Im going to have to resize my pictures because they are too large. But, I finally got the "A" Main race loaded on you tube. You can see some of the cuts at the beginning of the race. This is all unedited so if you dont want to wait around after the end of the race (about 4:30), skip the video over to about the 7 minute mark. At the very end, Tim Batt reads out the results.

I have posted links to the videos on the Club 40 Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/club40racing and I made John McGowan an Admin for the page so John, you can creat photo albums. If you have any trouble, let me know. It is very easy to upload a WHOLE batch of photos in one shot.

David, I will make you an admin also if are on or get on Facebook.

You guys did a GREAT job of covering the race. This is the kind of coverage that really makes it inspiring for people to see what is going on and how much fun is being had. I know I'm more inclined to try to make one or more of your races now. Even with the price of gas and the drive, I want to come race!!! At the minimum I want to race locally again.

This kind of coverage also helps with potentially getting some sponsorship.

Thanks for sharing and your efforts.

Ok folks,
I will now try and describe all the happenings of yesterday's race at Birmingham RC

As most of us know, a race just doesnt happen on its own. It takes a coordinated effort of willing people that want to make an event a success. Yesterday we had a group of folks that volunteered to do just that, made the event a success! Without their help and support yesterday, the race could not have been a good day.

I want to personally give a HUGE THANK YOU to the volunteers from yesterday's race.....
Jim and David Georgeson who went out and purchased all the food and then cooked us up a fantastic meal to feed the masses. They cooked up some hotdogs and sausages that were superb, along with all the trimmings that goes along with it like baked beans, cole slaw, chips,etc.... If you went away hungry , it was your own fault
David Georgeson also manned his camera and shot some nice pics as well as some cool videos.

Richard Casper.....Rich manned the left pylon all day long and did one heck of a job out there sitting under the hot sun working the air horn to let the judges know when a plane would cut. Rich maybe did too good a job, in fact so good that he blew the air horn on ME when I made a cut during the A main race, LOL . Maybe I need to take him out back and speak to him about that? hahahhaha
Great job Rich Casper!!!

On the right pylon pole we had David Ortegon who came all the way from Tennessee! David rolled up to Bham and jumped out of his car and said " what can I help out with today? " David worked the right pylon pole and I could hear from the judges tent time to time that he knew how to use his button on the air horn too! David did not fly yesterday but now get this, he paid for a pilots fee and lunch just to support the club's event ! Thats very noble of you to do this David and for all your work , we are most greatful. Luckily , I didnt get a cut on the right pole ( I think anyway) . Maybe you can talk with Rich on my behalf about that ?

Ron Slay helped out with registration and tech inspection as did Rich Casper and this really helped in speeding the whole process along before the race. Also both Ron and Rich took in the money for registration along with selling of the raffle tickets. Again, thanks to both of you for doing this.

Tim 'Battman' Batt brought his PA equipment for us to use and also was kind enough to make us a starting matrix so we could have a pilots grid list to start the race. Tim also gave me a huge hand at the start line with help scoring and calling the race throughout the day.

David Phillips, aka D2 from Alabaster RC also helped out at the judging start/finish line with scoring and also brought his now famous dry erase board along so that every pilot could see just how they were doing as the heat races were run. D2 also brought us an extra tent for use at one of the pylon poles.

Ernie Duffey also pitched in whenever needed at the start line by announcing the race from time to time.

Randy 'Bos' Bosworth also was there the day before the race to help set up pylon poles and get things squared away. Bos also worked the fuel jugs during the race to make sure we had plenty of go juice throughout the day.

Russell and Sue Poe also came out and lended a hand and made sure the folks kept their plates full at lunch.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the above as well as anyone else I had forgot to mention!!

Ok, without further adeau lets move along now to the race details......
We had 12 pilots registered so we ran each heat race with 3 pilots flying at one time during a heat race instead of the usual 4. This worked out really well. We would run 6 rounds and at the end we would then run the A main and the B main races.
The heat and humidity Saturday would become factors in the airplanes performance. In the early heats the humidity wasnt terrible but it was certainly there, but as the day went on the humidity rose as well as the temp. One had to stay on top of his needle settings in order to compensate for the conditions and lean runs.
We ran 2 rounds and around 11: 45 we broke for lunch. After our plates were empty and our bellies full with food cooked by the Georgeson's, we carried on and ran 4 more rounds. All the racing was close knit all day long and the only plane fatality that Im aware of is one by Greg Doe of Tennessee by taking his primary plane out of the race by contact with a pylon pole......more on Greg later.
After the 6 heats were ran, the scoring proved that we had a 2 way tie for 4th place in the A main race. Hummm, thats sounds familiar since the same thing happened to me and Rick Grim last week up in Harvest,Al.
Ernie Duffey and Mike Talley would fly off with the winner flying in the A main and the loser would go to the B main.
(Just a quick work about Mike Talley and his brother Ron) ...Mike raced rc boats for years and years and has several national as well as world records under his belt. This was only his 2nd EVER Club40 race to attend but dont look now Ma, but Mike has made it into one of the MAIN races already !!! Mike's times lap steadily improved as the day went on so I say we had better watch out for Mike later on as he could be a force to be reckoned with .
Ernie Duffey came out the winner of the tie breaker so that put Ern in the A Main and Mike Talley would compete in the B.

We ran the B main first with Greg Doe, Tom Calamusa , Don Peck and Mike Talley going head to head. Recall what I said that we would come back to Greg Doe? Well Greg threw all caution to the wind and came back with his back up plane to be the victor of
the B Main!! Not only that but Greg had fast time of the day at 1:23.9 ... Nice work Greg!
2nd place B-Main went to Tom Calamusa, followed by Mike Talley in 3rd and Don Peck from Huntsville grabbing the 4th place position.

Moving along to the grande finale with the A main race we had the 4 top scoring pilots wanting a win! The lineup included my buddy Jim Andrews ( Alabaster RC) , Ernie Duffey ( NARCA club-Harvest Al) Randy Bos Bosworth (Birmingham RC) and
myself John McGowan ( Birmingham RC) . The 30 second call counted down and 4 planes came screaming down across the start line!!
Jim Andrews hit the line first followed by Ernie, myself and Bos. Jim and Ernie were up front for several laps then the dreaded air horn sounded from one of the pole judges !
I had worked myself up thru the pack and finally overtook Jim Andrews and Ernie but not without a good fight from both of them. I crossed the line first after 10 laps followed by Jim,Bos and Ernie. My caller Greg Doe says to me that I've won. I was feeling good.
Then after we are done it gets good and comes the heartache .... there had actually been 2 horns sound at about the same time signalling a cut on each pole , making that 2 cuts!!! Jim Andrews is the fortunate one to receive the 1st horn from the right pole and yours truly gets the other blast of that hated decible sound off the left pole. I think both Jim and I were on opposite poles at the same time as why some of us didnt hear both horns.
So after default, the day's winner would become Randy 'Bos' Bosworth in 1st place A Main WINNER!!!! , Ernie Duffey 2nd place, John McGowan 3rd place and Jim Andrews takes home the 4th place award for the A Main.

Congrats to everyone who came out yesterday to race. Its all about the fun we all have that makes Club40 Racing so great.
John

I forgot to add that we used my new stopwatches and that we had enough help from pilots that werent flying at the time to have not only a dedicated lap-counter/spotter for each pilot, but we also had a 3rd person for each pilot to work the stopwatch. This worked really well and made for a almost foolproof way of knowing what each pilots true time was as well as the lap that he was on.

David, great job on your pics. By chance, if you have taken a pic of Mr Don Peck who won the 4th place B Main slot, could you post his mugshot too?

Edit: I pulled a pic of Don Peck and am posting it here as he won the 4th place slot for B Main. Congrats Mr Peck!!!!
Thanks !!

That was the one picture I didn't get a chance to take. I started taking pictures when you were giving out the 3rd place b main award.

I too would like to thank everyone for a fantastic day of racing! I had a great time and everything went extremely well.

The only thing that could have been better is if I could have participated. I flew but didn't really race. The engine in Batman was not turning up and I should have switched to my backup plane, Robin, but by that time I figured out it wasn't the prop that was the problem I was so low in the points standing it would not have made any differance.

What happens when you are in "overload"? You start making mistakes. Boy did I !!!!

I was so focused on getting everything ready for an extremely busy weekend, and a race too, that I went off and forgot to pack the Bat-clock. This thing is big and how I forgot it still puzzels me. You probably have done this too, walk around your airplane shop and keep looking around for something. You aren't quite sure what you are looking for but something is needed. Soon after you leave THEN you remember what it was. That was me Saturday morning.......

I was rather frustrated when I could not find my helmet mount for my GOPRO helmet cam so I gave up on that then started to gather up the PA system which I realize is over at the new house. A detour was needed to go and pick it up. Don Peck was driving Ernie and I to B'ham in his full size van so we had plenty of room for the Bat-clock and PA. Oh well, at least I remebered my planes and transmitters, not that they did me much good.

Tim

Yep, I had a great time! Good flying, good folks and good food. John McGowan, Birmingham R/C and all of the folks that helped make the race happen really did a great job. Thanks, everyone.
