Hey guys just seen a post on the rctank Facebook page announcing the asiatam tiger(p) full metal model and a sturmtiger top kit in metal with working crane! Looks very very nice I gotta say. No more info sorry but I'll update if I hear anything!

Hmmm, interesting to say the least. I will be building an Elefant soon and to do the early Tiger was tempting. Of course, these are not 'finished' models but the top of this Sturm is lacking some detail. This is why I do not like metal as the models base material. Adding anything will not be as easy nor permanent like resin or plastic.

Need to see more but hopefully they do not endure the wrath like they did their Elefant kit?

Thanks for the link! Now I must have one (Tiger P) and it would be the only tank in metal I would have to have.

Do you think that is for a complete model for the Tiger (P)? That's only $329.00 bucks?

Of course, minus any electronic goodies.

Yeah ... it was too good to be true for the Tiger. Still, time to roll out some room on one of the plastic cards. I always fancied having a static model in metal like in the movie "Battle of the Bulge" where they showed off the new Tiger (really an M47) and not paint it.

This might work. I just hope it's not like their Elefant ...

I'm wondering has anyone had one of the most recent asiatam elefants with the newly upgraded transmissions? Im wondering if they've improved this area then maybe the build quality is better

Well on the first lot of models the transmissions use the HL style frames, I'm not sure if they where 3:1. The new transmissions use much thicker alu or steel frames (very similar to the mr design tus) they also feature external gear downs very similar to the Tamiya Pershing. This is all new according to sales guy

Just a quick look this Porsche Tiger has the latter reinforced gun mantle not fitted to this Tiger this is a latter variant of the Henschel type, the turret is also from a latter type Porsche Tiger but with an escape hatch which was never fitted to the Porsche type it should have another pistol port there the pilze in the turret roof didn’t exist on this variant and the cupola hatch opens the wrong way in fact they have just stuck a standard Tiger turret on a Porsche Wanne lacking tools and cables 545€ with no electrics, what a bargain,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,rather not

Bare in mind theyre still wip I believe so they're not fully detailed yet. I hardly think the turret details are deal breakers, they can always be rectified but there again I'm not a rivet counter and would rather have a tank with some inaccuracies than not at all!. Also as asiatam already produce a tiger turret this is not surprising.

But then just imagine if Tamiya did exactly the same as Asiatam, this thread would be 8 pages of pure crying about the detail from people claiming not to be rivet counters, rather reminds me of the Elefant they released what people received was very different to what was advertised.
Personally I would rather have a tank that arrived in one piece than broken to pieces.

Yup, agree the turret is wrong for either variant.  If you wanted to do a prototype you'd need to build up on the elevated turret roof.  As for the escape hatch, thats been bugging me for awhile researching tank 003.  Can't find a pic that confirms the right hand side had a hatch or pistol port.  Have a buddy that talked to T Jentz and even he was unsure, even though in his book he has it having the pistol port.  I was thinking it may
have gotten refitted with a hatch at St. Valentin when it was overhauled?

I thought the issue with the metal Ferdinand was that there where quality issues? Ahem m-51 ahem, although I would say that rather worse than the historical flaws in the tiger(p). I stand by my point though,I think is would rather alter the turret than do a large scratch of the hull and probably use the later turret any way. I'll take slightly inaccurate tanks over no tank.

Ahem, serious quality issues that would never happen at Tamiya, Ahem, M51 I thought you said that you were not a rivet counter and the detail issued wouldn’t bother you so long as you had a tank.
If Tamiya sold the M51 with all its detail faults for that price minus the electrics forums would slate the model and the company a lot more than they did.

Tiger 003 was the only known Porsche Tiger to see combat and all Porsche Tigers had the twin pistol ports the same as initial production Henschel Tigers, the likelihood that they changed the turret is highly unlikely given that this didn’t happen with Henschel Tigers

I agree that all of the Vk 45.01 (P) tank turrets need the earlier mantlet, and did not have pilzen mounts. And for the first 12 of them, they had a raised roof section to clear the breech when the gun was fully depressed. From what I understand, turrets #13 and #14 had the raised, flat roof that eventually made it into production on the Henshel chassis. One of these two turrets was used on tank #003 that was kept for trials until it was finally issued to the 653rd in April of 1944. I understand that - while at the testing ground - it had been upgraded with zimmeritt, pilzen mounts on the roof, and the turret escape hatch. I have never seen a picture that clearly shows the hatch. The only "close" photograph of this area, shows a crewmember standing on the rear deck, and the "angled thing" in front of his feet is purported to be the open escape hatch, with the locking device inside the escape hatch being what you see. I believe that opinion, and will follow that when I build my model of it.

A couple of thoughts other about the turret on #003. I read accounts that say that the cupola hatch laid flat when open, but I have ALWAYS seen pictures of this vehicle with the hatch open at the normal 110 (?) degree angle - although I cannot see the hold-open device in any of the pictures. The cupola has five vision slots, and one should face forward as on other Tigers, (not rotated like the model shown). I also understand that vision ports on the turret sides of all of these turrets were a little lower (at 41cm) than what finally made it into production on the Tiger I (at 48cm). That was from David Byrden's Tiger I site, which is a wonderful reference for obscure stuff like this:

You seem to have forgotten the early panthers with the sprockets that didn't fit the tracks properly........... I'm not a Sherman person so I'm only going off what others said. Also having several good friends in product design who have to get products made in Chinese factories there's often a large difference between what the client specifies and what is delivered.

I see so there is an excuse for a Chinese company but not for one in Japan, yes there was a problem with some early Tamiya Panthers this was with the width of the sprockets and could be quite easily rectified granted it was still a problem but still is nowhere near as bad as the problems people have had with the Aisiatam Elefant, people who bought them will no doubt wait until they have seen what others receive as they won’t want to get burnt twice, others who have seen the Elefant offering will probably also wait and see what is offered.
Tamiya did release a white elephant with the M51 and yes there was a lot of detail mistakes but still not as bad as the Aisiatam offering there are a great number of people who may like what they see but would think twice before they bought from them, Tamiya may have dropped a bollock with the M51 detail but can’t be faulted on their durability and reliability this is why they still set the bench mark in 1/16.
