I was running a Magnum XL52 RFS 4-Stroke on my test stand and could not get the idle as low as I thought it should be.

The page at Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4-Stroke R/C Engine says 2000, but I could not get below 3400 reliably.

Any input is appreciated.

Hi!
Are you sure the fuel contains 5-15% nitro? OS F plug? The tank center in line with the carb ? 11,5x6 or 12x5 APC prop?

Have you adjusted the low speed needle?

Jan,

The fuel was Morgan Cool Power 15% Heli as my 15% Omega is old and the store was out of Omega. Could be a factor.

It is an OS F plug, but it has been sitting for two years.

The prop is an APC 13x5.

The tank could be an issue as I was using a JETT 8 ounce bubbleless since I have a bubbleless in the plane.

Time was running short and I did not adjust the needle. This engine had been running fine a couple of years ago. I had opened it and oiled it.

I don't have a lot of experience with four strokes. I almost exclusively do glow two strokes. I'm moving into gas and I'm going to do more four strokes. I just don't know what to expect from glow four strokes and this engine. But I see gas engines just over 2000 and I see the spec for this engine at 2000.

I had to put another engine on the test stand for a video I was making. Everything checked out on it.

I will change the plug, put this engine back on the test stand and make adjustments. Possibly switch the tank. I have to go to a different hobby shop today and show some Sky Raider Mach II and LA Racer 40 kits to the owner. I will get some more fuel.

I have two more of these that I had bought on sale and one of them is broken in. So I will compare if I need to.

Do you think the 13x5 is too heavy?

Once broke in mine idles at 2500 reliably but still not so hot at 2000. Over 3000 is a concern and it sounds like a simple adjustment could be all you need. You said it had sat for a while so maybe just some running to clear out the cobwebs?  How does it respond to the pinch test at idle?

First, if the engine has set for a long while, you may have dried out o-rings on the needles.  I would order a set from Hobby People.

The adjustment procedure is to set the high end needle for max RPM less 3 or 4 hundred.  Then set the throttle to the lowest speed you can and keep the engine running.  While at this throttle setting very slowly lean the idle mix for maximum RPM.  Don't touch the throttle while doing this.  Now go back and re-adjust the high speed.  Back to the low speed for a second time.  You should notice a lower idle now. Keep doing this until you don't see any change at either the high or low settings. Now let the engine idle for a while, 20 to 30 seconds at least then jam the throttle to full as fast as you can.  If the engine dies as soon as you jam it, open the idle a 16th turn and try again.  If it is slow to gain RPM when jam the throttle and bulbrurbs a bit, close the idle a a 16th  turn.  You will get instant response when the balance is right.  Also check that you can quickly cut to full idle without killing the engine.

Some of the Mag 52's had the O-ring grove in the idle mix cut to deep and you couldn't get a good seal, even with a new O-ring.  If you see a quick change in idle rpm as soon a you touch the screw with your screwdriver and another when you pull the screw driver off, I would check the idle mix valve and O ring for a loose fit.  It should be snug to screw in.  A smear of vasoline on the end of the idle mix will tell you if you are leaking air there.

Don,

Found some cool pictures of a comparison of the Magnum/ASP and the OS engine valve seats under a microscope. It is aparently from Greece.

Clearly you can see the quality differnece.

Thanks to all, Thanks to Campgens for the detailed technique.

Thanks to SJN for the great links to that thread. Very informative. Also noted that someone talks about not getting an idle below 3500-4000 in one message.

When I was working on another video tonight I realized I had the camera running while I was running the Magnum. So I made a quick video and posted it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF1x-oal6co. You can see that I did not make any adjustments in this run. I had done that in an earlier run. But still probably needed to. As I said, I'm a 2 stroke person. I have only flown a few four strokes and know very little about them. I actually had the most success with a YS 63 FZ which is a horse of an engine.

But you may be able to tell me from this video what I need to do and things I have done wrong.

I've got a SAITO 82, a SAITO 180, and a Magnum XL91 RFS I have to get running well. So I've got to get up to speed. Is shooting the quick videos a good way to get feedback?
