Yeah the Air and Space museum is great.

Status: online 		Construction begins!  First glue joint made, about a thousand to go.

I got authorization from the warden to move the workbench into the house for the summer.  The garage is too hot to be out there for extended periods of time.

Work on this plane starts with the wings.  Here are the plywood center section of the upper wing tips.  After the joint cures I will add the balsa pieces to each side of the tip completing the part.

The die cutting on the ply was average and the cutting on the balsa pieces was above average.  The ply needed a little help with a knife to release the parts and the balsa parts came out perfectly clean.

While digging through the kit to find the tip parts I examined some of the other cutting in the kit.  It all looks really good.

Note - when I lined up the wing tips to glue the joint I found they did not match one set of the plans.  The wings are on two different sheets, left and right sides, and the left side plans did not match the radius of the die cut parts.  No big issue as long as each part matched but it is something to note.  I used the right side plans to make both parts on top of each other.

Status: offline 		I know what you mean about the Garage being Hot, at 103 today, I am thinking of building on swing shift tonight when it gets down to 90. My other option is to get up at 4am while its in the 70s.

My goal was to finish construction before May, probably not gonna happen. I don't mind covering in the house or building for that matter, but soon I will be moving in my Whitewater Raft gear into the garage for two upcoming trips. That stuff takes up the whole garage. I need a Three Car garage. Or a compound like Denis' with a building room overlooking the airport

Not much to report, the wing tips for the upper wings are complete.

I build on drywall and the last piece I had was all cut up from the construction of my Cub so I need to stop by the store and get a new piece, so that's it for today.

I'm going flying tomorrow but I should be able to buy a sheet of drywall and begin construction of the upper wing panels on Tuesday.  The upper wing looks fairly simple in design and should not take too long to build.

I finished one last year (pictures above) powered by a G26 magneto, great combination, I flew most of the time 1/2 -3/4 throttle for about 20 minutes per flight. I sold it since I am working on the 1/3 scale version.
Good luck on the project, by the way I would not use the plastic cowl, order the fiber glass one from Fiberglass Specialities.

Status: online 		Upper Right Wing Begins.  The manual said to start with the left, which allows you to reference the right wing plan complete with the wood dimension detail, but I already had the right side plan flattened out on the building table.

The wing is so simple you really don't need much reference.

So far I'm really impressed with the die cutting.  All the parts basically fall out of the sheets with minimal cleanup.  For good measure I hit the pieces with some sandpaper to true them up but this is probably not needed.

No modifications thus far.

Status: online 		Wingtip, upper spars, and sub-leading edge installed.  So far I have found very little issues.  Everything goes together pretty good.

The only part I had to modify was the rib at the tips.  It seems the basla doublers for the tips were not cut to accomidate the notch in the front of the rib.  I had a choice, modify the rib making the notch bigger, or cut away some of the balsa doubler on the tip.  I opened up the notch on the rib allowing it to go around the tip, took all of a minute.

The third photo shows the wing tip rib and the notch at the front.

Status: offline 		One thing i have never understood about the N28, I have quite a few friends with 1/4 BUSA WW1 planes, one of them has a N28, for some reason on the ground I am not that drawn to the looks of the N28, but once its up in the air I think its one of the better looking WW1 birds ...

For the life of me that makes no sense...

its just good seeing all of them at the field together, have fun and get it in the air, that design flies GREAT !

I installed the inner sheeting at the rear of the wing and installed the trailing edge.  Then I tapered the spars at the tips in prepartation of the forwards wing, upper and lower, sheeting.

To taper the spars I used a combination of a hand plane work and sanding with a sanding bar.

Everything is coming along nicely and the wing is built in a logical sequence following the manual.

If all goes well I should have the upper wing, right and left side, completed by Wednesday.

Yesterday was spent at the Tucson AeroTow..  That was a lot of fun to watch!  Here is a link to some photos I took at that event.

Status: offline 		You are really moving right along with your build! Looking very nice (as always)! I see you are using the glue I like to use! Gorilla Wood Glue it takes a longer to set up, but it sure make a strong and clean joint! 

Are you leaning towards gas with this build? I think gas or electric will make a great airplane! Both power systems have there pros & cons!

Hope to see you out flying tomorrow! I think you a maiden flight to do for someone if I am not mistaking?!

Status: online 		I just finished up installing the sheeting onto the bottom of the wing's leading edge.  Next up, possibly after flying tomorrow, I'll be able to put the sheeting onto the top of the wing.

Prior to installing the sheeting I trued it up one of the edges.  To do this I ran a long straight edge along one side, made a pencil line, then trimmed to the line with the hand plane.  After that edge was more or less straight I placed the pencil line / trued edge up against the fence of my table saw and trimmed the other side.  This makes a perfectly straight piece of sheeting.

Status: offline 		I also started this kit about a month ago and have both wings finished and have started on the fuselage. I am using an OPS Maxi 30 converted to gas for power. This engine is heavier and more powerful than the recommended G-23, but weight in the nose probably isn't a bad thing. I bought $150 worth of Solartex and $45 vinyl graphics which just about doubled the cost of the kit. Oh well, it's only money.

Status: online 		This morning I went ahead and got started with the top sheeting of the right wing.  This step is alway a little nerve racking as the straightness of the wing depends on the perfect application of the final piece of sheeting.  Here is how I made sure the wing stayed flat and true as the sheeting was attached.

First the wing was weighted down onto my building table.  Then I glued the sheeting to the wings main spar only.   The glue joint along the spar was allowed to fully dry.  Then a long straight edge (Aluminum Saw Guide) was weighted by attaching some clamps to it.  Then I clamped a stop block (Angle finder) onto the bench which will prevent the straight edge from slipping off the wing.  At that point the glue was applied to the ribs and the leading edge, the sheeting was pulled down onto the wing, and the straight edge was placed onto the sheeting at the leading edge.  There is just enough weight on the straight edge that the sheeting will fully bend down onto the leading edge.  Now I wait for the glue to dry.
