I also wanted to throw my "hat in the ring" with a vote for the Balsa USA fleet - I was also at the Dawn Patrol in Dayton, and couldn't help but notice how all of the Balsa USA birds were generally very well behaved in the almost continuous crosswind we had all weekend.

In fact, I was so impressed that one of the DR1's followed me home, and I decided to keep it!

I don't know the specs, but it looked 1/4 scale to me.

Hi, Jim . . .

Yep, That was me, flying Doug Cox's Nieuport 28. That was without a doubt one of the most fun things I've done in a long time. I'm hoping to have some pictures back tonight of the event, but I know we've got at least one real good shot of the two Nieuports in formation - the photo looks very realistic!

I had a great time at Dawn Patrol and I look forward to seeing you guys in 2005. We can try some more formation flying and fake dogfighting. Hopefully we won't have the 90 degree crosswind.

It is listed on their website, balsausa.com as 1/4 scale but no pictures as yet.

quote:

If you are looking at the smaller scale war birds go to www.proctorenterprises and look at their VK line of kits which are the Nieuport 17, Fokker Dr 1, Sopwith Camel and Sopwith 1 and 1/2 Strutter. They are 1/6th scale with the Camel having a 56 inch wingspan. My Nieuport will fit in the back of my small blaser or my pickup assembled along with another assembled stearman. The Nieuport flys nice and I am building the Camel because I have been told it flys the best of the bunch

I have a VK/Proctor Camel and it DOES fly very well...it is so easy to fly that it was my everyday flier for about two years...Great ground handling on grass....It's not a quick build but the time spent building is well worth it. It's small enough to leave assembled and carry in most cars or a pickup. Saito 56 would be perfect, I used a .50......

It's hanging from the ceiling now, waiting for recovering.

If you are interested in a Nieuport 17 short kit with plans and lazer cut wood check with Mike Bealmear. His site is listed above. He and some other WWI types are listed in the Dawn Patrol website. I've been in touch with Mike and he's a very avid WWI modeler and beside that he's a nice guy and very helpful.

I was all set to do the deed, a FunAero 60" SE5a (~$190) with a Saito FA72 (~$230) but then I came across another combination. What about a BalsaUSA 1/4 Pup ($190) with a Zenoah G26 ($300).

Seems like more plane and more motor for just a bit more cash. No pucker factor for me. How does BUSA Pup fly?

The BUSA Pup with G26 would be a great combo. I think you'd be very happy with it. The G26 is more power than it needs but you can always throttle back. I've seen lots of BUSA Pups fly with engines from G23s and weedie conversions, to big 4-strokes. They all fly well. I prefer gas myself- more economical, more reliable, etc.

Eindeckerpilot is a good source for anything WWI. Check his e-mail above. Mike Bealmear is a nice guy and belongs to a group called the Dawn Patrol which has a website. These people are mission oriented and fly WWI aircraft so they actually do the things that these planes were intended to do back in 1914-18.
