Hi guys,

I have got a vintage glider equipped with only two ailerons (no flap)
I would like to use both ailerons to reduce the speed during the final approach procedure. I'm hesitating between puttting the ailerons up or fully down.
What do you recommend to me, please ?

Thanks !

Thierry

Try it up high.

If the ailerons are out on the tips I wouldn't put them down at the same time, that gives you wash in and will help induce tip stalling.

Thanks your your answer !
My glider's model is a german Bergfalke MU 13 and my ailerons stretch from the last 1/3 of the wing to the tip.
I'm surprised because my opinion was : if I put the ailerons down, I increase the lift (and increase the drag as well), so the stall is reduced.
Do I do a mistake ?

The theory is with the ailerons drooped out on the tips the stall is more accentuated out there..........at the tips, hence the wings are more sensitive to dropping to what ever side the wind is hitting, or gravity is pulling, etc. One might be just more naturally sensitive than the other although you don't have engine torque in this case.

Yes you do a mistake.

Washout .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washout_(aviation)

http://www.propdesigner.co.uk/html/washout_and_washin.html

You want the root to stall first so you still have aileron control

The only thing I can tell you is to give it a try at a comfortable height and see what happens. Start small, work your way up.

I agree with last post however if you have a programable TXI would advise adding compensation on elevator just as full house or RES models somewhere 3-8 degrees up. Try at safe altitude.

We used to use "CROW" which was ailerons up and flaps down...produced big drag under control when on an aux switch for killing speed with no pitch up...
UP on both  will kill lift on the outer part of the wing...but like they say try it at a safe altitude...the particular airfoil you have will also make a difference ...and some change root to tip so this can work well...

Up for spoilerons is certainly the way to go.

You'll likely be limited to the angle by the hinges. Seldom are aileron hinges set to allow a healty 45 to 60 degrees of up angle for spoilerons if they were intended as ailerons only when originally done. Even 20 degrees up would help but you won't get the full benifit at that shallow an angle. 30 to 45 is nice and 60 would be darn near ideal.
