Our field has been the target of vandelism !!!!!!!! In the last 2 years our club has spent allmost 2k dollars for repairs to the mower,locks,signs....... then today i go out to the field to find 3 heavy duty locks are gone allong with about 4 cases of pop out of the fridge and 2 bottles of propane for the gas grill....
I am thinking of putting up some video cameras or somthing. Realllllllyyyyyyyyyy getting tired of repairing stuff instead of flying.
Any suggestions as to what to do in general or what kind of cameras actually work ??? I got a trail cam but 90% of the pictures are pure white !!! getting to my wits end.

got to Bass Pro Shop or Academy and buy a wild game camera... they are relatively cheap and effective http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_29363_-1?Ntt=camera&Ntk=All

Get a good night lite camera or two as mentioned above, get some dummy cameras with an led on, and get some signs to post on the buildings. Put some motion lights if you have power.
It's probably the same group of kids or stupid adults and they probably hit it around the same time on the same day. If you can narrow it down and have some members camp out there you might just catch them.
Stuff like this really burns me up !

Just take heed of the fact that people breaking into locked buildings are scumbag low life pieces of **** and would probablly think nothing of escalating their crimes to physical violence if confronted by a regular citizen . We pay the Police to deal with jerks such as these thieves , and unless your willing to risk your health or financial well being , best to leave it to them ......

Suppose you DO catch the thief "in the act" , , and you rightfully beat the Hell outta him . Is the club gonna defend you from the inevitable law suit the slimeball thief is gonna file ???

Best to leave the law enforcement to the pros .........

Wouldn't want to beat them , just hold them at gunpoint and wait for the police. True you have to weigh the situation and the club members doing this have to have the stomach for it and a level head.
Problem with letting the police handle it is they are usually a day late with crimes like this.
No one asked but did you call the police and did they dust for finger prints, tracks, etc..?
We had some drug addicts breaking into buildings stealing copper pipe, etc... and they broke into our flying field buildings but didn't steal anything either because they couldn't see it or it was of no value to them. Police dusted for prints, etc, etc......and nothing. They hit one more building and a few weeks later the morons took some large brass valves they stole to a local scrap yard, the scrap yard had the list called the cops and they were caught. Of course nothing will ever come of them paying to repair or replace the damaged buildings and stolen items. They own nothing of value and the court will slap them on the wrist and spend a year or so in jail. Best to try and thwart them or catch them in the act in my opinion.
Classic part was while moron #1 was out on bail he was caught breaking into a mini-mart. Drugs make you do stupid things.

Not to be a smart a but have you considered not leaving things there for them to steal,, I mean who risks jail for les than $100 worth of Pop and Propane?? and the Vandalism sounds like Kids to me.

You must have power since you have a fridge,, Contact a local security guy for a quote and options,, it's not as expensive as it used to be for a decent camera system, You can even get them with webcam up links so you can monitor your field from anywhere with a computer or smart phone. If you want to continue to keep goodies there it might be worth the trouble and cost.

good luck

If you don't have internet there you can look into a cell phone security camera. I was looking at these to use as a makeshift weather station for the field (call into the camera and view the sock or weather station dial).
These use a cellphone sim card and can be set to call you when motion is sensed and record it too.

If they are stealing things like soda pop try opening a few and fill it with salt water then reseal it. If you add a little brown food coloring they will never touch it again I guarantee it.

I'm guessing that you don't have commercial power or internet at the site. This is the situation that we've had at one of my flying sites.

We've had problems with illegal dumpers, as well as some light vandalism at our site. I have a solar powered weather station that reports via APRS using ham radio at my flying site. The station has been vandalized twice over the last 3 years.

Now, hold on to your hats everyone.....here's all we did....and it seemed to have stopped the issues.
I bought a couple of fake security cameras. They have a blinking led, and it fooled most of the members in the club. Mounted up high, it's almost impossible to tell. I have coax running out of the camera and into the weather-proof box that holds the electronics for the weather station.

Now that I've posted this info, I'm sure my station will be vandalized later tonight.

Whoops, I've just re-read your post, and with a fridge, I guess you do have commercial power.

Why not invest in a digital DVR camera system and a motion sensor flood light? This should deter most people.

Got a motion flood light and 2 more small motion sensing cams coming. Would like to catch them so they could mow the 18 acres with push mowers !!!!!
"will never happen in todays environment" Allthough a good beating would make me feel allllllooooootttttttttttt better and there's no doubt i could "get er done". I wouldn't do that either as mentioned they would probably sue me or the club and win. The sheriff was called last year when they drove our tractor with 10' woods mower into the river after flattening alll the tires and tearing out wires and filling everything with sand. They took some pictures, said dusting for prints was pointless, and more or less said "well at least nobody got hurt"........... I and 3 other club members got the tractor going again after about a week and about 1300.00 $ for allllllll the oils, filters, gaskets, new dash..... anyway..... you get the idea. but hay "nobody got hurt" We called the sheriffs office 4 times in the following 2 months and they finally told us that they mainly just gather the info and if we wanted to pursue it we would need to hire a pi. bs !!!!!!!!!! thats why i didn't call them this time.. was just looking for some ideas or cams that were worth the $ Oh did i mention that our club only has 22 members... I mention this just to put into perspective what our bank account looks like
Thanks for the ideas and replies guys.
Club president John.

Nothing burns me up more than being victimized by a thief. Need to get a system that will record and notify you when it's triggered so you can ping in and watch and listen . I believe some even have voice-in so you can talk to them !.......maybe they'll just laugh at you.
As in most other places the local police are either worthless and/or just don't want to put the time in. Maybe you could get one to join the club?

Doesn't matter. If you get cameras, they will steal them too.

File stolen property reports with your local police dept. After doing that, you can request that an officer drive past your flying field during his night shift.

We handle theft calls for a huge company that provides cabling for most all internet providers with 2500 sites across the US.  I can tell you, with razor ribbon, multi-strand barbed wire,  8' commercial grade metal fencing, 3/8" chains and locks around our compounds, the only thing all that investment does is keep the honest people out.  We have motion senser lights and security cameras which they either shoot out or have sling shots and rocks to knock out.  If they can reach them with poles, bats, pipes, they'll beat them beyond usefullness.
They steal our AC units, lightning supression systems, diesel fuel from backup generators and I have a location which they stole the entire chain link fence!  We have huge spools of fiber optic cable that is worth tons of money but they can't re-sell to the scrap dealers yet they still break in.  We stick raw ends of if through the fence so they can do the "touchy feely" thing yet they still break in.
The current economy and the recyclers that turn a blind eye to buying stolen metals is killing us.  The local authorities (nation wide) won't spend time to try and catch them or even follow leads when we turn in license plates and descriptions.
If you even attempt to deter them via physical harm you will be liable for any injury you cause through pre-meditated cause.  You can't shoot them or trap them or poison them without being sued (and probably lose) so don't even think about trying any bait and trap antics.  The law allows for protection of one's "personal" property, NOT property at your field.
Your best bet is to keep all valuables of site.  Put up high wattage lights and talk to your local police/sheriffs departments and see if they will make more rounds at your site.  You can try camera equipment but they will probably steal those as well.
This is 2012.  Nothing is safe, secure or locked up well enough to prevent theft as horrible as that sounds, it's reality.

The key to stopping it is to catch the offenders. Put in hidden cameras and motion detecting lights. If you can get some photos, then the police have something to work with.

Years ago back in the USA my neighborhood was plagued with auto vandalism and stereo theft. My car got broken into so I put in a wireless alarm. A month later, it went off at midnight and I ended up pepper spraying two kids in my car. They had come in separate vehicles and both had evidence from dozens of other crimes. The break-ins stopped. The cops let me talk to the boys, both 18 and one of them had the nerve to ask me why I pepper sprayed them. I told them it was because my handgun was in the safe. They were both convicted.

Agree with not doing anything to harm the scum bags as bad as you want too. It will only get yourselves in trouble.

I like the idea of the game cameras especially if they can be hidden and also NOT STOLEN!
It would be better to have them caught and prosecuted than just sacred off.

My club has a 40' steel shipping container with those round hidden locks that are next to impossible to defeat.
It would be far easier to get a Oxy torch and cut a hole in the container than go thru the door.

A couple of claymores, well placed, will solve this problem.

Hi

Guys , guys ,............................... commen sence is dead in this day and age . If you confront the person or persons doing this , and try to teach them a lesson . Youre the one,s that are going to get the lesson , I,d find out where they live and vandelize there property ( NOT ), harrase the kids , " AT THERE HOME " And please do invite the authorities , no trespassing . Even catching them in the act means absolutly , " NOTHING " , they get a slap on the hand , and only want revenge back . Hazle there life , to no end . No violence . And actioning the parents , don,t hold youre breath , for gods sake you,ll dye trying . What I,m saying is there,s not much to do with these , " nothing else to do kids "

Good luck with youre problem guys

Michel

I think we are going the stealth camera route. if we plant enough of them in different locals hopefully they won't find them all !!! Once armed with pictures Then if it's kids...... 16 or less ....... I may have to have a talk with mom and dad. if they are older or if mom or dad aren't interusted in some kind of retrabution then we will just let the local pd handle it. My youngest is still in school so i can get my hands on a school annual !!
Allways with discretion. I do like the clamore idea though easier than digging a pit with rusty nails sticking up through a board in the bottom. Then just give the er my number ! "Kidding"

It sounds crazy but one of the best things to do is make a police report. For all you know these are the same people vandalizing throughout the town. Once it is on file then you can try and set up the cameras and such. But, from what you are telling us they will probably steal them too. I know for a fact through there is a camera system out there that when you trip the sensors it goes directly to your cell phone. I know this because a collegue of mine had it installed at his house because of a string of thefts in his area. Just do something instead of nothing though. Get the police involved no matter how worthless you think they may be. All of these thefts and strings of vandalism must add up.

Sorry jonhfly... I didnt read completely about how the sheriff was notified so many times. If you get the cameras, you may be able to get some car plates or something else which would make it more entising for the authorities to do something.
