve it before I was finished with it.. Yes, I'm a yankee redneck.. I'm still not sure what happened to cause the issues.. Possibly the paint wasn't cured and the solvents broke down the wax.. I guess we'll never know.

Status: online 		Lee, if you can find a CNC cutter for a reasonable cost, let me know. I have a few files I would like to have a master CNC'ed too. I am assuming you are cutting the positive mold form, and pulling the production molds off of them, correct?

Status: offline 		First of all Gary, I'm a very good shot, it's just that the mold didn't do much with the 9mm, even with 13 rounds thru it.. That's why the 12 gauge came out

Scott, if I have them CNC cut I would have the female cut.. No more mold making for me, well, not wings at least..Probably...maybe..

Let me win Randy? You guys called me a cut on #3 every heat last Saturday!! Must have been my caller

Status: offline 		Lee, sorry to see but you will probably be happier in the end as the second one is always better.

I want to through my guess out as to what happened, when making the mold and building thickness it is real easy to get it hot inside and melt the wax causing it to stick. This is even worse if PVA isnt thick enough. Not that big of deal when laying up parts as they are thin and dont exotherm to much. ( my first one ended up out in the street ) Look at some semi permanent releases such as Frecote etc. If you build the mold for it from the begining the parts just fall out!
