I first saw this project 3 years ago, in fact talking to Archie and Gary who dreamt up the idea its been a few weeks over 3 years since they started. The aeroplane is produced using a special plywood that can be formed. the original idea was to use 2 x P-200 turbines, down a common split tube, but AMT's Titan became available, so they switched the power to that. The model is totally scratch built and I cannot stress how impressive it is! At a little less than 3.5m span and weighing 175lb dry (79kg!) its a monster. Fuel is 11 ltrs and radio a Futaba MZ14 through a Powerbox Royal. The model features its own air reservoir and air pump and has six 30KG servos ganged for redundancy on the tail plane alone! The U/C is scratch built also with industrial struts...driven by Jet Tronic valves!
In the UK the model had to go through various checks and now a total of 2 hours flight testing as its weight brings it into a special class.
Archie and Gary have had help from plenty of people and as you can guess this sort of model represents a huge investment in time and money, so I was honoured to be asked to do the test flights. There were plenty of unknowns on this model and other than a change of aileron set position, I changed very little during the final set up. Everything was double checked by numerous people and I'm sure Archie would agree without the help of John Palmer the project would not have been so easy. The only issue we couldn't solve yesterday was with a brake unit that caused a loss of pressure, ultimately allowing it to run onto the grass and find a rabbit hole which caused a little undercarriage and fuse damage, even though it had slowed quite a bit by then.

I really didn't know what to expect approaching the first flight, but I had planned out various things, so that I could use this first flight to explore some limits and ultimately get it back on the ground in one piece. The mass is something to manage! and everything happens in slow motion, even a slight wing drop on landing was easily checked. We have a few ideas before the next flights and I know we can improve the set up flown yesterday.

Its not about me...its about what they have achieved. A lot has been learnt about Scale single turbines at this size and we have a couple of ideas to improve this project before I fly it again. The guys have done a truly amazing job.

Superb achievement guys - fantastic, and glad you were confident enough to put trust in the GBRJET CAT.................. many more safe flights ahead and look forward to seeing this at some UK shows this year.

Video of Take off (phone i am afraid but better than nothing).
Takeoff was down wind...very little on the day, Dave chose this direction for safety.
Landing into wind.

Yep...big is the word! The tanks worked well, no issues so far-don't want a flame out on this one!! We increased the tubing sizes to allow for the multi tank set up.

A lot more flying needs doing before we think about flying it at a show.

Dave
