Hello,
Very new to the Hobby. I have had a MGT sitting in my basement for about 7 years. My 4 year old son wants to get it going since he is RC crazy!! His grandpa has been buying him RC cars,Helicopters and he even has a nice RC boat for the cabin.
I dont even know were to begin with the MGT. It ran 7 years ago. I believe put it away after i broke something in the front drive shaft. But its been sitting in a basement. for a long time now. You think the electronics will be alright??? Should I clean the motor?? Its kind of dirty and I really dont know were to start. Any tips would be great.

1 remove engine and pipe.
2 Carefully remove pull-start system to get access to piston area
3 remove grow-plug
4 use a Q-tip/cotton swab to clean out carbon/debris
5 Drop preferably After-Run oil in moving parts area
6 slow rotate flywheel spreading oil

Thank you for the advice. I plan on taking it apart this week. See what parts I need to replace. I don't think I even have the stuff to start it. But pretty sure the local hobby shop should have that stuff. My son is pretty excited to start this thing up. Hopefully its not a money pit just to get going.

Guy at the hobby store said to clean motor with brake cleaner and then spray it with WD40. He only carries traxxas parts so I will be buying my parts online.

I brought the engine into work to clean it up some. I work in a machine shop. The clutch bell was completely rusted I cleaned that up. The whole motor was covered in grit. Cleaned that up. Muffler was very dirty and stained. I took a light leather grinding wheel to it and polished it a little. Motor has good pressure and everything looks well lubed in there. Now its putting it back together and buying a few parts!

Great to see the youngsters get involved. They all seem to love RC, especially the big monster trucks. Be prepared to buy tools and parts, as this thing will break down a lot. I have owned maybe 10 MGT's over the years. Used to race and bash them all the time. Sold them all off recently.

The big key with these things is MAINTENANCE! If you keep an eye on things, then you can avoid a lot of breakage. For instance, the diffs will loosen up over time. You will usually notice some strange 'clicking' upon acceleration or braking. STOP right there and rebuild the diffs, as per my old write-up: http://www.monstergt.com/articles/ (go there, then click on "Transmission and Differentials", then click "Diff shimming" ) Things like this will save byou tons of time and money.

Good luck and have fun!!!!

Glad to help, man. Here's my old MGT web site. Most of the info is still relevant, especially to your 'ancient' .21 MGT: http://csgbenefits.org/mgt/

Feel free to PM me if you get stuck......

Read up on your Diff Shimming. Think since I have the truck apart might as well do this also. Seems easy enough. Just shim it up and mill .015 off the drive cup. What do you use for grease in the tranny??

I have used many different lubes in there. White lithium always worked good and is readily available. But I have used assorted automotive greases too, and they all seem to work well. Whatever you use - most of it will get flung off in short order....
