Status: offline 		Does anyone remember or know the mathematical formula for determining the amount of oil that needs to be added to increase the percentage of lubrication in a gallon of methanol/oil/nitro mix ?

Fiddling around with my very rusty algebra, I came up with the following:

Ounces to be added = 128 * (%N - %O)/(1 - %N)

Where:
%N = desired oil % as a decimal
%O = original oil % as a decimal

eg: to increase the oil percentage of a gallon of fuel from 18% to 20% you would add 3.2 ounces of oil to the mix.

Ounces to be added = 128 * (0.2 - 0.18)/(1 - 0.2)

Does this sound correct ?

Just 2 cents....

If I'm not mistaken....18% oil content = 28oz to the gallon,
so many ounces of nitro and so many ounces of methanol to get a certan percentage fuel mix....for a gallon even.
Like 18%oil, 15% nitro...
IF you add more oil to make the mix a lil stiffer it has thrown out the percentages of the other two ingredients (methanol and notro)...and it is now something of a mix...you now have over a gallon of mix..the nitro % has stayed the same the methanol % has stayed the same...but is now out of proportion...
Actually the more oil you add and want to have a "gallon" the less ounces of methanol you add...the ounces of nitro stays the same...
In theory you have to add a little more nitro and a little more methanol in the right ounces to equal the offset for you adding more oil...

Ckeck the mixing chart for model engines at the Klotz WEB sight..
I think you just might want to D/L it and look at the ratios..

Have you missed the point or am I reading it wrong? Adding more oil will of course decrease the % of the other ingredients. But isn't that the object of the exercise? The man wants an oilier fuel. Adding other ingredients to maintain the proportion(%) will achieve nothing.

Yes, you are right....in one area, but missing the other area I was refering to...

Depending on the engine it can bo good or it can be bad...
I've mixed my fuel for years and have played with mixes just for the heck of it...(but gone gas)

18% oil 15% nitro 1 gallon jug
oil = 23 oz
nitro = 19 oz
methanol = 86 oz.


20% oil 15% nitro 1 gallon jug
oil = 26 oz
nitro =19 oz
methanol = 83 oz

Notice the difference in the methanol content, lower and lower the more oil you add to it for the gallon if you are mixing the lower the methanol content goes.

That nitro is the part that is going out of porporton with the mix and sometimes will affect the performance of a motor...
You have improved one quality, but actually done something to the other at the same time by actually thinning out the nitro ...with the extra that has been added to the mix...
If you sart out with a gallon jug of fuel and add more ounces of oil the more you add the more off it gets..

That is all I was trying to say...
I'm one of those people who are a sticker for a lot of things.
It was nothing against you or anyone, but if you think on it long enought you get what I am saying...

Status: offline 		Now I agree with you. Just lately I have become reluctant to offer advice on this Forum. I always seem to end up arguing with the many "Forum Experts". So if the altered fuel is good or bad for the engine, will increase or decrease performance, is a decision I leave up to the "Mixer".

I could have said that a 2% oil difference will do nothing. Think of how much actual oil that is in a say, 10oz tank. But I will not say it.

Whew good!!!! For a minute I thought that this was going to end up in a flame war....

Really everything would be just fine..if the needle was peaked and the opened two clicks...but they keep trying to run em' lean and try to make up the difference with oil...
