I picked up this World Models P51 for 100  bucks. The manual says its a 40-46 size, but the box says its a uses a .40-.60 size 2 stroke. The build is already started but needs the radio system and engine installed. The guy gave me another wing set from a Dago Red red model with a little damage, but its usable with a little work and its got aileron servos, retract servo and retracts that all are in good working shape.

I know that P51s like to fly with some speed so Im thinking of going with bigger motor for it. I do have an OS 46ax that im going to pull out of my great planes .46-.55 size Extra 300 because it just doesnt have enough gusto to fly well.

So I have the option of using the recommended OS .46. I also got a Thunder Tiger .61 pro from the same guy with a pitts muffler for 75 bucks. My third option is to use a 55 ax that I got off ebay today.

Id appreciate some info from anyone with some experience with this aircraft, or a P51 of similar size.

I just dont wanto to put too much weight on the nose or on the wings...
The wingspan is 57", wing area is 585sq inches. Flying weight is about 5.5 pounds.

The pics are with the .61 pro mocked up on it.

Thanks,
Jeremy

well,   its not a warplane, its a racer,   so, i would fly it like i stole it,   for me? 91 fourstroke,   or an inverted 60, with a wrap around muffler, PLEASE dont side wind the engine, and cut the cowl,    that would look horrible

Biggest and Lightest engine you can fit, maybe something like 2-stroke 0.91 OS FX...because nothing is powerful and light enough at the same time when it comes to aviation

Anyone who manufactures, sells or buys a Mustang in those colours should be placed in gaol (or jail as the yanks call it)
If you must fly it then just use the 61 you have, it will have plenty of power for it.
Normally I'd say don't chop the cowl and have a head sticking out the side but if it's a miss America version who really cares?
I assume you are not a particularly picky scale person so you are looking at it as a sport plane, just use your 61.
Maybe down the track you will make something more scale.
But as long as you have fun in your hobby, that's the main aim!

My suggestion: Keep it as light as you can. You the smallest engine you can that will balance the model without having to add additional weight .  LIght flies better, and the plane will last longer.

good luck.

OK, so it's not in a scale military livery, it's still attractive. Enjoy it.

Years ago i had the Dago Red and flew it with a OS60 and it was a blast.. If I was going to buy a motor for that plane, it would be a saito 100 or 91, what ever fit better.. Fly it with the 61 you have and have fun.....

funny thing...went to your profile, and looked at what your flying(since your so harsh on others for their planes)...low and behold you show that you too have the same plane...so whats that make you?

Lol.....well after looking at your models I can see your not that picky about scale

I didnt think this thread generate this many replies.

I put it in the warbirds forum because its a P51. Although this particular plane has been slightly modified for racing, it still was originally a WWII fighter escort, right?

And the model isnt any different than the warbird, except for the color scheme.

The Miss America paint job isnt what I would have chosen if i were to order one, but it was a nice looking model and a good deal, so I bought it. I could always change the color if I feel really randy some day.  But after looking at it a bit and looking at the real plane, its actually a nice looking plane for a racer. its got smooth lines.

And If its not extremely scale, but flies well, I will be happy with it. I like that its got nice retracts on it because I hate when models are supposed to have a clean belly in fligh, but dont have retracts.

Thanks for all the help guys. If the 61 balances well, Ill use that and put the 55ax in my Extra....

Jeremy

Mach2,
Guys that are racing this plane use a YS 1.10 or YS 1.15, 30% nitro and 13 x 13N APC prop.
Set up my own WM P-51 that way and it was a BLAST to fly!

Shame on me.  I have this exact plane with an OS .91 four stroke.  Flies like a dream, lands flat and the retracts make it's flight look even nicer w/o the old PTS P-51's fixed gear showing.  It's sleek, fast and handles like a P-51.  What else could one ask for?  Enjoy it!  It's an RC plane and has that P-51 brand.  The Down Under dude should have seen all the ugly sticks I used to fly if he thinks a Miss America is an insult!

If that BCM muffler clears the cowling without hacking it up, I would fly it with the TT pro.

I had one of these exact models in the Rockwell International yellow paint scheme, and it was an awesome flier with an Evolution .46 mounted inverted. It could do just about anything with that engine, so I can't imagine a bigger one! The club guys loved it when I did a routine with that plane. Yours will be heaps of fun I bet.

yeah ive seen some youtube videos of guys flying that type of set up. They are freakin fast!  They look as fast or faster than my Revolver with the DLE20.

How are they not really nose heavy though?  If they add tail weight they would be really heavy. But I guess if you race then speed is all you care about.  I just want a plane that is fast enough to have good flow over the surfaces to give me good response for sport flying, but not be too heavy that it has to land at 100mph.

The TT61 pro will stick out the right side with the head almost an inch. and I my have to cut the left side because that muffler is so wide. The best way in my opinion to mount the motor is sideways. It will look better than having a huge muffler sticking out the side of the cowl, since thats what would happen because Id have to put the stock muffler back on. The manual actually shows the engine upright and the head sticking out the top and the muffler out the right side. It looks horrible haha!

The guy I bought it from said that it is a good flying plane because he had a couple previously. He said that it flew really well with the .46, but if it doesnt pull my light Extra very well, I cant see it doing any better in the Mustang.

I think im gonna put the 55ax in the Extra and the 61 in the Mustang. If I had the money, Id put a DLE20 in it! I love that engine! And only 2oz heavier than the TT 61 pro.  Inverted with a pitts muffler it would only hang out the bottom and look awesome....oh well. I can always change it later.

You posted this while I was writing mine. What prop and muffler were you using?  Hell, maybe Ill try the .46 and see how she flies. If its not enough I can swap it out for the 61.

I like to keep my planes a little lighter so they're able to glide instead of falling from the sky like a rock if the motor shuts off.  Also you'll get a more scale flight with the smaller motor. But if your gonna 3D it, put a blat-fart 1.20 on it.

Have had the World Models versions of the Dago Red, Voodoo, and currently have the yellow Rockwell version. Have flown them with a TT Pro .46, Pro .61, Saito 100 and my Rockwell now has a TT Pro .91 in it. The plane flies very well with all of these set-ups so whatever you go with, it will be fine. If I were to choose which set-up gave the best overall performance for me personally for basic flying I would say the .61 was the best way to go. It gives plenty of power but keeps the weight down. Going with a bigger engine will mean having to add weight to balance and if memory serves me, with both the .46 and the .61 it meant just having to move the battery. With the 100 and the .91 I had to add weight to the tail and on my Rockwell, I moved the elevator servos back to just in front of the horizontals as well.

Mach2, if you are interested and can make it, there is a warbird race happening this weekend, (April 21), in Hesperia/Victorville. There will be plenty of P-51's there with all kinds of different set-ups and would be a good way to see what others have done and how they fly.

I have an OS 55AX and it has as much power as a typical 60 with the weight only slightly more thanor equal to a 46. Just my opinion, but you will get the best power-to-weight out of the 55AX and easier to install neatly in a cowl. You could buy an inverted pitts muffler and it won't stick out as bad as the stock muffler if installed inverted.
