I've read a lot of good fuel tips on this forum, but I haven't seen anything discussed regarding the proper disposal of old fuel. I know most of the guys (and gals) who post on this site probably don't have a problem using up all of their fuel, but I have been an "on again/off again" flier and I have some fairly old, partially used fuel jugs. I am suspect of the usability of this fuel and I would like to dispose of it.
Being a conscientious person and one who is pro-environment, I don't want to just pour this down the drain.
I suppose I could contact Morgan Fuels or Byron to see what they recommend, but I thought I would check here first to see if anyone knows how to handle this.

Any recommendations?

Status: offline 		Once or twice a year, one of the government agencies sponsors a hazmat day. The collect car batteries/paint/chemicals. Usually see the ad in the paper. Check with your state EPA office.

Status: offline 		I always save it to run in an engine that needs to be broken in. Even fuel that might have slightly high water content works well if you mix it 50/50 with some fresh fuel. I wouldn't fly with it, just use to seat an engine's ring.

I am a haz. waste manager at a small college. I would do what flatfour said and contact your local EPA. They may not be the EPA in your state but it shouldn't be too hard to find them. Here in Washington we have the Department of Ecology but I think only one other state calls them that. Another option is to call a large university nearby. Talk to the Environmental Health and Safety Department. They should be quite knowledgeable about the programs in your area. They may even be willing to combine it with their flammables especially if it is a small amount. Its worth a try!

Status: offline 		Do a search on this forum about water in fuel. I have never had a problem using old half empty jugs of fuel providing they were well capped. Water will not penatrate the plastic used for our fuel jugs. On a prior post an Ausstrailian mixed water in his fuel and found that it ran fine until the oil seperated out because of the water. So if the oil or parts of it doesn't settle to the bottom I would use it, in the air even.
