Sorry for the lack of updates.....  But all I can say is AWESOME.  That is how I would describe the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

If I were without the wife I could have stayed there all day!  What a great display of aviation.  The WWI and WWII sections were the most amazing.  Each plane had its own pad complete with info and pictures.

The lighting was a little difficult for photos due to the darkness but if your camera can handle a little higher ISO and you have stabilization they can be taken.

I spent a bit of time with the Nieuport 28 and here are some of the photos.  I have some additional photos of some of the linkage.

Building to resume shortly,

Hey SDP, Once again you are doing a fantastic build thread. I feel like a groupie!!

Do you have any pics of your table saw setup? Is it a full table saw with a different blade or a smaller hobby sized table?

I use a full size table saw.  Mine is a Jet hybrid saw.  It is part contractor style part cabinet saw.  The saw has a Forest Woodworker II blade installed (Really nice blade).   I made the router table, which bolts between the fence rail extensions.  The table has an aluminum router insert I purchased to fit my specific router.

Lately I have been using my bandsaw quite a bit.  I find it cuts almost as good as the table saw with a nice blade installed and the fence attached.  It is also a lot safer to use.  The blade of a band saw pulls the workpiece into the table.  The table saw likes to try and fire it back at you.  I have never lost my "Fear" of the table saw, which is a good thing I guess.

I'll throw in a photo of the table saw as well as an overview of my other tools.  You'll note they are all on wheels.  My wife and I park in the garage so I need to be able to shove the bigger tools into the edges.

Might as well show you these too.

Here are some of the wood working tools from the original Boeing Factory.  12" table saw, planer, jointer, and a 36" bandsaw.  I like the complete lack of safety devices on these.  All belt fed from above.

Cool pic's from the Museum of Flight! Shame to think of the Skill & Craftsmanship of yesteryear are all but gone in todays disposable society. (looked at furnature lately)

Any news on the rear stringers ?

No updates on the Nieuport. I'm just finishing up the Aero-Works Cub. Then back to the Nieuport. Was out of town all last week.

Wow!!! I would have dropped the wife off at the local mall and spend the whole day at the museum.
Really nice photography, thanks for sharing.

Sundevilpilot I have been silently lurking around your thread since you started it. I love antique aircraft and your subject has to be almost everybody’s favorite.

The photos you posted of the museum brought back memories of my visit there 10 years ago where I was fortunate to view a beautiful golden oldie.

It’s a Caproni Ca. 20 monowing in it’s original covering (the only one ever built). It is said that it was the worlds first fighter plane.

Try aiming that gun at a moving target.

I have since always wanted to try to replicate it in a ¼ scale model all the way to the now tatty antiquated covering.

Notice the fully enclosed le Rhône engine with cooling inlets in the huge spinner. Very advanced streamlining for 1914.

Was this beauty still there?

Sorry for the brief hijack

She is still there.  The Caproni CA.20 is the first plane you come to upon entry into the WWI section.  It is somewhat tattered but I thought it was great.  Looked like a paper mache airplane at first.  I thought its condition was amazing, given it is the only one ever built.

It looked like it would fly!

Today I received a real gift from my friend Denis.  The guns and pilot are absolutely stunning.  There is no way I could had done the painting that was applied to them.  I'll try and capture some of their detail in photos.  I am still in awe of them and was nervous just taking them home.  They are going to go somewhere safe until they are needed for installation.  I am really going to have to step up my game in the finishing department to give any justice to the paintwork.

And I will need to fly these art pieces on a plane!

I heard Denis say it took about 70 hours to assemble and paint these.  I am really thrilled he gave that time to me.

Thanks Denis !!!!

WOW! Nice work on the pilot/guns. Modeling is one of those activities that makes for close friendships. I suspect SDP that you have helped your friend Dennis in such a way at sometime too. Well, the 'Hoosier Dawn Patrol' started Friday w/ quite a bit of flying being done on Thur. on a perfect day to fly. This annual event is held at the AMA flying site and the BUSA trailer was in attendance once again. Saved 10 bucks plus no shipping on the 1/4 scale 28 kit. About croaked however when I started pricing Solartex. One of the flyers told me that most of the guys use SIG Coverall w/ StixIt adhesive to save a bunch on covering. Neat to see 'em in the flesh eh? A couple of buddies and I saw the one at the AF Museum in Dayton last Nov.. GREAT Thread!

Back to building!

Today I begun the process of adding the stringers to the rear of the fuselage.

I have never done this process before so, as instructed by other builders of this model, I will follow Balsa USA's instructions to the letter.

So far I have installed three sets of fuselage formers, and still have two left (Each sets has four components).  Easy enough but I am taking great care to get them straight to assist in keeping the stringers straight.

I should be able to get all the formers in place today and begin the process of adding the stingers tomorrow.

Some of the die cutting on the formers is a little rough, appear to have been double stamped, but I should be able to work through the issue.

Nice work SDP.  Hard to follow which thread you're on as you have so many projects going!  Enjoying them all.  I've started on my Ryan last week.

I try to only have one project going!  The crash of my Sig Cub changed all that.  Fortunately I only have two projects now, the Nieuport and the repair of the Sig Cub.

Today I started adding the stringers to the rear of the fuselage.  I have never done this type of building before and so far it is going OK.  Hopefully I am doing them correctly.  The top and bottom stringers are nice and straight.  The ones on the side taper inwards at the second to last rear former.  The fuselage changes shape in that area, round into an oval, so hopefully this is correct.  I have looked at the three view in the manual and the top down view appears to reflect this.

I can tell you now, working with stringers is a little tedious.  Four installed and only a bunch more to go.

I'm getting there with the stringers.  I have a good technique now and it is just a matter of getting them installed.

I have been using the minumal amount of weight (Wood Blocks) to keep the stringers down in their notches until the glue sets up.

Seven to go.

I like the shape of the top stringers, like a humpback.  Very distinctive shape.

Hi SDP,
I went to the Airforce Museum in Dayton Oh today and they have a N28 on display so I snapped a few pics for you. The lighting is terrible in that place for taking pics. I tried to get some closeup pics of some of the details I thought you might find interesting.
If you want the full res images send me a PM and I will send them to you via e-mail.
Later!!

Thanks a lot for taking and posting those photos!

I'm juggling the repair of my Cub and progress on the Nieuport.  I need to order a tailwheel assembly for the Nieuport so I can add the gear plate to the rear of the fuselage.  I plan on ordering that on Monday.  I usually prefer the Sig leaf-spring setup.  Simple gear and works great.

Work will continue!

I have a self imposed rule, to only work on one model at a time.  When I try to juggle projects I dont get anything finished.

So.....

My poor Cub was sitting there all smashed.  I had to keep moving it to get to my other planes.  I just hated looking at it.  Building was stopped on the Nieuport until I can get the Cub repaired.

The repair process is just about complete.  Once I get the radio installation in the fusealge completed and the windshield reinstalled I should be able to start up the Nieuport build again.

The Nieuport will be built, just a little delayed.

I understand as I have the same problem when I start too many projects. Sounds like a rule I should adopt. I have been following your thread and as many as I can find on the n28. Yours was one of only a few that I found on the 1/4 scale BUSA N28 and is by far the most detailed. I ordered mine sunday and hope to start on it soon. Question. What covering do you use? The only fabric covering I have ever used was super coverite. I really liked it. But that was 20 or so years ago. I guess they still make it. The repairs on the cub are looking good. You really do some very nice work. Looking forward to your future progress on the N28.

I have used various types of covering over the year and in my opinion there is only one, Solartex.  It is available through Balsa USA.  It is the easiest covering to apply.  It is a bit heavier than Monokote/Ultracote but it is 100 times better.  It is a low heat covering applied with an iron only, no heatgun.  A heatgun just overheats (Overtightens) the covering.

Trust me, when you get to covering get Solartex!!

No, I dont work for them.
