light white smoke with entrained oil is normal for glow engines. If you're seeing droplets, your engine is probably tuned very rich. Do a search on tuning here on RC universe or any other search engine. There are hundreds if not thousands of pages on tuning 2 stroke engines, and they all say the same thing.

Dockrat tuning and operation of a modern two stroke glow engine is not intuitive or is it like a lawn care engine. Actually they are Semi-diesels. If you are moving from electric RC aircraft to glow power for the first time it actually will benefit your chances for success if you network with experianced glow flyers to mentor you.

Trying to get only help from these kinds of forums without hands on mentoring is often futile. Only just a few days ago in this beginners forum I beleve a fellows impatience and refusal to find a mentor may have resulted in his damaging his engine not to mention all the frustration.

The TT .40/.46 Pro is a great engine and yes yours is running rich after a first start as it should and does require further adjustments of the main needle and then possible adjustment of the mid range needle which in turn requires final adjustment back on the main needle.

At the very least do a good read of the manufacturers instruction sheet.

John

The good news is that that engine is easy to tune and is very reliable assuming your tank is set up right and everything is sealed up like it's supposed to be. IMO, TT is the best value in engines on the market.

You can put your zip code in the search box at http://www.modelaircraft.org/clubsearch.aspx to find a list of clubs in your area. Make contact (phone is often better than email) and arrange to meet with a member who can help you with tuning.

It will be well worth the time to do this.

Dockrat, I'm sorry but I can't stand it...... Your Thunder Tiger power unit is not a "gas motor". It dosen't burn GAS, it burns "glow fuel". It isn't a "motor", it's a 2 stroke internal combustion "engine". If your airplane was electric powered, then it would have a "motor" in it. It's also not "nitro" powered..... That term is used by people who race RC model cars which burn "glow fuel". Full scale auto racing (which I did for 40 years) is also misnamed as "motorsports" because they have an internal combustion engine, not a Motor!!! (unless your racing a Chevy Volt or a Nissan Leaf) LOL!!!! Sorry for my rant, but the English language must be protected. Hope the advice others gave on your Thunder Tiger pro 46 gets it running right. I also have a TT 46 pro and they are great little motors......errrr I mean great little ENGINES.

He, he

Larry its a losing battle brought on with the introduction of RC cars. For example, it fasinates me how one can build an arf. Heck I don,t think I ever built one, I always just assembled them. I have had many radio systems but they all had transmitters, never seen one with a remote! Well one that would change the channel on my TV.

Good points John. I also have never built an ARF, however I did rebuild one that I crashed last year. I shouldn't have started on the "gas motor" thing but it was like fingernails on a chaulkboard.....I just couldn't stand it!!

Dockrat,

First the TT .46 is a glow engine, not a gas engine, and it's running very rich.

Is the engine new, or already broken in? If it's new, then follow the break-in instructions in the manual before you try to lean it out or you'll burn it up really quick. If you don't have them, let us know and somebody will be able to get you that information.

If it's already broken in, then you'll need to lean the high-speed needle to peak the engine, then back it off about 400 RPM, or 3 or 4 clicks rich. Next you'll probably have to set the low-speed needle to the engine transitions to high-speed without either bogging down or quitting. It doesn't take long to do this, but take your time and work in very small adjustments (1/16 to 1/8 of a turn at a time when your close) to really fine tune the engine.

Also make sure you run a good fuel with at lest 18% oil content. I prefer a castor/synthetic mix, and have used Morgans Omega for years and never had a issue (I did run some Magnum when I couldn't get the Omega, and burned up 3 engines with it due to a very low oil content).

Like has been said, TT engines are a very good value. I have a couple each of the TT .46 Pro, TT .61 Pro, and one TT .40 Pro. All great running engines that will start on the first or second flip (no electric starter required).

Some times this RCU is really entertaining, some of the quotes are a blast. Lets see, we got gas motors every where some nitro ones also. I don't know what it is about those that don't even know what is in there hand, shamefull really.

We have guys telling others how to mount their nitro and gas motors, how can you belive anyone that does'nt know what it's called or what makes it work. I just don't get it.

What about those who run plain methanol (FAI 0%) without nitro in their TT .46?

If you ain't fillin up at a gas station and spinnin a 16" or larger prop with a spark ignition system you ain't flyin gas.

The other choices are glow or electric.

"Nitro" is what kids burn in toy cars.

Right. Like the "outboard engines" you see on boats or the "enginecycles" that the Hell's Angels zoom around on.

Heh....

One of my pet peeves is "its" pronounced incorrectly as "ists".
