Don't babysit, it is better to be active and make short runs.

It should give you about 3500-10500 rpm on a 9x4 prop when you're done, if I remember correctly.

Plain bearing, or single or double ball bearings? I have a plain bearing one that I broke in on a RevUp 8 1/2 x 4, using short rich runs and gradually leaning, trying to follow the advise on the diesel combat site. I flew it a few times, but never tached it. It didn't idle well, which turned out to be a misaligned spray bar. I fixed that, but haven't had a plane for it since then.

I'll be interested in how it does for you.

Jim

A friend, now deceased, flew one of the ball bearing PAW 09's on CL sport stunt airplanes. I don't know what prop he was running, but it performed very close to a TD 09 in terms of moving the airplane right along.

March, 1960 review of the PAW 1.49 gives peak HP of .176 at 17,000 RPM. 7 x 3 or 6 x 4 would get it there in the air. If I had one, I would run a Cox 7 x 3.5. For comparison a Cox Medallion 09 puts out .162 HP at 16,500 on 10% nitro fuel. (Aeromodeller, May 1963) and a TD 09 puts out .235 HP at 19,000 on 30% nitro fuel. I run my TD's on 10% nitro and release them at around 15,000 RPM on a Cox 7 x 3.5. That is what I am comparing my friend's PAW performance to.

I've got a few of them that I fly in CL sport/stunt models. I use either a 7x4 or 8x4 on them - surprisingly it doesn't have a huge effect on how the model flies. From memory you could expect mid-14000s with an MA GF3 7x4. I particularly like the old straight-venturi ones, which are a bit lighter.

I have only run the later RC engines and the MkII is more powerful than the MkI.
Prop selection does depend on the plane, but 8x4-9x4 props fits well in regular RC sports applications.

Martin, you'll enjoy running that gem, one of my favourites! All my 3 are MKII TBR, 2 of them CL.

The first diesel I ever started was a plain bearing vertical intake PAW .09. I was 13.

Beautiful engine. It belonged to a neighbour who also flew C/L and I was most envious of it. It powered his Aeroflyte Husky with authority.

Aeroflyte Husky, now that rings a bell. But can't quite envisage what it looked like though ....................

I think I've got a copy of the plans at home somewhere, although I've never seen the actual model. It looks rather small for a good .09 - I guess it was designed with something mild like an OS Pet 099 in mind. A PAW 09 will fly something like an Akromaster or Jr Flitestreak (nominally .15-sized) quite nicely.

Check it out here boys.

http://www.vicstunt.com/History/Aeroflyte/Aeroflyte-02-Large.htm

A lovely little model. With the PAW mounted inverted up front it looked great, and did not exactly struggle to get into the air.

Ah Derek that brings back memories!

I had the Aeroflyte 'Wildcat,'  'Spitfire' and a 'Taipan Trainer' when I was learning to fly, along with a Mercury Monarch.

Thanks for posting that priceless piece of memorabilia!

Yes, thanks Fiery, it's great to see one of those old Aeroflyte catalogs again.

I wonder if anyone ever tried flying one of those 54" Avengers with only a .19 in it?

Just ordered the plans for the Aero-Flyte 'Typhoon' and 'Husky'. I was amazed you can still get them.

My small 1.5 and 2.5 ccm C/L diesels will find a home at last.

The Aeroflyte Husky plan scanned to pdf should be attached.
