I have a Gruman Widgeon, with a pair of OS 40la two strokes. I am looking to replace them with 4 strokes. I have a pair of Magnum 52 four strokes on hand, and was wondering if they would make a decent replacement for the 40la. Any ideas?

G'day

So long as they are reliable and produce approximately similar performance, they should be fine. I have had an ASP 52 some time ago and I have an OS 52 Surpass on which the ASP and Magnum four strokes are based and they all ran well and were also very similar in performance. I flew a Goldberg Cub with an ASP 52 FS at one stage and it did it well.

I am currently running a Magnum 61FS in a very large Telemaster (about 96 inch wingspan) and it has plenty of power though this was not always the case. Originally the head leaked (inlet valve) and no amount of lapping would make it seal so I ended up putting a new head ($23 from Hobbyking) on it and it is now fine.

As I said in the first paragraph, reliability and similar performance are what you need in a twin. If they give you this, then they should be find as replacements for the LA 40s.

Cheers

Power wise you should be in great shape as the 40LA engines are very wimpy. The 52 four strokes make decent power but take about a gallon to break in .

Thanks guys. I plan to run them both extensively on a test stand, to be sure they run dependably.

I agree with AMB too; I have seen an LA 40 running as a diesel with a conversion head and it was a very strong runner. The other big advantage of diesels is that they rarely dead stick. You really have to totally get the tuning of a diesel wrong for it to stop. They just keep on going. I am currently running in a PAW 40 diesel and it is showing great promise. Diesels will also tolerate long exhaust pipes so you can run the exhaust residue to the back of the plane if you want.

I am also waiting on an ASP 91 FS too so I like both types.
