So here is the top prospects for my next car (see here for criteria). Please feel free to chime in and tell me where I'm spot on, and/or anything I might be mistaken about. Drumroll....

Traxxas Nitro 4-Tec
Pros:
- Speed.
- Parts availability.
- 2-speed
- 4wd
- Lots of accesseries: chargers, ez-start battery, air filter oil, extra glow-plugs, etc.

Cons:
- Drivetrain. I know little about belt-driven, but can obviously learn.
- EZ start. See above. Perhaps I'll love it, but know little about it.
- My 11-year old will make fun of me for getting a Traxxas. Even he is annoyed with their popularity...but I imagine once I blow past him at 65mph the first thing he'll say "Can I try it?" ;-)

I know Traxxas can be a controversial topic, but as I explained to my son, we've already proven we can enjoy this hobby without a Traxxas...so why be stubborn and not get the car that meets my criteria I want simply to 'make a point'?

Others in consideration:
Kyosho Inferno GT2 Spec
HPI RS4 Evo+
OFNA DM-1 Spec (RTR)

After my on-road car, I want to look at either a Truggy for bashing, or an HPI Pulse 4.6. Then....I'm going to look at building some kits (the one I really want is Associated RC8.2) but that is at least a year away. Although a year in "my hobby world" is more like six months...hopefully I can hold out  ;-)

ive had 3 nitro tc3's over the years and they are in my opinion the best onroads for a beginner, and with upgrades are great for the advanced i have also had an hpi rs4 3evo onroad also a great car but given a choice go with tc3. Belt drive drivelines break far more often than shaft drive, ive never owned a belt drive but friends have and in the time it took him to go through 3 belts i didnt ever change a shaft i never changed a shaft in the time i had mine

Thanks, guys, I duly appreciate the responses.

Regarding the TC3....Not sure what defines someone as a "beginner" or a car as a "beginner car" - can someone please elaborate? While I am still new to "the hobby", I feel confident in my ability to maintain/upgrade my cars as required, and have taken on quite a few "novice" projects with the ones I have (see my YouTube channel in sig below). Of course, I'm itching to take on more complex things so the last thing I want is a "beginner car". ;-)

If by beginner we are talking about driving skills - then that is certainly me. I guess I've focused so much on bashing/maintaining, I've yet to spend quality time on the technical aspects of driving - but I will - know that. This is a major reason I want an on-road car...and figure might as well ensure I have one of the best while I learn to drive it;-)

I'd LOVE to hear from someone that has more than one of these cars for a direct comparison. Thanks again!

p.s. If anyone has negative feedback on any of these cars they do not wish to publically post, please just send me a PM. I'm sincerely wanting to hear about experiences good and bad.

4-tec? Oh, dear god, no.

Get an Inferno GT2. It's about as much fun as you can have on asphalt without chafing. Kyosho quality and insane power and handling.

beginner refers to someone who has little to no knowledge of the hobby, how to work on/maintain an RC car, how to tune a car, and in most cases can't drive very well yet.
beginner is a polite way to saying noob.

saying a car is beginner based means that it's an easy car to get acquainted with.  usually simple in design and function, is easy to work on, and has forgiving handling.  the benefit of the TC3 is that while it has all those characteristics it's engineered well enough, built well enough and performs well enough that it even suites the needs of intermediate and expert hobbyists.  it's an easy car to learn with and not a car you're going to quickly outgrow.

The GT2 has one of the worst engines ever made, and the diff rings suck...

It's a nice car, but it's not real great out of the box.

If you want an onroad basher you have got to go 1/8 scale

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_1156/products_id/29701/n/OFNA-DM-1-Spec-RTR-M-Type-1-8th-Nitro-On-Road-Sedan-wForce-28-Motor

How about a kit where you get the engine, pipe and electronics seperately?

I wont take a 4-tec from you if you GAVE it to me, please chop them into little bits and recycle them.

OFNA for sure, if i had money, that would be what i would buy in a heartbeat.

P.s traxxas speed ratings are highly exaggerated and i mean highly as if the people who rate them are like kites themselves.
