Thanks for the suggestion. I had seen it on BUSA web site but didn't know anything about it and it was a little pricey to be taking blind chance on it. But it looks really good on your cub so I will get some and try it out.

Blazer293, I  also agree with SDP that Solartex is by far the best and easiest to use, give it a try...

Hey SDP, I heard that there was two big Power Ball winners in Arizona you one of them?  Just think of how many planes you could build with $550,000,000 !!!!

Back to the Nieuport build!!!

This morning I made the forming guides for the elevator and rudder.  The plans call for these to be made from blocks of balsa, glued together like a puzzle.  I formed the tail feathers on my Cub by laminating several layers of balsa and I plan to do the same on the Nieuport.  It is far superior in terms of strength and is the "right" way to do it.

The first step was to make a paper template of the former.  I just traced the template from the plans, using the inner edge of the framework as my guide.  Once the paper had the tracing I cut out the paper template and taped it to a piece of thin hardboard.  Hardboard is much easier to shape than the MDF I'll use for the guide.  At that point the hardboard is rough-cut on the bandsaw then the edge if fine tuned with the disc sander.  Once the hardboard is tuned it gets a last, final tune with a sanding block.

Once the hardboard templates are done they are double stick taped to a piece of 3/4" MDF.  Then the MDF is rough-cut to about 1/8" the final dimension.

Once the parts are rough-cut they are run across a flush-trim router bit guided by the hardboard template.  Results are a perfect forming template.

Note to follow on the lamination process.

Im going to try a slightly different method of forming the wood this time (Vs my Cub).  This time I am going to attach the form to a wood base and use 2" blocks to work my way around the form.  Each block will be pulled up tight to the wood in the form and a nail will be shot into the block with a nail-gun locking it in place.  I am also going to change glues.  Last time I used regular PVA wood glue.  This time I am going to try some resin glue made by DAP.  It will give me a longer work time once the glue is applied.  I did some research reference laminating wood and a lot of woodworkers swear by the stuff.

The combination of wood blocks and resin glue should make the process a whole lot smoother.  Last time I felt rushed playing with the clamps and quick drying glue.

We'll see, the glue is on order so maybe next weekend I can give it a shot.  I'm going to try the elevator first due to its larger and easier curve.

More details will be shown as I go through the process.

Here are the forms, with some of the blocks.  I will use packing tape on the base of the form, on the form itself, and on the edge of the blocks to prevent the glue from sticking to those parts.

I got mine from Tower....

You will need to paint them so hopefully you have some artist skills.  I don't but I was lucky enough to have my friend volunteer to assemble and paint the parts.

The process of laminating was much easier using the nail gun vs clamps.

First I put some packing tape on the bottom board of the form.  Then I put tape onto the actual form and on one side of the blocks.  The glue will not stick to the tape allowing the finished part to easily pop out of the form.

Once the form was prepped with tape I screwed the form onto the base, a couple wood screws is all it needs.

Because of the gentle bend of the horizontal stabilizer I did not bother to soak the wood in water.  The wood will easily bend around the curve without breaking.

First I took the center piece of wood and coated both sides with glue, in this case I just used regular wood glue.  The stabilizer's leading edge is made of three 1/4" X 1/8" pieces so only the center needed glue.

One the part was glued I stacked the wood and placed it onto the form.  First I centered up the laminations on the form then put the center block in place and shot a single nail through it.  I have adjusted the nailgun to leave the head of the nail sticking out the top of the block making removal of the nail a lot easier.  Then I just worked from the center out to the ends.

The process of nailing the blocks in place probably took about two minutes.  It was simple and stress free.  Nailing the blocks in place vs clamps is much easier.

Once all the blocks were in place I used a piece of wood to push all the laminations down onto the base, to be sure it was all straight and level

I am still waiting on the glue for the parts with more laminations and with greater curves.  I'll post some more when I get to those pieces as the process will change slightly.

RCU has struggled with problems uploading photos.  Something like Server Error 500.....

Try again, I just uploaded some and it was working again.

I finally got to build something new instead of fixing something!

The horizontal stabilizer is built.  The pre-made leading edge made the process of building the stab super simple.

Next up, the pre-bending of the outer perimeter of each elevator half.

Im taking a little break to warm back up, feels like 30 in my garage, then I will continue the building.

So far I have taken a piece of 36" by 1/16" balsa and stripped it into 1/4" X 1/16" planks.  The rudder will require 8 pieces of 1/16" wood as the perimeter wood  is 1/2" in depth while being a 1/4" thick.  The stripping was done with the bandsaw.  (Stripping wood from one piece is much cheaper than buying it already to size.)  Then the planks were placed into a tub full of hot water.

While the wood soaked I prepped the form.

After about an hour of soaking the wood was really soft.

The wood was stacked and placed into the form.  At this point there is no glue.  I will prebend the wood and allow it to totally dry in the form.  Next weekend I will pull the wood out of the form, add the glue, and put it back into the form.

I should receive the resin glue I ordered on Wednesday.  Hopefully this glue is easier to work with than wood glue when drying time needs to be extended.

The wood, soaked in water only, bent really easily around the form.  Some people use chemicals, like ammonia, to help soften the wood but by using thin enough wood + water this is totally unnecessary.

Photo 2 shows the layout of the rudder comparted to the piece I am making.

Pre-Forming the Elevator Halves.

Same Process as the Rudder except there is a double stack of wood, one on top of the other, for each elevator side.

That's about it for this week, I cant go any further without the resin glue.  Process will continue next weekend.

Today I glued-up the Rudder and one of the Elevators.  The Dap plastic resin glue was nice to work with.  The best thing I could relate the glue to is honey.  It starts as a dry power, much like sand, that you mix that with water.  After mixing I just used my gloved finger to apply a layer of glue to one side of each lamination.  Once all the parts were ready I re-formed them around the form.  Again, the nail gun really made this process easy.  The pre-bending I did last week really made the glue-up simple.  One of the photos shows the elevator laminations fresh off the form after the initial bending.  As you can see the parts hold most of their shape.

I'll post an update when I get to sanding the parts.  Hopefully the glue sands well.

I posted a photo of the glue, pre-mixed with water, and after mixing.

So far I happy with the process.  The resin glue sets up much slower than standard PVA wood glue.

This afternoon I finally organized a large quantity of Taps, Die, and solid carbide bits I had been given by my Father.  He obtained the items when a friend of his, a machinist, passed away.  Most of the standard sizes are there and in a large quantity.  I have something like 50 1/4-20 taps.  Machinist must use one tap, if not more, per job.

The items had been in boxes for quite a while and now that they are organized I can start putting them to use.

The bins are all metal ones I ordered through Global Industrial.  Much nicer than the junky plastic stuff available at the local hardware stores.  They are 18" X 12" X 3" and have 24 compartments.  I also ordered six smaller organizers with the same number of dividers but smaller in size, for all my screws / hardware.

I will make a wooden rack to hold the organizers, which I have four of.

Today I pulled the perimeter wood from the form and built the rudder.  I also pulled the first elevator and formed the second.

Referece the rudder,  I did a quick sanding of the formed part to remove the majority of the glue squeezed out during its construction.  The resin glue sands much like wood and was great to work with.

The formed piece held its shape perfectly.  The final construction of the rudder was easy.

The part was given a little modification, doubling of the area of the hinges, to make installing the robart hingepoints easy.

That's it for this weekend.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a metal lathe for some time.  I'm not sure how much use it will be for model airplanes but I have run into a few times were a lathe would have been really useful.  I have always been fascinated watching metal be turned so I decided to get one.

The lathe I decided upon was a Sherline mini-lathe.  It is only capable of turning small things but it seems popular, powerful for its size, and of good quality (Made in the USA in a time of made in China!)

There are a few items I plan to make for the Nieuport already, including the Venturi for the side of the fuselage and a scale instrument for the cockpit.

Should be fun!

Thats a nice lathe for the price. I have a mini mill that I use all the time. Tooling is the big cost.
