Guys remember there are thousands of people that do the delivery and pickup, then there are less that do the loading and unloading at the hub. The distribution is mainly automated so it usually won't get damaged in the distribution. (5% as nothing is impossible)
It is either the loader/unloader (85% chance it is happening here) or with the delivery personal (10%)
I usually have UPS deliver my boxes (1 out of 10), FEDEX and USPS the other times. It depends if I want it in a reasonable time or 2 weeks. I never have to sign for my packages when it is UPS.
But my UPS guy gets a Thank You note everytime I am expecting a package and about every 5th box a $10 or $20 bill, as it is worth that to me.
My guy will place my door mat on top of the box or they will move the flower pot to help cover it. You can see my door from the street but there isn't a flashing neon sign. I haven't had any issues so far.
But treat your delivery people like they treat you. It is their job to get the package there in a acceptable fashion. Try and make it worth the extra trouble if you can.

I got an ARF in the mail yesterday that was sent FedEx. Box was banged up and corners were caved in but thankfully Top Flite packs their boxes well enough to withstand all but the most vicious of handling. I prefer UPS since they tend to deliver to me on time more often than the USPS or FedEx(package was slated to arrive the day before). I live in a very small town so all three of the carriers seem to give a rat's behind a lot more than my experiences with other, more populated areas.

Does'nt matter who you use sooner or later you will get something smashed. My ups driver leaves packages in the middle of my driveway sometimes, because he does not want to drive down and turn around(it's 700' long) even on rainy days I work for a large retailer in logistics and when the ups guy comes with a trailer load of mech it's all over the place and they just start throwing it out onto the dock. It's all a matter of time vs $, volume vs lost merch. If we lose 2% of the volume we handle we are golden. The problem with the usps is it's run by the govt.

I am so impressed that so many other people also hold contempt for the USPS; have you ever noticed that when you are forced to make that horrendous visit to the Post Office, you are confronted by a Line Up, and there are only 1 or 2 Postal Slugs working the counter, yet there are several other Postal Slugs walking aimlessly in the background, do they not see that the counter is busy, Oh I forgot, it’s not their job; and then while you are waiting for an eternity, you see another Postal Slug open another window and you think, hey the USPS is finally operating like a real business and is actually concerned with proper Customer service and is going to put another Postal Slug to work the counter to help with the back log of Customers who are paying their wages; but OH NO; that additional Postal Slug isn’t going to work the counter to help with the lineup, that Slug is there to relieve one of the other Postal Slugs so they can go to lunch; what a joke. I guarantee, that many of the folks in the line, are not getting lunch that day, because they are wasting their Lunch Break at the frigging Post Office waiting on the Postal Slugs!

Actually, I'm amazed that more packages are NOT busted up like the OP's. In the hundreds of millions of packages, letters and books shipped by our postal system. Don't get me wrong, I've had my share of lost, mutilated and crushed packages but in the grand scheme of things the USPS does it's job at a reasonable price for the distance it travels.

Have you every tried to send a letter from third world country?

Actually, even though I object to the slipshod direction the USPS is going, I have had only two problems with them, both stemming from packages thay absolutely insist they delivered but I never received. These guys and gals must have phenominal memories to be able to recall exactly how many packages were delivered to any one address on any given day. Both times I had problems, the route drivers insisted that very package was delivered even though I never received it. No chance it went to a wrong address or was otherwise lost somehow. They delivered it and there is absolutely nothing I, as the intended reciepent, can do. That is the end of it as fars as USPS is concerned. And, folks, that is a very frustrating feeling.

The only thing USPS has going for it is that it's the cheapest option. I haven't had trouble with priority mail, but have had plenty of grief with parcel post and first class shipping of small items. My only troubles with receiving things are that my delivery guy thinks that "signature required" means to leave the little orange paper telling me I have to go pick up my package instead of knocking on the door to see if anyone is home. I usually am, and the counter slugs swear that he always knocks. To their defense though, they have one of the crappiest jobs around. No one they deal with is in a good mood and people complain all day. It's probably worse than working at the DMV.

I solved the same problem by phoning the post office and asking them to deliver the package again to my door the next day. Now the postman rings "really hard" because he knows he will have to come back the next day if he doesn't deliver

BTW, senior (USPS) counter help can make up to $70K a year... for doing little more than what a check out person does at Walmart.

While I agree that's too much money, they do have to do quite a bit more then a check out person at Walmart. They have to learn a lot of regulations and requirements. My experience with counter help has always been make sure you have everything correct and ready to go and they will be helpful. If I had to explain to 80% of the people that come in what they did wrong packaging their item all day I would be cranky too.

I agree grimbeaver. It drives me nutty to stand in line at the Post Office and wait and wait and wait while the person behind the counter has to walk an adult though how to pack and mail a package because that customer has no idea what they are doing. If you're over 12, you should know how to put something in a box, tape it closed with an appropriate amount of tape and legibly write a couple of addresses on it. It boggles my mind that people can't comprehend this simple process and I don't have to deal with it for 8 hours a day...

I worked at a post office and for one did see the word fragile when it got to me and treated it as such! But by no means putting it on there did it mean it would escape the same fate as your box, The word seems to go un-noticed by so many handlers before me! So sorry that happened!!

Maybe I've been lucky, but I haven't had a single issue with USPS, FedEx, or UPS after buying thousands of dollars worth of RC stuff. Sure, I've had to wait in line for a few minutes (on Saturday's, the only day I'm off work to mail stuff), and their authorization/validation policy is way too lax, but by in large the folks helping me have been customer service oriented and knowledgable.

My letter carriers have varied lately after my regular I called Joe-hamburber (Marine in Vietnam) retired. They're mostly Desert Storm vets, and are helpful whenever I need something. Sure they don't look like Dudly Do-right, but who cares? I may not want that particular vet in the left seat of my 777, but am happy that they're getting paid well for the mundane job they perform, a job I would HATE.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but lighten up Francis.... Jeezzzzz...

I guess the few of you who have add issues deserve the right to complain and vent. I've never had an issue with USPS, so had to mention it and will be on my way.

Did lightning just strike twice or does somebody have it out for me? Yes the box I received last week was broken in two but even as I looked at the mangled remains I knew that stuff like this happens. The vendor was kind enough to send me replacement parts for everything that was broken and missing, these are specialty items that are not available locally. He got them here in a hurry too. So I get home today and find the replacement box on my doorstep.

Holy ****, this one is broken in two again!!!!! Okay, a box gets damaged once in a while, it happens (although I was surprised by what a good job they did of it). But what are the odds that the replacement box gets broken in the same fashion? This time they didn't even have the courtesy to tape it closed. This is an official Post Office shipping tube and two times out of two they snap it in half. Didn't damage it, didn't crush it, didn't dent it, they snapped it in two! You would think that if they offer this as the preferred shipping container they would have the ability to handle it properly.

I'm truly amazed.

Dave

Man you got the worse luck, again it all boils down to the fact that these overpaid 'Postal Slugs' don't give a crap about providing good service, theres no incentive to do the right thing and ensure packages like yours are not damaged, their attitude is that it's someone else's problem, they do not ahere to the notion 'The customer is always right', they replace that with 'Who cares about the Customer, as long as I get my pay', proper customer relations and respect is like a foreign language to them; I can't wait till they start laying off some of these worthless Postal Slugs and shut down some of their branches.

Well, I figured the quotes around that comment would kind of indicate that I was quoting something.. that comment was BEGGING for me to add to it and as it turned out, it wasn't meant to be a Stripes reference!?.. C'mon, I'm 29 and even I picked up on that classic line! oh well, all in good fun fellas!

And he probably reads RCU on our Dollar while ‘On the Clock’, noticed I said ‘On the Clock’ instead of while ‘At Work’, because after-all, we all know these useless and pathetic Postal Slugs don’t actually work, they occupy space at the Post Office and Draw a Paycheck.

You know what the sad part is about the excellent possibility of Laying off a bunch of these useless and sorry Postal Slugs will be, is that the ones getting the Axe will not be the High Seniority Postal Slugs that give the worst Service of all and have been at their Pathetic existence at the Post Office longer; but it will be the Younger Slugs with lower seniority that actually give good service and may give a crap about their pathetic Jobs, will get the Axe first; it seems to me, they need to give the Axe to any Postal Slugs that have been there longer than 2 weeks, because that’s about how long it takes for them to hate their pitiful existence at the Post Office, develop the ‘I don’t Give a Crap Attitude’ and develop into the sorry Postal Slugs that they are destined to be.

I keep this up, I'm likely to go Postal on the Postal Slugs.

I just had an interesting trip to the Post Office. I brought the box in and explained that it was the second one in a week that was broken. The surprising part was the guy actually feigned interest, he didn't ask any smart a** questions and didn't make any stupid comments. He was actually helpful and expressed concern about the rate of damaged packages being delivered. He said he would talk with the carrier to see if they realized they were delivering damaged boxes (Did you notice it folded in two when you picked it up?) and the really surprising part was that he would file a notice that would go out to package handlers through out the system about handling of these triangular boxes. He suspects that they are being improperly loaded on the plane.

Much better experience than "If it's not marked fragile it should be fine."

Dave
