I while back I made a prototype one of these for a client and recently wanted to fit a clunk to a new tank/jet I have just finished and decided to re-make the PPC.

PPC specifications are:

Diameter: 16mm (designed to fit into the hole in the aluminium ring used with standard Dubro filler hardware)
Length: 46mm
Weight: 25g
Barb ID: 3mm (1/8)
Connection tube OD: 6mm (1/4)
Price: £18.95

I would suggest this filter is suitable for turbines up to around 140N, its very free flowing and therefor reduces the drag on the draw side of the pump which in turn provides better stability and fuel flow.

Comments, suggestions and feedback always very welcome and should be on line in the shop within the next week.

Nice idea Marc, how does it perform when the pleated paper starts to be exposed to air as the tank level gets lower?

Rob.

Rob,

I have not tested this clunk to levels of fuel depletion to see when air is drawn through, however in the CAT products which use the same system you can draw down the fuel level to around a third of the surface area of the pleated paper before you start to get air drawn through.

There are a few guys out there who I know use a home made version of this concept with good results too.

Can you change the filter if it becomes clogged or dry rotted over time ? Were can I get one
BTW,. If you made it out of steal micron(filter)like full scale turbine filters,. then we could clean them with out having to change them.I would buy one .....no I would need six.

The filters are commonly used in automotive and light aircraft fuel systems, the paper has a very long life span and a simple back flush will remove any clogging should there be any. In addition to this the paper filter is very good at preventing air from being drawn up the fuel line, I'm not sure a steel mesh filter would provide the same security.

They will be on my web site http://www.gbrjet.com in the next day or so.

Appreciate the comments.

I'll check your web site.Take a look at this link.I could not find a turbine filter from IPL but the scott's racing filter is the same material (FYI)May cost more to make and purchase, but if you make it I'll buy it.The paper filter I'm sure will work just fine.Micro mesh will be over the top

Well done Marc in finally making them available.

I can answer some points as I have always used pleated paper filters on all my jets and never used a UAT.
The filter will draw fuel until there is only a dribble left in the tank. So long as it is sitting in fuel it will wick up into the paper and draw liquid. We have often flown planes till the engine runs dry (particularly with the glider) and there is only a very small amount of fuel left.

I have reused filters I have made some years previously and I have never had one clog up. You still have to filter the fuel from the fuelling station so it enters the tank as clean as you can in the same way as with any other system. Also you should not have algae growth in the fuel.

I have never had one rot and would not have reused them if I was at all worried.

The oldest one that I can think of that is in use is 6 years old.

If you are sceptical buy one and try it running the tank dry on the ground.

John

Jgwright Hi, You bring up some fine points. Most interesting to me is that you deleted your UAT.That would same money, weight and make the install simple. In your operation experience you never suck up air and had a in flight flame out ? Flame out with a glider in not much of a problem if any.Big haevy jet is another matter.Has any body else tried this with out issues? Thanks gents.

I have pleated paper filters in a Fei Bao Su27 with twin P60 engines, a Horten Ho229 with twin MW44 engines and neither would be a great jet to fly on one engine! I have also had them in a Fibre Classics F-86 with a Merlin 90, a Dh108 Swallow with Merlin 90, a smaller Dh 108 Swallow with a JC Bee, 3 AMD Hawks with MW44s and Super Sport, FEJ Rafale powered by a Jetcat P60 and latterly with a Kingtech 80, a Skyhawk powered by a MW44, 3 Savex L39's powered with MW44, a 3m span glider powered by Sprite turbine, a 2.6 m wingspan glider powered by Sprite a Cutlass powered by Sprite, 2 deltas powered by MW44, a Kangaroo powered by Super Sport, FW Huckebein powered by MW44, Junkers EF128 powered by MW44. A4 Skyhawk MW44 powered, Cougar MW44 powered. (There may be others I have not remembered).

None of these models had UAT's. I just followed some excellent advice in RCU about making the pleated paper filters. Some of these planes crashed due to Tx radio issue, some were retired and some sold and some I still have. I never did understand why everyone insisted on fitting UATs. Flameouts have never been a problem except when there was literally no fuel left.

John

John,You have plenty of operation experience .I will take small steps to build confidence.I have a modelbau 339 that I will fly with a P80.I'll try it with that jet first and see how it goes.I looked at the web site and did not find the filters yet.I can give Todd a call at Dream Works see if he will be carrying them when they become available.

Frank,

Due to the margins in these it really wont be feasible for Todd to sell these, naturally I will chat to him on them anyway. I have the first batch arriving tomorrow and once here will pop onto the site - tomorrow they will be there.
