I am finishing up a GP giant big stick with a DLE 55. It is a fairly large plane with a 80 inch wingspan. Started the engine for the first time today. Motor currently swinging a 20x8 prop. Problem I am running into is the following. I have dropped the idle as far as I can without the engine dying, and the plane still wants to pull forward quite a bit. Now, this would not be much of a problem if I flew off of grass, but where I fly is a solid, paved runway. I can foresee this being a big problem if I can't even taxi the plane out to the runway without having to hold onto the tail the whole time so it doesn't start running on me. And then trying to stop it after landing could be a big treat as well. I went with the 20 x 8 prop due to the lack of prop clearance I have with the stock gear. I also have put on the biggest wheels I could find locally which are Dubro 4 1/2 inchers. I also tried a 22 x 10 prop to see if it would swing the prop a little slower. It was a little better but still wanted to roll and build speed. If I ended up going with the 22 x 10 prop I would have to put new taller gear on it for adequate prop clearance. I know that the engine is a little bigger than what is recommended but I always put bigger engines on my planes due to the altitude I fly at. I wonder if there is any kind of mod I could do to the main wheels. Possibly some kind of friction mod. so it wont roll easily on me at idle. I am at a loss. Do not know what to do from here besides having to change out motors which I prefer not to do seeing as I do not have another smaller motor I could use. Any suggestions or ideas what be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Jon.

have you thought about a 3 blade?

Common issue on those Big Sticks since they are so light.

Three blade prop would give you more ground clearance but the real issue is that the engine won't idle very low when new. I would not continue to run 20" two blade props on that engine, not enough load, they'll play much better with at least a 22" and lots of guys run 23", or the three blade with a similar load which would be maybe a 20 or 21" if available? a 10 pitch prop will also exacerbate the problem, try to stick with 8 pitch.

After the engine breaks in and loosens up a bit, you should be able to get the idle down to the 1250-1350 RPM range and that should stop the "tractoring" on the ground. Once setup like this, lots of guys and I'm one of them, setup a "Flight Idle" which allows you to kick up the engine idle speed with a switch on the radio while flying and back down to land. Gives you some headroom on not having the engine quit in the air with the low idle speed and consistent RPM settings. I do not like to play with the throttle trim on gassers as they are so sensitive coming off idle it's very difficult to get consistent results.

take some fuel tubing and slide it on your axels to create some friction on your wheels just enough to keep it from rolling at idle I read that tib bit here on rcu michael

I would not recommend trying friction on your wheels as I tried this and found my GP .60 with dle 30 wanting to tip forward causing prop strike and also plane would always pull to one side on taxing. I found it difficult to get correct and proportional amounts of friction for each wheel and eventually due to wearing of the tubing the friction would get less after some use.

Excellent advice from Zeeb, thats not nearly enough prop for that engine.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKJY0&P=0 This one ?

REQUIRES: Engine: 1.20-1.60 cu in (20-26cc) 2-stroke
OR 1.20-1.80 cu in (20-29cc) 4-stroke
OR 1.5-2.1 cu in (25-35cc) gasoline

HMMM seem's you would expect to have this problem being your out of its specs

Thanks for everyone's suggestions so far. In regaurds to the previous post. I am well aware of Great Planes suggested engine specs for this plane. Every plane I have ever owned over the past 25 years in this hobby I have opted to install a larger engine due to the altitude I fly at. I háve found that the manufacturers recommended engine size just does not cut it at my altitude. Manufactures engine recommendations give me marginal performance at best many times. Like previous posters have said; big sticks are light and that is where I am running into my problem. Today I put a 22x10 prop on the plane and built some new landing gear that are 2 inches taller. Hopefully after break in I can get a slower idle and the problem will fix itself. Thanks again for everyones input so far.

Holy smokes! Dle 55! I have a ys 170 in mine and even at my 4600ft elevation swinging an 18/10 prop I can hover at half throttle. That's alot of motor for that plane.

I have a dle30 on mine and it gives it unlimited vertical. It needed 36oz of nose weight. So I fabricated a 14 oz aluminum extension and stuck my engine out another 3". You right I could not get a 18x8 or 18x10 to spool down enough for a slow landing unless I used full flaps and then in wind it was a bouncy situation. I settled on a Master Aircrew 20x6. This prop was heavy enough that the engine would spool down and actually help slow the plane. And the dle seemed to like it. Trust me you dont need a DLE55 on this plane an make it a tail dragger also.

I agree with Padlock. I own the same plane... and have a DLE 30 in her. More than enough power. In fact I very seldom run it wide open and can climb almost out of sight stright up. I think the DLE 55 is way to much power.... just my 2 cents worth for what it's worth.

I've seen a signature of someone here on RCU a number of times: "Too much power is just about right"......

If you cannot excerise some self discipline with the left stick (assuming mode 2), you can always limit the travel of the throttle servo.....

The DLE-55 makes a FANTASTIC engine for that model especially for those of us some distance above Sea Level. While you're entitled to your opinions, this one's up in the night....

Thanks to Zeeb and most of the rest of you that have responded to my post. And that ZacharyR-He sure is a nice, helpful guy, isn't he? I will be maidening this plane in the next day or two, and I am sure the plane will do just fine with this motor. I will keep you all posted on how it goes.

FWIW

I put fuel tubing on both sides of the wheel and compress it
with a wheel collar. It helps.

It really is a fun plane to fly you will enjoy it. It should fly great even with the weight. At one time I had put my saito 325 radial on mine( it handled the weight but gutless as can be).( You shouldn't have that problem though!). Good luck on the maiden!

Well. Took the stick out to the field this morning for it's maiden. Put 4 flights on her and I must say she is a great flying plane. It has great power and vertical with the dle 55. I'm looking forward to many more flights. Thanks again for everybody's input. Jon

This might be one of those few times that a tricycle gear would be a good choice. Many years ago, the local fliers flew off a school parking lot without any extra landing area. Most of us flew trike gear planes and the brakes were an almost must item. IIRC, we used a simple brake actuated by full down elevator. I would think such a brake would work fine on a tail dragging stick if the mains were far enough forward and the throttle wasn't goosed with the brakes set.
