This is a scan of a Popular Mechanics article from 1912 . It was the latest stunt performed by a famous French stuntman (Legagneux) . It would be an interesting challenge at an r/c fun fly event . .... D.J.

D.J.

Am I seeing that scan correctly? It looks like they are portraying him flying backwards on the left-to-right legs. Of course, PM probably didn't know front to back of the aircraft at the time anyway.

Interesting,

Bedford

You can get away with a lot when you're flying a kite

This must have been a very interesting time in flight history . The Dirigible was still a viable means of air transport and the newest shapes of planes at the Paris air show were basically sticks covered with cloth .  ... D.J.

I'm guessing from all of the reinforcing wires on the wing structures they could not afford titanium at the time.

Is is likely that there was enough of a headwind so that the airplane could fly slowly-enough that it would drift backwards in relation to the ground? That would give a path like that without the airplane actually flying backwards.

I never flew a model from that era but they resemble a box kite so perhaps they flew/ floated like one.

I have a hard enough time flying forward.
